Exclusive: 'Grey's Anatomy' promotes Sarah Drew

sarah-drewImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABCIt’s official: Sarah Drew has been welcomed into Grey’s Anatomy‘s elite Series-Regular Society.

An ABC rep confirms that Drew’s deal — which kicks in this fall with the start of season 7 — was finalized this morning.

News of the former Everwood actress’ promotion comes 48 hours after fellow Grey’s rookie Jesse Williams joined the full-time ranks at Seattle Grace.

It’s safe to say that fans will be slower to embrace Drew’s new status, given the mostly chilly reception her character — Mercy West alum/McDreamy-obsessive April — has received. But don’t underestimate the redemptive powers of both fast-rising star Drew and series creator Shonda Rhimes. And if you’re looking for Exhibit A, grab some Kleenex and rewatch April’s emotional heart-to-heart with Mer in the season finale.

Admit it: You’re starting to like her. You’re starting to really, really like her. Or not. Either way, share your thoughts in the comments!

    Oh no…

    • Clishfear

that about sums it up. . .

      • koker

        agreed

      • nikkido

        NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
        so annoying.

      • Michael

No. I’m not starting to like her. She is annoying and will never be a replacement in my heart for George or Izzie.

    • Chris

My thoughts exactly. When she got McDreamy shot, I was practically yelling at the screen for the shooter to take her out. The moment she officially comes between Mer and Der will be the moment I officially stop watching Grey’s

      • Beth

Man no one likes her….love Avery so they are batting .500 on that…

      • Kati

        I’m with you

      • Maggie

I agree. I was hoping she’d get shot too. Can’t stand how useless her character is. Get a backbone already!

      • renee

        can’t stand the witch.

    • jen

I do not understand this sentiment. I mean, I dont’ really *like* her character, but we’re not meant to. I like having her around to be all self-absorbed and mcdreamy-crushing and a bit of a villain – it finally makes it interesting again and brings some better conflict. do we have to “like” every character?

      • wino

agree jen. her character is supposed to be annoying. and as a viewer, i like having someone like that around to spice up the plotlines.

      • m

if they were going to keep a character around that we weren’t supposed to like, i would have rather they kept reed around.

      • melanie

i agree with m. For me she’s always the nose-job girl. Reed was a much stronger character to not like.

      • LDN

I’m sorry. I hated Reed. She was a total bitch all the time. So much so, she really became a one note character. I certainly don’t *love* April, but she has more redeeming qualities to her. She kind of reminds me of “Little Grey.” When Lexie was first introduced, I couldn’t stand her. And just like April, Lexie started out as a possible love interest/red herring for Derek. Now she’s more well rounded and endearing. Give it time…at least I don’t have to hear one more bitch remark from Reed.

    • lorna

Why tthe heck must Shondra promote every reccurring character? They should have stopped with McKidd, except for Jesee Williams. Ughh this makes me NOT want to watch s7.

  • Megan

    This cast is bloating.

  • David

I like her a lot! I can see why she might irritate some people but I’m glad that she and Jesse Williams both became regulars. They kept the right Mercy West-ers.

  • AiLing

Am I the only person that doesn’t mind her? :p

    • hannah86

nope, I don’t mind her too. She’s a good actress. They should really get rid of Teddy. I can see April still existing and not having to sleep with anyone on the show. Teddy on the other hand, without the Owen/Cristina triangle she’s no longer interesting. I didn’t find her interesting in the first place anyway, but after the finale… what the heck is she still doing around?

      • melanie

Kim Raver is amazing, and I am looking forward to Teddy getting an s/l outside of C/O. I love her as Cristina’s mentor.

    • Brooke

She’s a good actress (I loved her on Everwood) so I’m open to seeing if they write her a little better from here on out.

      • lorna

I ONLY liked her on Everwood. She’s a good actress, but I HATE her on here and hated her on SPN.

    • Kris

Not at all. I actually really like her. When I first heard about Jesse getting promoted I thought “what about Sarah?”. I’ve seen her in other things and she’s a great actress. I can understand why fans dont like her because MerDer fans dont want anything coming between them but lets not forget one thing. MerDer fans HATED Lexie when she first came on the show. They called her McBar Slut and now she’s a fan favourite. Don’t underestimate the power of a good redemption storyline.

      • Ana

Um…I still hate Lexie. And it’s all on the character, not on on whose pants she wants to jump on.

  • kazz

i honestly don’t care enough about to her to like or dislike her, but her story in the finale was very sad. she’s a bit annoying. as long as she doesn’t mess with meredith and derek’s happiness, i don’t care. i doubt they’ll continue that storyline now though, not after she’s seen and bonded with meredith over derek’s shooting.

  • ginalee

No I don’t like her. I’ll admit I was rooting for her to get shot.

    • Ana

You and me both. I can’t believe not a single bullet found her!

    • Another Emma

I know we are talking about a character in a TV show, but this sort of deep hatred for a young woman, who may be annoying, but after all is learning how to become a surgeon in order to save lives, worries me a little bit.

  • CR

Um no, not starting to like her AT ALL. Do not want.

  • Michelle

Her name is April? In my house, she is referred to as AG for Annoying Girl!

  • mayiya

I liked it! April is sweet and nice.

  • Michelle

I don’t like April, I think she is annoying, and so what if she had a heart to heart with Merideth, It Was A Dramatic time for both of them

  • Vanessa

I am so happy that Sarah Drew is a regular on Grey’s. I’ve loved her since her star-making turn as Hannah on Everwood. I still miss that show. I am glad to have her back on TV again no matter how annoying her character April may be.

    • aby

Agreed. I love Sarah Drew. April on the other hand does need a good redemptive storyline. Given some good material I fully expect fans to embrace her the way they have Lexie.

  • Chris

    ummm, why?

  • Shannon

I hope they can make her less stalkery and fan-girl of Derek and give her an actual storyline. I did warm up to her a little more in the finale though.

  • J.G.

Because if there’s one thing Grey’s needs more of, it’s series regulars. Did they learn nothing from the later-season ER clown-car casting disaster?

    • Neil

I agree, the show simply doesn’t have room for these new regulars. Mark is becoming increasingly tiresome, Owen was ruined last season, and Teddy just isn’t interesting. That is five characters out of what, fourteen, that just aren’t working.

Bring the focus back to Meredith, Derek (ugh), Alex, Christina and Bailey. The Chief, Arizona, Callie and Lexie work as suppourting players and Az has clicked wonderfully with the cast.

There have been two many cast members since season four, but at least then they were all great.

Oh, and for the record…Sarah Drew is a good actress but the show is overcrowded as it is. I wouldn’t even mind if she was recurring.

      • lorna

Mark will be awesome forever! Get rid of Arizona, Teddy and April! GRR.

      • jessie

        Don’t get rid of Arizona!!

  • Alia

As much as I LOVE Sarah Drew, I don’t like this character. I don’t see a lot of potential for good storylines for her. I wish they’d kept Reed instead, so she could hook up with Alex and leave Lexie free to be with Mark.

    • Avalon

      Alia,

You took the words right out of my mouth/mind!
