Tonys attract 7 million viewers; ABC reigns with NBA Finals

Game 5 of the NBA Finals on ABC was the big winner on Sunday opposite the Tonys on CBS and reruns on NBC and Fox, according to preliminary results.  The match between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics attracted 14.3 million viewers, up 42 percent from last year’s series-deciding game between the Lakers and Orlando Magic (10.1 million). ABC won the night in viewers (12.87 million)- which represented its most-watched summer Sunday in 10 years — and among adults 18-49.

The Tonys drew 7 million viewers — down 5 percent versus last year’s telecast (7.4 million). It also was down 8 percent in the key adult demographic. CBS finished the night in second place among total viewers, with 7.47 million.

Fox aired repeats of its animated shows and the canceled comedies ‘Til Death and Sons of Tucson. It averaged 3.39 million viewers for the night and ranked No. 2 among adults 18-49. NBC aired Dateline Sunday followed by repeats of Losing it with Jillian and Last Comic Standing. The network averaged 3.59 million viewers for the night.

A hopeful key to successful Tony ratings: Glee+HPH+Hugh Jackman

      • @Briana

Didn’t NPH host last year? His ratings weren’t that much better.

      • Hah!

Did you even bother to read the article before spewing? The ratings were down 5% from last year.

      • @Hah

Yes I read the article, dummy. That’s why I said NPH’s ratings weren’t that much better. 5% is not a lot. Did you bother to read my comment before spewing?

    • meh

He didn’t have NBA finals AND a poor Broadway season to deal with.

the Tony’s are a regional award show that lost all relevance 20 eyars ago. surprised it even pulled in 7 million.

    • LOL

No one cares about the Tony Awards show.

      • Barry

I care about it more than the MTV movie awards & any other teen (read Twilight garbage) awards shows. But then again I live in NYC & love attending Broadway shows.

      • D’s Advocate

        Clearly, several million people do.

  • Yes

It is hard to expect the average viewer to watch a shower recognizing a play they may see in a year or maybe in several years. I actually watched this year, but mainly for Green Day.

    • Yes

Yeah, that would be “watch a show”, the heat makes me want to take a shower though…
