O’Donnell has previously filled in for Keith Olbermann as host of Countdown.

“I’ve had a part-time job at MSNBC for 14 years,” said O’Donnell in a statement.  “Now that the network and I have gotten to know each other, I’m thrilled to be going full time.”

O’Donnell won an Emmy for writing and producing The West Wing for NBC. He also created the short-lived NBC series Mister Sterling and currently recurs as attorney Lee Hatcher on the HBO series Big Love. Before coming to Hollywood, O’Donnell served as a legislative aide to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He started contributing to Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough last year and has been a guest host for Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Ed Show, and The Rachel Maddow Show.

  • LOL

    GOP fears MSNBC.

I’m sure MSNBC’s 350K viewers as opposed to CNN & Fox’s millions upon millions will be be thrilled. Until hosts like Olbermeyer and Maddow stop being as smug as, say, Hannity, not many will take them seriously.

      • wakeforcer

Fox isn’t an apt comparison, MSNBC and CNN are news channels. Of course an entertainment channel like Fox “News” gets higher ratings than news channels.

Finally, someone who will make Big Ed Schultz look even tempered. I suggest each episode should end with O’Donnell literally biting someone’s head off (And Lawrence, I say that with the greatest affection.)

    • anne

Well, if it’s going to be literal, can Ann Coulter be his first guest?

If it’s the same drivel as the Three Stooges nightly lineup (Matthew, Olbermann and Maddow) then what’s the point? Does he have anything new or interesting to say? Somehow I doubt it.

    • LOL

      Darogr fears Maddow.

  • Chris

This is long overdue! Lawrence is one of the smartest commentators out there! I as so looking forward to his show! Watch out FOX, MSNBC is a powerhouse to be reckon with. Maddow, Olberman, Shultz, Matthews and now O’Donnell too; what a lineup! Now if they would just get rid of Ratigan life would be perfect!

    • bbkenn

Exactly. I dislike that Ratigan guy.

    • Kevco

Dylan is poorly rehearsed and technically tedious.

  • steve

Great guy, really smart, really knows what he is talking about, and is very passionate too. I’d watch his show. I remember doing a double take when he showed up on Big Love! :)

  • steve

Hey Aholes just here to make fun of msnbc… suck it. You wouldn’t know a REAL news story, or a real news journalist if it bit you in the ass ;)

  • Tommy

Arogant to the point on not even letting Joe finish his statement’s on Joe’s own show!!! My wife refuses to watch Morning Joe during the times that this loon is on.

I actively avoid MSNBC shows when he is guest hosting as it is. Guess I will now be down to only watching this cable network when MORNING JOE is on.

Otherwise, Larry’s addition further makes it useless viewing.

    • Zoe

Oh yeah, and Joe is SO famous for letting people finish their thoughts. (snark) He interrupts and rambles on more than anyone! Tommy–why are you even watching MSNBC when Fox and Friends is obviously a better fit?

    • LOL

      Joe is a GOP tool.

  • Zoe

Awesome! I love Lawrence. As written above, he’s smart and does his research, and isn’t afraid to call out pols who are just spewing talking points. And he’s passionate like Ed Schultz to boot. MSNBC has developed a steller lineup over the last couple years with Rachel, Ed, and now Lawrence. Only drawback: Keith is slowly losing his fill-ins: first Rach, now Lawrence (not to mention the long sad disappearance of David Shuster).

  • Gerald Sutliff

Hey, I’m a fan of Lawrence O’Donnell; he don’t take noth’n from anyone, plus he’s had an insider’s seat for a long time.

  • D Montgomery

Great news that Lawrence O’Donnell is getting a show. I have been hoping he would get a permanent spot. I love his commentaries. He is smart and to the point.

  • Gil

Good move for him and MSNBC. What does Fox have on at 10?

    • LOL

      Clowns. All day.

  • Terry

Kewl, I like him almost as much as olbermann
