'True Blood' premiere ratings are in!

True Blood‘s third season got off to a strong, if not record-breaking, start on Sunday.

The first original episode in nine months attracted 5.1 million viewers, up 38 percent over last summer’s season 2 opener but down slightly from the show’s 5.3 million peak (for an episode that aired last August).

With the 11 pm replay factored in, True Blood ended the night with 6.4 million total viewers.

    that’s awesome

    • kgb

Yeah, except it sucked, and not in a vampire sort of way. It will drop next week. The part at the end about the wolves and the trainers and filming was the best part of the show.

      • Tbfansince1

I agree not as good as the hype! kind of a disappointment. considering the wait! And I have been a fan since day 1. Hope it get’s better. Books are awesome!

      • Rhiannon

You must be high on V because the premiere was friggin awesome!

      • LA

Be patient. They’re just setting up all the new characters and plots. It’s going to be great!

    • ythu

To bad it was the worst episode ever. I love this show, but this episode I just did not get!

      • who cares

not as bad as the majority of the Maryann story line last year.

      • SirLizard

Not as bad as people who can’t spell the word “too”.

      • TONY

I agree, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show but this was a pretty weak season premiere. I KNOW it will get better!!!!

      • tash

Um, did you watch season 2? It was so bad I would rather watch Survivor or the Bachelorette.

This season’s premiere was much better than all of season 2 combined.

      • cos

C’mon, nothing can be so bad as to watch a reality show. They all suck!

      • Lanny

Not sure i get why this episode sucked…its still absoulute true blood. I loved it it was everything i expected.

  • scionte

Good for them! “True Blood” ratings always go up as the season goes on, so I’m expecting some big things for them. :)

  • Kat

That is pretty good. Keep in mind the ratings are not factoring in the poor college students who watch the episodes online. No one I know who watches True Blood actually gets HBO :)

    • Cheery

Same with me, ha! I bet the real numbers are probably closer to double that.

      • Alyssa

Exactly! I found them all online. So good!

Conscience, off. Dick, on. Love it.

      • Dollie

Kudos to you! I hadn\’t tohguht of that!

    • Amanda

Does anybody know where u can find them online, I have been searching forever….

      • hoganbcmj

Ya, I’ve been watching every episode since the first one on surfthechannel.com

    • MarleneEmmett

      Kat:
I get HBO and that’s where I watch
      the show!!!

      • ashley

i get cable and HBO for about 3-6 months out of the year jsut for TRUE BLOOD and then maybe another series or something

    • ythu

College Students aren’t poor, they have thier parents deep pockets. Wait to they have to make a living and get a job. Spoiled brats.

      • Lara

That’s kind of a broad statement to make about college students. I worked my whole time in college.

      • yeah, damn bastards, learning how to spell their correctly.

      • ythu

        … it’s i before e you idiot

      • Jersey Jeff

@ythu No, it’s “THEIR”. This is one of the exceptions to I before E. You’re the idiot.

      • ythu

Crappy Jersey school sytem don’t teach you nothin

      • dequeen

you’re a moron and really should refrain from typing….you’re really showing your ignorance

      • mae

ythu – as a parent who is struggling to put “their” kid through college, I am offended by you.

    • Kate

I personally know about 12 people in 12 different households who wouldn’t be part of those figures – as they’re all Australian and stream online. HBO ratings figures mean nothing.

  • Brandon J

    first!

    good stuff

    • ythu

      idiot

      • BP

Someone who can’t spell “their” doesn’t have the right to call someone else an idiot.

      • miss.

        can’t spell system either.

      • ythu

someone named BP should hide in a closet with Tom Cruise

  • Bob Jones

Just watched the first episode, and was not disappointed. Did a good job of including all of the important characters.

  • crispy

If Justin Bieber was in the episode, there would have been 20 million people watching.

    • Johnification

Yeah, HBO isn’t doing enough to court the “12 year old girls who steal their parents’ credit card to subscribe to HBO for one episode of one show” demographic. They could have a gold mine there.

    • TBFan

If they had put Justin Bieber in, they definitely would have lost me as a viewer. Unless he ended up as a vamp victim or something…

    • ME

Just want we want — 12 yr olds watching the quite graphic TB. Good suggestion. I’m in my 40s and can barely handle it.

    • who cares

@crispy…i thought your obsession with posting about justin beiber only included pop music articles on ew. this tv show has nothing to do with justin beiber. you are f*cking sick and need help.

    • Wil

      Guys…no feeding the trolls.

  • Jenny

Lol, after all that excessive HBO hype I was thinking it’d be higher then that. But those are still good ratings. The premier was decent.

  • jack hart

SOOKIE IS MINE!! … awesome news, best line of the nite “Conscience off; d–k on.”

    • KRG

Agreed! …About the best line of the night not about Sookie. You may have her and I will take Sam;-)

  • wierdalexj

The ratings probably went up because everyone who watched it at 9pm (6pm on the west coast) called their friends and yelled that they finally got to see Eric Northman in the buff!

    • Lori

This! heck yeah lol finally got to see some Viking goodies!

    • TBFan

Yeah! I could not keep my eyes off his bottom to save my life. It was so perfect! He has such a great Viking bottom.

      • jessicab

what a bottom! eric is completely hot!

  • Manju

Awesome! So basically more American watch vampires than the world’s largest sporting event. Good culture. (ps, I prefer Bon Temps over soccer any time)

    • jack hart

we can watch soccer on demand on numerous espn channels –we want to watch true blood (live in blood curdling color)

    • who cares

      soccer is boring

    • Xanadu West

What I like best about soccer is that I don’t watch it.

  • fernando

As the season moves forward we will see the first hour they give it will get 6 million and then with the recap will be 7 million and then next season it will start with 7 million and the recaps with 8 million, true blood has the chance to only gain veiwers not lose them, trust me too many people are in love with this show and they spread the word and more people fall in love with it, it is one of the highest rating show on cable.

  • Lori Gerling

Anytime you get to see Alexander Skarsgard in the buff, ratings will go up!!!!

    • Ashley

Too true. Plus the dude is an amazing actor, along with a lot of the other cast members.

  • Staurt

This is pretty good – the ratings reflected a pretty darn good episode of True Blood – i had to watch it online as i live in the UK – i will be damned if i have to wait till next year for it.

  • rochelle

    OOOOOWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! (wolf howl :)

  • Ann

OK..The “Justin Bieber” comment is wrong! 12 year old girls should not be watching this show. It is an adult show for a reason!!! The show is making the ratings it should be making right now. We are only in the 3rd season. Give it some time…it will get better. Premier was “awesome.” So happy they are back!

    • Nicotine

The 12 year old girls have the stupid Twilight series to get their vampire fix. True Blood is for the adults.

      • Karen

Well, I’m an adult and I actually think that True Blood is far from being a quality show. In my opinion, there is more gratuitous sex than there are storylines. If that’s what an “adult” show is, then count me out.

      • Kerry

well I think its strange that someone who doesn’t even like this show or think its quality would bother to read an article about its ratings- I love this show, so I would probably not like you

      • Ashley

Actually the storylines are great, and premium cable channels are the only ones where you see nudity, and i for one think a lot of Americans are total prudes about sex, and I am one. Get over it.
