The debut of Hot in Cleveland posted record gains for TV Land on Wednesday, attracting 4.75 million viewers and posting triple-digit gains on the night across all key demographics. It was the most-watched telecast ever in the network’s history. The comedy starring Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White earned a 1.9 rating and averaged 2.0 million viewers among the network’s target adults 25-54 audience and also averaged 1.3 million among Women 25-54.
Hot in Cleveland is filmed in front of a live studio audience and revolves around three best friends who arrive in Cleveland on a fluke and end up making it their home.

I LOVED IT! Luv all 4 of these ladies! And tossing Jon Sneider in was..extra frosting!! Too bad this is a TV Land thing- It should be on one of the bigger networks so we can be sure more episodes will be made and not have to suffer thru 3months of non-stop previews rather than actual shows!!
I liked the pilot. It has a lot of potential. And though I enjoy Betty White, I thought she was the weak link of the episode. I see the character as more a Cloris Leachman type than sweet, sunny Betty White.
Sue Ann Nivens….
Guess you don’t know Betty too well, as that ‘sweet and sunny’ Betty White is all an act – the real Betty is more like Sue Ann Nivens from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
I agree with HD. And it has nothing to do with not knowing Betty White, as I’ve loved her on both Golden Girls and Mary Tyler Moore. I love Betty, but I didn’t think she added anything to the show. It happens.
The following episodes have been better than the pilot. I think Betty White’s role is more in the supporting category.
John Schneider MMMMMMMM!
Took me a minute to realize it was him but not much longer than a minute. I didnt know it was him till they did a close up shot when he was talking to Valarie (WHO BTW.. looks just like she did when she was on One day at a time. WTG Val for losing all the weight and you are still cute as a button. Happy Jane Leeves got another gig too. I loved her on Frasier. Welcome back to TV Jane, Valarie, Betty and Webdie. I hope the show lasts. I LOVE IT! Bettys best was back on Mary Tyler Moore. I can see her now jumping Lou Grants bones and also when he threw her in that wedding cake on MTM. AWESOME SHOW that was!
I think people who liked this show should stop smoking crack and check into rehab.
I get it, all the people commenting on this show actually work on the show because there is no way that many people can like this crappy show.
I love love Hot In Cleveland it’s the BEST show on TV. The chemistry between the actors is phenomenal and assume. I hope the show continues for years to come. I rate the show 1 to 10 I give the show a BIG 10.
sincerely Joan
I know it’s filmed in front of a live studio, but it sounds like a laugh track being used? It was a little painful, because so many of the jokes weren’t that funny. My favorite parts were of course the Betty White parts! The rest wasn’t very good in my opinion. Hope this show gets better.
Actually, I think it was recorded in front of a live studio audience which I’m pretty sure means they tape it, then show it to a live studio audience and record their laughter. I could be wrong about that though.
Most sitcoms leave in the original audience laughter but “enhance” it by using a laugh track.
No, they tape in front of a live audience, but I think they augment the track afterward.
It started out being filmed in front of a live audience then they all died from the intense level of crappyness that is this show. So, they had to use a laugh track which really improved the show, if you’re stupid.
I like the live studio audience for comedies shows–it’s been missing for a few years. Most current sitcoms use laugh tracks–the producers on those shows just don’t want to have someone laughing way too hard in the audience and don’t want us to observe it while watching. But I’ll take one of those funny batches of laughter in the live audience instead of a canned laugh track. It makes it real.
Sometimes they put a laugh track in because the laughter was so long in the live taping that they actually have to edit it down so you can hear the next line. All TV Shows do it. Not to say they were not tracks but I know in my Friends DVD’s I remember them saying that sometimes they have to cut the live laughter down/
It is funny! What planet are you on, Cleveland?
OMG you’re so funny. i peed myself.
what was funny about that?
Yo obviously don’t know Cleveland. I don’t live there, but it’s one of my favorite places on Earth. Visit the Flatts, you are bound to run into a miriad of sports players or even Drew Carey. I have met LeBron (have pictures) Drew (have pictures) Kevin Garnett, and even Derek Jeter. I never go there without my camera. Summertime is the best…you can have dinner on the water or just party on a peer. Don’t make suck a rude comment on what you’ve heard. I love Cleveland, and I love this show!
I didn’t find it that funny either. Okay, it was bad. But it’s only the pilot episode so it has the potential to get better. Plus… Betty White is awesome!
Loved, loved, loved it. It’s about time a program came on that is fresh and lively and has nothing to do with vampires or blood and guts. I’m going to watch every episode. Yahoo
there are 3 vampire shows currently running on tv compared to over 10 crime shows. yeah, a lot of vampire shows.
From the previews I expected it to be epically stupid, but I was pleasantly(?) surprised to find that it was merely stupid, without a modifying adverb.
Quote of the Day!
Great assessment. I really had low expectations and for the most part it met them. Very low-brow humor, but kinda refreshing in some ways. Harkens back to another era. Betty White was definitely the hi-lite. Her timing and delivery is great. I laughed out loud on some of her deliveries…with almost anyone else saying the lines, they would have fallen flat.
The material was beneath all of them, especially Betty. But, as usual, she takes what she has and makes the most of it.
Jane Leeves was the most annoying of the four to me (which is odd because she was a favorite character on Frasier)…probably because she did little more than make “woman as piece of meat” jokes.
Uh, isn’t “merely” a modifying . . . oh, forget it. Stupid comment doesn’t merit another stupid comment.
lol, Jay, I thought it was not all that bad. I’m hoping it will get better. And yeah, I was also surprised at how much I didn’t like Jane Leeves! Loved her on Frasier. Hopefully, the series will find its “sea legs”; sometimes the pilot is a little awkward. But it ain’t gonna be no 30 Rock.
30 Rock sucks. I can’t stand that show. So not funny!!!!
Most first pilot shows of sitcoms are always weak. Living Single’s first show from 1993 was weak, but it got better after the second, 3rd and 4th shows. When the actresses of Hot in Cleveland get a feel with the writing and material, then the show will get better. Most reviews I’ve read have been mixed.
For a pilot episode it was fine. I found it very entertaining, and already have a favorite quote from it: “We appear to have landed in a dimension where men hit on women their own age; we owe it to science to investigate.”
Yeah, JJD, I really did like that line (especially at my age).
It is because of Betty White. Betty is awesome. I am looking forward to see the second show next week.
LOVE IT!! I wasn’t expecting much but I found myself laughing so loud and loving it
Jane Leeves was hilarious, I’ve missed her on TV. I’m looking forward to the next episode.
I enjoyed it and hope that Betty White gets more lines in the up coming episodes. I only hope I remember to watch each week, since TV Land isn’t one of the channels that I watch the most.
I didn’t care for it. I’m only 21, so maybe that’s why I don’t get some of the humor and don’t find it funny. I did really like Betty White though.
That makes sense. I’m 49 and can totally relate to middle-aged women, plus I’ve watched these actresses for years. Watch Community and Chuck! They’re better shows and funny for twenty-somethings (and me).
I love Wendie Malick!
Loved the show! Truly a great cast! I especially love Wendie Malick. Always liked her the best on Just Shoot Me!
me too!
Haven’t watched it yet but will tonight. But I always liked Wendy Malik on Dream on on HBO.
It was pretty funny- there were not many predictable moments- which I find refreshing- and Jane Leeves was pretty funny- let’s kill him….
Not predictable??? So much of it was predictable. I just sat waiting for the punch line I knew was coming. You can see the setup and know when the line’s coming…and you also know what’s going to be said.
It’s so wrote it’s a shame. I laughed twice watching last Wednesday’s. Chuckled was more like it, actually. No gut wrenching laughs.
This is just another typical sitcom in the wasteland of the past 20 years. They don’t know how to make them any longer.
Damn! I’m hoping the big networks catch on and decide to air it.
I wonder why ABC, CBS or NBC didn’t pick it up? That show would have been a major hit on a broadcast network instead of cable’s smaller audiences. It would have been perfect on ABC since they rebounded with a few hit comedies in their Wednesday lineup this past season. But they were so committed to Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor that they never got to it.
No one picked it up because it sucked and it isn’t going to get better. There is no way Betty White can carry all this trash on her frail old shoulders.
