Armchair Casting Director: 'Desperate Housewives'

desperate-housewivesImage Credit: Florian Schneider/ABCWisteria Lane is getting a transfusion of new blood this fall in the form of four new characters (not including the incoming diva played by Vanessa Williams). Deets on the rookie quartet (and casting tips) are below…

Maxine: A sweet lady in the 60-80 year-old age range. Maxine is Mike and Susan’s new neighbor in their apartment building, and she has an unusual job that brings in some additional income.
Armchair Casting Director suggestion: Santa Barbara‘s Judith McConnell

Beth: This quirky, sweet thirtysomething woman was Paul Young’s prison pen pal-cum-wife. She’s damaged emotionally but also capable of humor.
Armchair Casting Director suggestion: Charlotte Ross.

Penny Scavo: Tom and Lynette’s 12-year-old daughter is being recast. Not sure why.
Armchair Casting Director suggestion: I’ve got nothin’.

Keith: Hot, sexy, 30-year-old contractor. He’s a charming playboy who turns up on Wisteria Lane. Think Mike Delfino 15 years ago.
Armchair Casting Director suggestion: Eric Winter

If Emily Mortimer ever wanted to do TV, she would be perfect as Beth.

    • Strepsi

How about NOT cast 4 new characters and give the awesome BOB and LEE more than 4 lines???

    • tracy

Judith Mcconnell is perfect for Maxine. Would love to see her work again. Iv’e never watched DH, but I would if she was on it!!

  • robertjwilson1

Tee hee hee! You said “…cum-wife”.

  • Joleen

    Alyssa Milano for Beth!

  • Rueben

Perhaps Madeline Carroll as Penny; but she’s 14 so she’d be just a little too old and would look it; but Elle Fanning is 12. Just going age appropriate.

  • Dave

Umm, just because they are recasting the role of Penny Scavo doesn’t mean she’s a new character. It’s the same character. So there are only three new characters to be cast, not four.

  • orville

It’s too bad that Julie Benz has already done the show. She’d have been perfect for Beth. And I’m afraid Charlotte Ross can’t quite pull off 30-something anymore if Glee is anything to go by.

How about Marlo Thomas for Maxine?

  • eliott256

So shall we guess that Penny Scavo is being recast because she was the baby swapped at birth and so they’ve changed the actress to look like the biological mother (guess, Vanessa Williams)

  • kellen

Riki Lindhome sounds perfect for Beth. Name doesn’t sound familiar? She had a 5-episode arc on ‘Gilmore Girls’ and played Jeanine in the second episode of ‘Pushing Daisies’. Very quirky indeed.

    • Tammi

She did a great guest star on House this year too & had a pilot that wasn’t picked up. I second Riki!

  • Scott

I love love love LOVE Eric Winter and would tune back into DH in a heartbeat if he were cast. Excellent casting suggestion!

  • Spike

If we’re going with soap stars for Maxine, there’s a long line of great choices. Topped in my opinion by Marj Dusay – fabulous soap actress and y’all remember her as Blair’s mom on Facts of Life.

Also: Linda Dano, Robin Strasser (hey, if Tuc can do OLTL part time so can Robin), Vicky Wyndham, and even Judith Light (it might give her and Vanessa Williams a chance to fight again!)

    • Miriam

I was thinking Robin Strasser as well. And let’s keep it in the OLTL family and get Brett Claywell to be Keith.

  • Allan

Alyssa Milano will be perfect for Beth.

  • bunker

Why would they recast Penny? Maybe they’re just promoting her to a regular?

  • B

    Maxine… Betty White

    • fireislanded

      Maxine could be Joan Collins

  • Kvivik

Ummmm, Elle Fanning is 12. Isabelle Furhman (Orphan) is 13. Abigail Breslin is 14, which is pushing it, but all 3 would be great as Penny.

    JASON DOHRING *is* NuPenny!
