'Weeds' scoop: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Alanis Morissette to return

Tags: , , News, Scoop

weedsImage Credit: Cliff Lipson/ShowtimeTwo familiar faces will sprout up on the new season of Weeds.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is set to reprise her role as Nancy’s older sister, Jill, in one episode, while Alanis Morissette is returning for two episodes as Nancy’s baby doc (and girlfriend to Andy).

Weeds‘ sixth season, which premieres Aug. 16, finds Nancy & Co. on the run after Shane whacked Pilar with a croquet mallet.

Other upcoming guest stars include Linda Hamilton as a Seattle-based pot grower and, as my frenemy recently scooped, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as a love interest for Nancy.

Alanis was great last season, but nothing will be able to fill the void of Elizabeth Perkins.
    I’m not watching this season.

    • Bruce_F

Perkins’ character, Celia Hodes, has been almost completely intolerable since the show left Agrestic. This isn’t a big loss.

      • Carla

I always hated Celia, and rooted for A)her entire family to divorce her, B) Doug to strangle her during sex, or C) for Nancy to get enough of her and just whack her already!! Good riddance Celia! No offense to Elizabeth Perkins though-wouldn’t hate the character so much if she weren’t a great actress!

    • GoMe!

No, Elizabeth Perkins is still appearing this season! But this season will still be her last season. So, yay, you can still watch!

      • David4

        Umm… no she isn’t.

  • David4

This show jumped the shark, nuked the fridge and then nuked the shark. Wow what a mess the last few seasons have been and it doesn’t sound like this one will be much better.

    • Doc Jensen Minion No 1

Ha ha ha!! I totally agree!

    • Catherine

I totally agree. I only recently started up with the show (Watched all 5 seasons on Netflix in about a week and a half), but it really felt like the show evolved too fast and away from it’s roots. The interesting concept of suburban-mom-dealer has morphed into I-don’t-know-what. I don’t get Showtime, but I will probably still try to catch this new season on DVD just to see the insanity.

  • Drew

    Jillian Price-Gray…with a hyphen!

  • Ceballos

Alanis was ok, but I thought Jennifer Jason Leigh was pretty excellent, and I’d like to see her rivalry with Nancy explored a bit more.

  • Jack

I’ll never stop watching, but I have to admit the show really went downhill once they left Agrestic. I wouldn’t be surprised though if this were the final season.

    • Shawn

I completely agree with you! I still watch it, but I wish that they hadn’t left Agrestic. I think that was a mistake.

      • mary please parker

You’re both crazy. Season 5 was insane genius. It’s a totally different show now, and for the better. Deal with it.

  • Trace

I wasn’t a big fan of Alanis’s character, but I did love Jennifer Jason Leigh so I’m happy to see her return.

Bruce_F is right about Celia being intolerable, but the show as a whole as really dropped in quality the last couple of seasons.

  • Josie

If we’re going to have all Andy’s exes back, why not bring back my favorite: Zooey Deschanel.

    • Cheery

Seriously, she’s the one I miss and was the funniest.

    • Jay

Agreed. Zooey Deschanel was the BEST of Andy’s exes. I think she could single-handedly save this show if she returned

    • izikavazo

      That would be the best.

    • Lindsey

Absolutely. I’m not even sure I’ll watch the new season, but she was the best recurring character by far.

  • josephrileyland

I, too, prefer the series when it was set in Agrestic. But… I also recognize that the series has evolved more naturally than any other show on TV. I love that they have explored the darker and darker sides of drug dealing. It makes sense. I applaud the producers and writers for not sticking with just the same story over and over, which is where we would be if we were still in Agrestic.

  • jfms777

I wish they would return to Agrestic.

  • bunker

    no Perkins, no show.

  • Dropper

At least they are moving away from Mexico. Still, I think it’s too late for this show to get back on track.

  • Vince

I still love the show, but do miss
Agrestic. I also really miss Hellia(?) and Conrad. Not to mention, the crew left Agrestic right after Nancy and Conrad finally consumated thier long running attraction for each other. I really wanted that story line to continue. But you gotta admit, the ending scene of last season’s finale was pretty shocking.

    • LP

Ooooh imagine how fantastic it would be if Conrad came back into the story somehow. I miss him and Helia on the show as well. And he and Nancy had such great chemistry.

    • Catherine

The last scene redeemed the whole season for me. Go Shane!

  • Scytherius

This show jumped the shark when they left Agrestic. Nancy Botwin went from someone who had to do what she had to do for her family, to a reckless criminal who should not be allowed near children. The acting in this show is fantastic, but the show itself took a real dive.

  • izikavazo

Oh that GOD!! I was so worried that we’d never find out what happened to Alanis Morissette.

  • Peter

I think the show is still really good but in a different way.. It was more of a comedy kind of for the first two seasons and now it has shifted to mostly drama. I’m hoping that there are at least two more seasons left even though I would love it for more than that. And with Celia, I hope they at least write her off the show well, not like some scenario where she gets killed in the first few seconds or they never mention her again. It sucks that Dean and Isabelle will be gone too I have heard.

    • Peter

      First three seasons*
