Now, now! Before you go drawing mustaches on half of the Glee cast’s yearbook photos because some of the show’s biggest stars won’t be attending Comic-Con next month, perhaps you should read why that’s the case: They weren’t asked to!
A Twentieth Century Fox Television rep explains: “Last year, we brought down Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, and Dianna Agron. Because we have such a large cast and we can’t bring everyone every year, this year we decided to bring down some of the cast who didn’t get to go last summer.
“So this year,” the spokesman continues, “Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Heather Morris, and Naya Rivera will get to experience the convention, as well as co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.”
And what about Jane Lynch? Comic-Conventioneers sure as hell wanna hear how Sue sees it. According to the rep, she had a scheduling conflict.
So, to sum up, no, the stars aren’t dissing the fans. The producers are just spreading the love. And since Colfer, Riley & Co. will be bringing some never-before-seen clips to their July 25 Q&A, maybe we can do the same. What do you think?

What do I think?
I think “what the heck does Glee have to do with COMICS?”
Do any of the characters on the show even read comics? NO.
The Big Bang Theory has more in common with COMIC-CON than Glee does.
Should there be a convention for musicals, would it be okay for comic book fans to show up dressed like Darth Vader?
Amen!
What you said.
Then you should be raving mad about shows like Castle and Bones being there. Can’t just single one show out when it applies to many!
Also, they’re catering to the cult tv show and movies now, that’s why they’re even there.
Who says I’m not?
This article is not about Castle or Bones is it?
Glee is not a cult show. A cult show does not get good ratings hence the reason it’s a cult show.
Maddy – a cult show can get good ratings!! Lost and The X-Files were two of the biggest cult shows ever and they got good ratings. I think a cult show is one with a rabid fanbase.
If we’re gonna play the WhedonVerse card, Joss Whedon guest directed an episode of Glee, one that featured Neil Patrick Harris also of WhedonVerse. Besides, Glee’s not the first non-comic cult following there and certainly not the last, and personally I’d rather go for Glee than for Twilight (blech)
Not really. No annoying singers around.
I agree with Cal. Glee is so much better than twilight, especially when the movies are very inaccurate.
Bones did an episode last season set around a Comic Con-like event and it was very successful. As for Castle, he dressed up for the Holloween episode at the very beginning in his ‘Firefly’ cowboy costume playing a space cowboy in his words that was a shout out to all the Browncoats so Castle has a niche in that world as well. Glee? That seems far-fetched to me.
@Becca
Not defending Twilight, but what are the inaccuracies? Do you mean that vampires that do not exist shine instead of bursting into flames? Because that started in Nosferatu and not the original Dracula.
Heres why we have bones and castle there, David Boreanez and Nathan Fillion
The thing is the Comic-con had not been “all” about comics for many years now. Look at the movies and tv shows that have shown up at the con the past years. Glee is definitely not the first “non-comic” show that has been there.
That doesn’t make it right.
Dan has a point – a lot of these people bring their kids – and while the adults may not read comics – many of their kids do (and its a way to hook the next generation).
Exactly why I’m attending NYCC this year instead of SDCC, more comic oriented.
Since NYCC is run by a big commercial company whose sole purpose is to emulate the kind of business that SDCC (which is still a nonprofit) has managed to pull with Hollywood, I wouldn’t say it’s more comic oriented.
Comic-con has been all about pretty much every corner of the entertainment industry for awhile now.
It’s arguably more NOT comic related stuff than is these days.
All the networks having panels for their shows at the con, and none (with the except of Smallville) have anything to do with comics at all.
Human Target will be there!
And Supernatural, which has related comic series.
ComicCon hasn’t been just about COMICS for years. It’s more about the franchises with big or cult fanbases than anything else these days.
It’s stupid to whine about Comic Con not being about comics anymore, since that’s been the case for awhile. There are still tons of smaller comics conventions across the country that cater to comics and sci-fi fans – just accept that the SDCC has become an entertainment convention more than anything else.
it hurts my fanboyness.
That’s the problem!!! People that do actually attend Cimic Con for COMICS have to stand in line longer because they have people attending for things other than comics.
What lines? I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but as someone who’s been going to the Con since the ’80s(!), I think the registration lines are better now because they have more people handling the passes and it’s all computerized. The lines for the more popular events have always been bad but the “get in line at least one panel before” rule still holds true for most of the more popular comic book related panels (e.g. last year’s Batman panel) The huge lines for Hall H and Ballroom 20 can be maddening but most of the panels in the really big rooms are for the film & TV shows so if you’re only there for comics, then you shouldn’t be in those hideous lines. I do hate how crowded the Exhibit Hall has gotten and the fact that non-Gold/Silver age single issues are vanishing from the floor (even Mile High just brought a bunch of trades) but that’s a problem that’s an industry-wide problem, not just Comic Con specific.
BTW, the Glee panel was at the Hilton Bayfront last year and while it did draw a decent crowd, most of the people there were waiting for the Heroes panel. Having said that Joss Whedon sat in my row for the screening of Glee episode 2 and then promptly snuck out of the room when the panel started!
Glee doesn’t ask you to attend if you don’t want to. Just like they don’t ask you to watch.
It’s a bunch of TV shows from all networks including HBO and Showtime there too. Sheesh this isn’t something new.
do you know for sure that none of them read comics?
Having seen the first half of the season so far, I know that none of the characters read a single comic, saw a single fantasy show, or watched a single sci fi movie.
Did that change in the second half?
Again I ask, would it be okay to attend something related to musicals dressed like Darth Vader?
@ MichaelSecal: Tina dressed up like a vampire to scare Principal Figgins into letting her dress like a goth again. Oh, and she said that her mom wouldn’t let her watch Twilight b/c she thinks Kristen Stewart looks like a bitch. Does that count? LOL
I couldn’t agree with this more. I love comics and I love Glee but they don’t belong together.
Direct quote from Wikipedia on the definition of COMICS:
Comics (from the Greek κωμικός, kōmikos “of or pertaining to comedy” from κῶμος – kōmos “revel, komos”,[1] via the Latin cōmicus) is a graphic medium in which images convey a sequential narrative. The term derives from the mostly humorous early work in the medium, and came to apply to that form of the medium including those far from comic.
I was just wondering if you happened to know the Glee cast members… Apparently you do if you are saying that they don’t read comics… If you don’t then there is NO reason as to why they should not be at Comic-Con… If even one of them reads comics, which it just so happens SEVERAL do, if you would take the chance to look up info before you speak about stuff you dont know about, then WHOMEVER wants to go to Comic-Con should go! I hope that they are there and you happen to run into them and they throw a big Kamayamaya your way you idiot!
That’s the same thing was thinking, Comic Con used to just be about comics and now it’s overrun by Twilight and Glee, I hate Twilight but at least they have graphic novels now, but Glee is just a television show, what a complete fail.
The Twilight graphic novel is an insult to all graphic novels.
@Michael: “The Big Bang Theory has more in common with COMIC-CON than Glee does.”
.
WRONG. I can tell you as a comics fan with a BA in theater (dramaturgy and stage management, with a lot of college musicals under my belt) that there’s a LOT of overlap between theater and comics. People in the performing arts tend to be interested in other artforms as well, and vice-versa.
Glee, btw, is “Freaks and Geeks: The Musical.” And no one (at least, anymore) disputes the presence of Apatowians at Comic-Con.
.
I think the “He-Man Woman-Haters Club” mentality of fanboys has needed to go away for a long time.

PS: As others pointed out before I got here, Joss directed “Dream On,” which IMNSHO is the single best episode of Glee so far.
Nice reply!

Comicon is a JOKE now. Just another opportunity for supposed FANS to inundate themselves with advertisements trying to convince themselves that the toys and doo-dads they buy have value and meaning.
La-hoo-za-hers!
Anyone who types “La-hoo-za-hers” is a joke.
I feel the same. It’s an immediate reaction to this article’s headline: “Why the hell is ‘Glee’ at Comic-Con in the first place and why should we care who’s missing and why!?” Comic-Con has become waaaay too commercial totally has lost it’s roots. Such a shame for us fanboys who adore actual comics.
PUH. LEASE. Does the pop-culture aspect of the convention somehow interfere with the reason why you go? Have the comics displays, panels, or features gotten any smaller? What, do you suffer some sort of unholy prejudice because you’re wearing a Squirrel Girl shirt? I’m pretty sure comics have a stronger presence at the con now because of the money pouring in from the mainstream media trying to share a spot of Comic-Con fame. I don’t get why people, especially the ones upon which Comic-Con was founded, are being so anal about the con getting bigger, drawing in bigger audiences, and overall offering more than it’s ever been able to before.
Get out of that secluded little fanboy mindset and share the love. There is virtually no difference between a hardcore comic fan and a hardcore gleek. Even mainstream TV shows have fans that are devoted enough to put comic fans to shame. You aren’t any more special just because you like comics.
If you want a convention truer to the idea, you should check out Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA, each Labor Day weekend. It attracts over 350 celebrities, from Stan Lee to Linda Hamilton to Timothy Zahn (and this year, a huge Star Trek presence). Dragon*Con tends to focus on honoring and reflecting shows of the past, but also celebrates the current (Warehouse 13, V, etc.) Last year, 45,000 people attended the four day convention. It’s very family friendly, and unlike ComicCon, there is something going on, 24/7, for four days straight.
Dragon*Con, the convention that rejected Peter S. Beagle as a guest this year? Yeah, way to keep “true” to itself.
“Should there be a convention for musicals, would it be okay for comic book fans to show up dressed like Darth Vader?”
It would be more fun that way! =)
It’s because Heroes got canceled so they had a slot open, besides, Glee is the biggest thing on the planet right now, why not bring in more people to Comic-Con via Glee fantards.
Have you ever been to the san diego comic con? Its way more than just comics!
It’s not just about comics any more. And hasn’t been for years, but comic-con just flows off your tongue easier than cult-con, or sci-fi-com (which I think that the syfy channel has one of anyway.)
I wish I knew, but I always ask that question.
Was I the only person who figured that out as soon as the press release went out? I didn’t realise it was a mystery!
Weee! They are not going! Now Comic Con will really be interesting withou all that awful singing and cliche characters!
What are you talking about? Cast members are going.
Read much?
What a hater! You don’t think some Comic-Con aren’t going to dress up as cliche characters. Some of them might sing about it too.
Awful singing? What are you, insane? Several cast members have gotten TONYS for their performances or were OBC members of Tony award winning shows (Hairspray, Spring Awakening, South Pacific’s revival…).
And I’d rather see cast members of Glee than other casts that have gone to Comic Con before *coughTwilightcough* So it’s not entirely comic related, big whoop. Cons will have things that aren’t entirely related there at points. In the end, it’s having fun that matters anyway.
I think that that’s awesome. Not that I don’t have lots of love for Lea, Cory, Matt, and Dianna, but the rest of the cast is great as well and it will be nice to get to hear from them for a rare change.
I am glad that the show is giving the other cast members a chance to shine, and after this almost all of the glee club members will have had the chance to sttend – except, what happened to Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.)and Matt Rutherford (Dijon Talton). I would really love to see these two actors and their characters recognized more in the future.
They haven’t been promoted to full-time cast members yet.
I’m thinking that I hate the fact the panel is on Sunday as I have to fly back to the east coast that morning
I’m going to be there, and it sucks that I won’t get to see Lea Michele charming the crowd again like she did last year. She’s actually the only reason I bothered getting tickets for this year.
I figured that they weren’t coming because they were there last year (but it is a shame they wont be there again this year with their fellow cast members) but saying that the cast is too large is just an excuse because Heroes has had pretty much their entire cast every year and they probably have about as many, if not more, cast members.
I’d probably say it’s a security reason, tbh.
I think it isn’t just that it is a large cast, but with fan favorites there, the fans might ignore the other folks so by sitting out those that were there last year, then other cast members get to shine.
the cast that’s going to be @ comic con can be considered “second stringers” but they are fan favorites. Everyone loves chris, mark, and amber. Even more so than lea and cory.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s true at all, just a vast generalization. I know plenty of people who can’t stand Chris, Mark, or Amber yet adore Lea and Cory. You don’t need to look much farther than song sales. As a poster above said, Lea can charm a crowd like no other, so it’s a shame we won’t be seeing her this year.
have to disagree. while i do love chris i am a much bigger fan of lea and cory than mark and amber. personal taste. it varies.
I’m a bigger fan of Cory than any of the other cast members. I can’t see what the fuss is about Mark at all.
Mark can sing much better than Cory … Cory’s voice is actually pretty weak. But Lea is my favorite female cast member. We don’t have to always lump the two together.
Mark DEF sings better than Cory. I really do love Cory (i think he’s hilarious) but i do prefer mark based on looks and other things. I see a little depth to him from random interviews I’ve seen but i don’t think he’s used to being in the spotlight. People say he’s a douche in interviews but I think it’s really because he’s very shy and sometimes doesn’t know what to say. if you look at things like his twitter you’ll see he’s probably not a bad guy-and he has a strange hobby for birds which is really something you don’t see everyday in a celebrity.
that’s just my 2 cents.
I think it’s not a matter of who sings better, it’s a matter of whose voice you like better. For me, I love the raw raspy quality of Cory’s voice. He’s my favorite on the show.
I agree with you. There is a character for everyone. I love Chris and don’t care at all for Lea or Cory. People are different. The panel is sold out anyway leads or no leads.
The panel was sold out before people knew that the leads weren’t going to be there…just saying. In my opinion, I would be pissed if I had bought tickets to see my favorite character who happens to be the lead, and she’s not there.
@Carly and for each pissed fan there would be a fan like me who would pay double for the ticket to see Chris, Heather, Naya, etc.
I don’t really like Amber, and while I like Chris alright, I would much rather meet Lea or Cory or Dianna. But I guess I would love to meet Mark and Heather and Naya too. Really I think they should have let everyone go.
And by don’t like Amber I mean I don’t really like Mercedes all that much. I honestly don’t know anything about Amber.
wrong. Chris is a fan favorite, bu Lea is the biggest fan favorite of all.

Speak for yourself. Lea is my favorite and if we’re judging by the music charts, she’s the majority of peoples’ favorite as well. But its not a bad idea…Chris and Amber are always funny in interviews. My honest reaction: meh.

You began your sentence with “speak for yourself” and then you want to speak for everyone else? Just because I happen to like “don’t rain on my parade” doesn’t mean I like Rachel the best. Lea is the most trained singer and she is the lead, of course she is going to sell more.I like her singing, but I still prefer every other character to Rachel.Don’t assume that just because someone buys a song by her she is their favorite on Glee. It’s absurd.
“speak for yourself” was for a reply way up the page, but it was lost with all the other comments and replies over time. And point taken re: songs and singing. Still, my reaction remains: meh.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Glee. However … Comicon has devolved. What’s next … CSI goes to ComiCon?
Comicon used to be just for loser dudes. Now it’s for loser dudes AND gals.

Ummm… actually, CSI did have a comic mini series that was at a Comic Con type event.
Comicon used to be just for loser dudes. Now it’s for loser dudes AND gals.
Thanks, that’s good to know; I’d love to hear from more of the cast. They get much bigger stars than the Glee cast, and Comic Con handles it great.
I was at CC last year, watched the first episode of Glee and loved it, was charmed by the cast that was there–and told all my friends. Which is why the TV and movie studios come to Comic Con: it’s ground zero for the buzz, especially for creative, quirky shows. Glee totally fits in there.
