Mary-Louise Parker on 'Weeds' costar Elizabeth Perkins' exit: 'I'm really sad'

weeds-mary-perkinsImage Credit: Cliff Lipson/ShowtimeWeeds‘ decision to part ways with Elizabeth Perkins for creative reasons has left more than just fans (Annie Barrett included) in need of a stiff drink. “It’s really sad — really sad,” sighs the show’s leading lady, Mary-Louise Parker. “And it’s sad for her.”

Given that much of Weeds‘ upcoming sixth season will find Parker’s Nancy on the run, producers would’ve struggled to find ways to integrate Perkins’ boozy PTA mom, Celia. But that doesn’t make her absence any less of a buzzkill, says Parker.

“I just can’t think of a single negative thing to say about Elizabeth Perkins,” she says. “I’m sure there are many because she’s a human being, but I worked with her for [five] years and she was a wonderful person in the morning and she was a wonderful person when you worked an 18-hour day.

“She’s giving, she’s sweet, she’s hilarious — she’s freakishly wonderful,” Parker continues. “And I just loved her acting. I don’t think anybody could have done what she did. I would watch her all the time and go, ‘God, I would have never thought to do that.’ I can’t really say enough good things about her.’”

Weeds‘ sixth season (and first sans Perkins) premieres on Aug. 16.

Weeds needs to part ways from the air waves. This show is past it’s prime. Like 3 seasons ago. Yet sadly I still watch, hoping it will get better.

ITA. Though I love Weeds, it needs to start winding down stat. Like this season, with max one more.

Megan, you are insane. The first season of Weeds is the weakest. It only began to hit it’s stride in the 2nd, and the 5th season was its best yet. I don’t get Showtime, so I can’t wait until season 6 comes out on DVD.

Wait, I thought the sixth season was Perkins’ last! Oh dear, now I’m even more sad.

Nothing against the actress but I HATED Celia. Every time she would be on screen I’d cringe. I certainly won’t miss her and feel the show will be stronger without her.

She was TERRIBLE. She’s a good actor, but her storyline was weak. Conrad and Helia were much better characters. It would be worse if Andy was leaving the show.

I loved Celia. How could you not love Celia as a prison bitch. Being on the run with Celia would have been hilarious.

  • Adrienne

Is it a coincidence that there’s an ad for restalyne below the article?

I love the cast on that show, perkins included, but the story has gotten beyond absurd. It has gone from clever satire to full-on crazy adventure fantasy.

Perkins is amazing, but Celia jumped the shark after season 2. The writers screwed up that character big time and turned into from a tragic but slightly loveable bitch into a pathetic and desperate bimbo.

The show is so close to the jump itself. Seriously, international drug queen? Is that what Weeds was about? It’s not too late. Find the suburban charm and the juxtaposition of drugs and suburbia again and we may actually enjoy season 6 without Perkins.

I gave up Weeds after awful season 4 when the social commentary and fun was almost gone from the show.

I still watch the show but the whole vibe of the show changed after they burned the neighborhood down and left. For me it turned dark and just wasn’t the same show. Maybe that was the writers intention as Nancy got further into the business but for me the show changed enough that I didn’t like the people anymore, especially Nancy. I liked Celia and hate to see her go… just like I miss still miss Conrad and the others.

Agreed. I really wish they would find a way to bring Conrad and Helia back.

Weeds stopped being a good show when they left Majestic/Agrestic. Let’s hope this is going to be their last season. Too bad for Perkins, although I loathed Celia.
