'Criminal Minds' update: Cook and Brewster returning -- but for how long?

It looks like all those letters, tweets, and petitions (sort of) paid off: Exiting Criminal Minds star A.J. Cook will be back this fall for a brief stint to tie up JJ’s storyline.

Additionally, a Minds source confirms that her costar Paget Brewster — who has been ironing out a reduced-episode arrangement with the show — has finalized a deal to return as well.

Keep reading for details on the length of the actresses’ respective returns…

“Thanks for your undying support but it’s a done deal,” Cook confirmed this evening via Twitter. “I’ll be doing 2 [episodes] to wrap up [my storyline]. [I am] excited for what’s next and hope you’ll come along!”

Brewster, meanwhile, will be back as Prentiss for “a significant number of episodes,” says a Minds insider.

The CBS procedural is also moving forward with plans to introduce a new female agent at some point this fall.

What say you Minds fans? Does news of Cook’s short comeback take some of the sting out of her departure? Or will you settle for nothing less than a full-time return? Sound off below!

Bittersweet news. I suppose CBS expects us to be satisfied with this, but I’m not. Oh well. At least we’ll get to say good-bye to JJ.

    • drkern

J.J. was pregnant recently on the show. Was that made up by the writing staff or did they have to write around Ms. Cook’s actual pregnancy?

This could be your answer to her leaving the show since perhaps she just wants to stay home with her real life child rather than put up with the demanding and hectic schedule of the show.

Nope, because you were all too busy whining.

      • Becky

Um, no. Her contract was not renewed. This was not her choice.

      • Lauren

No. She was just as shocked as the fans to find out she wouldn’t be returning. It was NOT her decision to leave.

      • Myacova

Nope – her contract was not renewed and a shock to both her and all of her fans. This is the answer to her leaving the show – perhaps you were too busy sleeping instead of checking it out further.

      • Stace34

This was a contract decision made by CBS not A J Cook. One of the reasons I loved this character is that she struggled like many women to balance career and family life. If they have her leave to be with her child like a woman can’t handle both career and family I will be very disappointed. I will miss that character on the show and it will leave a void that will not easily be filled.

      • PK

Leaving Criminal Minds was NOT AJ Cook’s choice. And, the decision to not renew her contract was a shock to her, the rest of the cast, and the fans. (Furthermore, the fans are not ‘whining’. They are venting their frustration because we will be witnessing the destruction of a wonderful ensemble cast by the end of this season. It is rare to find a show with excellent writing, and with a cast and crew that can pull off the intensity of that show episode after episode).

      • Rosemary

It was definitely not her choice if you followed her on Twitter.

      • monica

It is one thing if she chooses to leave the show, i would b disappointed, but hey, it is her choice, but 2 axe a great character for the sake of doing it 2 ‘refresh’ a show that HELLO!!! DOES NOT NEED IT???!!! is just plain STUPID! That is why these shows don’t last… the wrong people make these decisions…

      • Deb

AJ did not want to leave the show. They axed her. Read her Twitter account – the whole thing came as a blind-sided ambush to both actresses AS WELL AS the rest of the cast who are as unhappy about this as the fans.

      • M.

The pregnancy of Aj was written in after she told producers she was expecting.

      • Sheryl

JJ’s a real loss – so would Prentiss be if she goes. I don’t agree about cutting the male actors either – this is a really good cast with great chemistry – so far ahead of the spinoff, which doesn’t cut it – very mediocre, at best. Think about bringing AJ back, and if Prentiss agrees, full time – but if she only wants part-time – that’s better than her being gone completely.

      • Marie

I didn’t watch the first 2 seasons, and that was when I just could not get enough. Best series ever on TV
and yes I would like to see both ladies back. They made a great team

    • rewolfe

I’m still not happy with this decision. I’m glad that AJ won’t just disappear from the show but still I think there are other people on the show that should have been let go before her. It does seem like CBS is trying to make it an all male show and I don’t think that is right at all. Rossi would have been my choice to let go just because he doesn’t bring anything to the show. Is it true that Paget is leaving the show too after next season? I thought they were just going to cut back her episodes which I’m not happy about at all by the way.

And to Scoop this is a place for people to vent their frustration about this topic if you don’t like it then stop reading it.

      • Cheryl Graham

I am 56 years old, yet I always feel like I have a “mom” on the show to comfort me through the painful story lines caused by the actions of those with “Criminal Minds.” JJ didn’t deserve this, nor does Emily deserve to be “reduced”, whatever the reason. There’s plenty of money to pay the two long-time female actors. Why not let a male actor go? NO?! Oh, dear, wouldn’t having to do that bring about the real motives behind sending off JJ and reducing Emily. This stinks, CBS. You WILL lose viewers and I hope you start counting. Remember the Cagney and Lacey debacle and how the network finally realized it paid them better to listen to viewers than to create their own ideas without input? This will be the same thing. Listen NOW while JJ and Prentice are still in the cast. And don’t you dare bring in more testosterone. People who are traumatized by the awful murders in the story lines, however fascinating the “minds” behind them are, still need some significant female influence to soothe the blow of the story. JJ and Emily just don’t deserve this — and neither do the viewers. I just don’t understand you and I expect to quit watching by the time Prentiss is gone. So what? I probably represent about a fraction of a cent to your lousy network made up of testosterone.

      • lizzie

I agree. Rossi would be a great bouncing in and out of story-lines character. I was not sorry to see Gideon go, either. The team was the spine of the show and the two previously mentioned characters were kind of extra bits of calcium along the spinous processes.

      • Courtney

Has anyone also noticed they are “prettying” them up!? What is up with reids hair?

    • JC MCGO

What pisses me off is CBS cancels great shows like THE UNIT and keeps sucky shows like “Flash Point” and “The Good Wife”. And again they take a perfect cast as what we see in “Criminal Minds”, a great chemistry with the actors, and they BUTCHER IT!! What Dumb as@#$%^& make these decisions! Its only a matter of time before they screw up NCIS also!! Another fun show, Las Vegas, What the hell are they thinking, I might as well start watching ABC Primetime.

      • textumbleweed

I’m not exactly sure why they canceled “The Unit”, I would think it had something to do with cost. Big names, big stunts, big budget- I was way ticked at the time but now I think it was a good thing as the story lines had gotten lost.
I really like “Flash Point” and was thrilled when it came back on. Great show! And since it is imported from Canada and CBS shares the cost it should stay in the line up.
Sorry you’re missing the boat on “The Good Wife”, it’s fabulous!
“Criminal Minds” is good, but with the cast changes (loss of AJ & Prentis) and unless something great happens in the story lines I’ll be letting this show go.

      • lizzie

So Annoyed! I’ve been enjoying many of CBS’s shows, but this is just unkind to those us us who’ve made CBS successful after its time in the cellar. Best wishes to AJ – you are terrific! I’ll miss JJ and soon, sadly, Emily. Why can’t men leave strong women characters well enough alone??

    • Bummed

This helps nothing. Fans weren’t trying to negotiate some kind of concession from CBS. We want our show to stay in tact. Bringing AJ back for 2 shows is a meaningless gesture and doesn’t change my feelings 1%.

      • bev harris

keep ourgirls intact they cant be beat. the spinoff was terrible give your viewers some credit. please!!!!!!!

    • Dawn

I can’t see the reason behind this. I feel that JJ is an important part to the team and should stay. And why hire a new actress when Prentice works just fine.

      • wondering

couldnt the reason these characters’ contracts werent renewed be becasue the were asking too much money? the enitre country is going through a financial crisis, and maybe shows have to cut back on what they pay their employees/actors-so maybe aj and paget werent on board with getting paid less..

    • maggie

They should really forget about the spin off, watch the show when they introduced the new cast. It was really bad, Keep this show going and forget about the spin off….really why are they doing this to us….loyal fans are loyal fans …dang…its just not right

      • Gary

Because, contrary to their motto, CBS really does NOT care. Maybe it’s time to switch loyalties back to NBC.

    • Shirley

I own all of the series that are available. I will buy last seasons dvd, but that is it! Take your spin off and shove it!!!!

    • KH

we need the whole team!that includes J.J!!!

    • KH

      BIG MISTAKE! RUINING SHOW!!!!

    • john shields

the release of aj cook is a joke and a paramount mistake. shie brought stability and class to the show. someone else thinks so they brought in a look-a-like who is a 6 to aj’s 10. whoever dreamed this up should be let go for lack of taste and lack of recognizing talent. she is missed her acting and her eyes! she should be brought back. or is this the beginning if the end for this show!
what will she be doing next!!!!

    • Donna

Why???? There is finally a show that works, not only with the cast, but also the audience. Why would CBS want to break this apart? To show us the other femalr character, leave JJ take the new kid!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lorie

Bittersweet news. I suppose CBS expects us to be satisfied with this, but I’m not. Oh well. At least we’ll get to say good-bye to JJ.

    • Erin

What the f*ck is the point of bringing a new female agent in? When this news first broke they said the show was trying to cut it’s budget to afford a spin-off with Forest Whitaker.

This is horse sh*t. I really like A.J.’s character. I’m so sick of CBS.

They got rid of Ghost Whisperer and Cold Case and now this?!

      • Anna

CBS should be careful; this is the kind of thinking that put NBC where it is.

      • PK

I agree with you, Erin. And, yes… I’m really going to miss AJ and Paget (hearing that this will be her last year), too. So, one (at least, partial) last season of an excellent ensemble cast, then I’m out of there, too. The nice thing about this day and age, is that there are many networks, and modes of entertainment, to choose from–unfortunately, I think it will be another long gap before I find another drama like this that I enjoy.

      • Princey

Erin, those are my sentiments exactly.

      • Cheery

@ PK: Noooo, where did you hear that?? Prentiss is my fav and if she leaves I’ll have no reason to keep up with the show. As it is, I’m only going to watch the ep’s she’ll be in.

      • pr

I absolutely agree. it’s not as if they need another agent to further the story and JJ was the one who handled the press and a voice to the victims. oh yeah CBS is too cocky and they are about to shoot themselves in the foot. Start paying attention to the viewers, its not like back in the day with only three networks there are other viewing alternatives.

      • Sara

I agree with Erin and Anna. Big mistake getting rid of JJ. I used to like CSI (Vegas) till they got rid of most of the main characters, now its happening with Criminal Minds. Makes no sense to bring in new characters! CBS is cutting its nose to spite its face. So sad.

      • beverly deusenberry

your spinoff was rotten. the new girl seemed like a robot. i have missed some of the shows because of jj being gone. its hard to imagine you people are such idiots. we are faithful viewers about to give you up. wake up!!!!!!!!

    • Scooptress

      Zzzz…

      • MaryJane

I agree with Anna, they mess with success, and screw up the shows turning viewers away. As for cutting the budget, WTF??? The show brings in the dough with advertisers, they can afford it. The networks are such damn cheapskates, it’s a wonder they have anything worth watching.

      • Amanda

        Anna got it exactly right…
Wonder if they will be any smarter than the ones at NBC who’ve run the once strong network into the ground.

I still say that they should have kept JJ. Her humanity is really important to the show. Morgan is the most expendable in my opinion. While he’s a good character,he doesn’t bring anything to the show that somebody else can’t bring. Prentiss is pretty important too because she’s probably the most witty and awkward out of all of them (the awkward part is excluding Reid), so she brings a different dynamic. I haven’t a clue what they really plan to do, I just know that I don’t plan to watch it.

    • Geo

Oh…and whoever this new chick is going to be…I imagine its an up and coming actress that will work for cheap….for the sake of the show she better be good enough to make up for the lack of JJ and Prentiss.

      • Misha

Of course, she’ll be cheaper. And if she turns out to just be a love interest for one of the guys, I’ll barf.

Then again, I’m already disgusted so I’m not turning on my TV to witness that.

      • cb

We have a right to whine as you call it. We are the fans of the show and without us the stations ratings go to shit and then they have no advertisers. No advertisers and the station goes broke probably not enough with just one show but still they need us watching their station which means they need shows we want to watch.

    • jennifer

Thank you GEO,I totally agree with you, morgan is the only one that could be replaced.I mean he’s nice to look at but aj and paget give the show heart

      • Deb

        Well Said!

    • seymour

Geo – you think that Morgan doesn’t bring anything that someone else couldn’t??? Are you blind??? He is flat-out the hottest man on television! Also, his character is the most interesting and multi-faceted – he was a nerdy kid but got into great shape and he’s smart and sensitive but a womanizer. Also, his relationship with Garcia is great and one of the more interesting aspects of the show.

I would stop watching immediately if Morgan left. In my opinion, he’s the only character who is totally not expendible.

      • Geo

I couldn’t disagree more. To me that relationship is the most annoying one on television. I wouldn’t advocate for Morgan to leave, but if he left…one thing I wouldn’t miss is Morgan and Garcia.

      • Lucas

actually Morgan does bring something that the ladies can’t. a relationship with Reid. the good doctor has always been a major focus of the show. huge chunk of Gideon’s character was about being a father figure and mentor to the young genius. Along with that was Morgan’s fun big brother vibe complete with the ‘i can pick on him cause i’m his big brother but you better back off’ attitude.
plus there is the whole Morgan/Garcia humor
as much as I love AJ, her character was really never well used. they wavered about with JJ’s status as an agent, her personal story was shoehorned to work in her real life pregnancy and over and over they were dropping hints about how she wasn’t sure she could cut it, etc. they were setting up the idea of cutting the character eventually and now they are playing it. the only bad is that it wasn’t handled the best way and it went public
and while I suspect that creative issues were the main cause for dropping JJ and even perhaps Emily, financial will lead them to look for a less known actress. although that does allow for some freshening up of the stories cause they can have a new rookie now that Reid is all grown up (even he can be a mentor figure which would be a nice twist)
and they have set up that relationships are frowned on so if something like that happens it will be done with some conflict etc which could be interesting.

Not happy at all and CBS this decision is disgracefull this show is more about the characters etc not the cases. Watch this show go up in flames like CSI:LV did when you got rid of pretty much the whole cast.

It’s not right fair at all!

  • Janey

Meh. I’m pretty much done with the show. They’ve really shown how much they care about the female characters.

It’s always some type of feminist issue with life-of-the-party, Janey.

I think it’s ridiculous that when CBS needed to trim the fact, they started with the women, instead of looking at Rossi. Joe is useless and the weakest actor in the bunch, especially when they have Hotch. I’m so glad they didn’t touch Garcia, but this is maddening.

At least they didn’t touch Garcia! She is one of the BEST!!! My mom likes Morgan, and I like Reid, but Rossi… I have no idea why they didn’t start with him… Why did they have to get rid of JJ? And why Prentiss? :(

I would like them to have a female equivalent of Hotch. I think it’s a bit maddening that there is never a woman that is the badas* one. Like Criminal Intent, the woman is relegated to sidekick role. A female Hotch is what we need.

maybe that’s what we will get. just because the actress is less known doesn’t mean she’s going to be some 20 year old.

I totally agree i was so upset when Prentiss and JJ left.
