Exclusive: Janeane Garofalo joins 'Criminal Minds' spin-off

janeane-garofaloImage Credit: Gilbert Carrasquillo/WireImage.comActress-comedienne-ex-CTU analyst Janeane Garofalo is nearing a deal to join CBS’ Criminal Minds spin-off, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The forthcoming offshoot, titled Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, stars Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as the leader of an elite team of agents within the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Garofalo will play one of those agents.

Garofalo became available after her fall pilot, an untitled medical drama from producer John Wells, failed to make it on the network’s fall lineup.

    NO CM SPIN-OFF!!!

    • Vicki

      Thank Heavens for Reruns!

      • Dwight K Schrute

She is the worst person in the world.

    • Cheery

So they fired AJ and Paget to pay her? Nothing personal against Janeane, but the spinoff blows and she’ll be out of a job soon enough.

      • Joe Jackson

Janeane does not cost much, less than either of the other two ladies.

      • Sophie

This is not CM. The spin-off is a separate show with it’s own budget. One has little to do with the other and nothing to do with each other’s budgets.

      • Sophie

You guys are so unaware of how TV shows are funded, what connects them, and how. AJ was not fired so that a totally different show with a completely separate budget could get Janeane Garofalo. Criminal Minds has been on for a long time and is, therefore, very expensive. While I’m very unhappy that they cut a terrific actress so they could get a cheaper one, you are putting events together that are not directly connected. They are, financially, separate entities.

DJ, this show is not produced by CBS studios…it’s actually produced by ABC, believe it or not.

      • SJS

I’m obviously a little behind the times — I didn’t realize that AJ and Pagent weren’t returning for another season. The reason this “team” works is because it is a “team”. Actors that work well together dance into each scene with highly effective results..I mean ratings. If they want a spin off, go do the spin-off, but leave Criminal Minds as it is — consistently in the top 10 each week for number of viewers. Nothing against Forest or Janeane’s ability to act; however, when CM combined forces with Forest’s entourage for the one episode, the show was ok, but hardly one that could be called remarkable as 99.9% of CM episodes are….and that’s my humble opinion :)

Between Wonky Whitaker and this chick, they are really working hard to build the most visually unappealing cast on TV huh?

      • sashay

That’s kind of shallow. The only reason I would consider watching the spin-off is the sheer talent of Forrest and Janeane. It’s the rest of the cast I have a problem with – they have absolutely no chemistry and the characters are dull, dull. By far the worst Criminal Minds episode so far is the two-parter used to introduce the spin-off cast. I prob. won’t watch it because the rest of the cast was so bad/badly written AND because I’m pissed AJ and Paget are being written out. But I wouldn’t blame Janeane and Forrest for that, just the producers/showrunner.

First off what a stupid name for a show Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior. Second off the spin off sucked before and still will with this addition

      • Melissa

while i agree it’s stupid, at least it’s better than “Minds 2″

    Who cares!

    who ‘s that girl?

    • nyangel22

i believe she was in The Truth About Cats and Dogs, but don’t quote me on that. I know she played the grown up Mabel in the Mad About You series finale.

      • sashay

Yeah she starred in that. Her other high profile role was in Reality Bites with Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller. Plus she played a recurring character in last season’s (not final) 24.

    • Michelle

That girl — is a moron…They just got her again saying stupid things on TV

    • richard

She was the lead techno ‘chick’ on 24 a couple seasons ago who always had it in for Chloe. Now the CM ‘franchise’ goes from 2 beautiful babe to one skanky chick. Guess Renee Zellweger with that ugly schnooze is a shoo-in for the CM spinoff with its inflated budget!

      • sashay

Who cares what they look like???!!! The best part of AJ and Paget was their solid portrayal of female FBI agents. I could believe in them. Can’t believe how many man here just focus on a woman’s looks. How would you like it if we only respected good-looking men? If I used that as my basis, the only men I cared about would be on True Blood. (Best-looking men on TV by a long shot. More importantly to me, they can ACT).

    • LOL

We need Janeane back doing political commentary.

      • topoopon

Or get her a good comedy where she can make fun of dumb people. A talk show, or a sitcom.

  • Nikko

CBS didn’t ‘have’ the $$$ to keep AJ Cook & Paget Brewster in Criminal Minds but they have the $$$ to hire Janeane Garofalo? Liars. Another reason not to watch this lame spin-off.

    • MaryJane

Totally agree. WTF!@% is wrong with them, are they crazy or something???!%%!$# Who gives a $#!T

    • Vicki

I agree 110%! No money to keep AJ? No money, have to cut back Paget’s air time? Where’d the money come from for this “spin-off”? Like Forest Whitaker but not enough to watch in a series, he’s a movie actor. Not “Criminal Minds” material!

      • josephrileyland

He’s not “Criminal Minds” material? Are you saying that CM is way below his level? If so, you’re right. I get the impression you’re saying something else, though, and if so, I take offense for Mr. Whitaker. So does his OSCAR.

    • Sophie

Two different series means two different budgets. Getting rid of AJ and gutting Paget down on CM has nothing to do with hiring Janeane on CM 2.0.

So if CHCH has budget cuts, that means Community will have more money to spend? Ridiculous!

      • B-

CBS Television Studios co-produces this show with The Mark Gordon Company. They also co-produce the original “Criminal Minds”. Sure two shows have set-separate budgets, but at the end of the day, the money comes from the same place. Also where did the revenue to kick start a spin off come from? This show and the other shows they produce. In penny pinching to eliminate a few good actors, they will alienate a lot of fans. Why risk that when they know the back end on a syndication deal for Minds will give the studio even more money for years to come? If anything, they should be moving eliminated cast members over. Not hiring new people.

      • sashay

I second B! You are being facetious when you make the jump from show producers to local broadcasters.

    • Jerry

      Well put.

    • Fabrisse

Such a terrible idea, the spinoff. The insult added to Cook’s and Brewster’s injury just makes it worse.

Nice try. Still not gonna watch.

  • Rob J. (ShutUpRob)

It’s not a zero-sum game. The money from the spin-off wouldn’t go to Criminal Minds if the spin-off weren’t picked up — the money would go *to another new show.*
    .
The only thing this is about is CBS ponying up the money for what A.J. and Paget are worth rather than nickel-and-diming them (in the latest example of a line of sexist behavior) to the detriment of the mothership show.
