Breaking: Starz cancels 'Party Down' and 'Gravity'

party-down-starzThis just in: Starz has pulled the plug on Party Down and Gravity.

The network’s executive vice president of programming, Stephan Shelanski, issued the following statement confirming the news: “After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons of Party Down and Gravity. We’re grateful to everyone involved in the shows, and are proud to have had them on the channel. Starz remains committed to aggressively expanding our original programming lineup.”

In its two seasons on the air, Party Down became a cult hit and a critical darling. But its ratings were terrible. And losing Adam Scott to Parks and Recreation (and Jane Lynch to Glee before him) certainly didn’t boost show’s future prospects. Still, its death is a huge bummer.

The same can’t be said for Gravity, which I’m pretty sure no one watched or liked. So let’s agree to use the comments section to mourn Party Down and only Party Down. K?

      • erni

You do know that Lizzy Caplan was on True blood, Right? for half a season :D

      • gb

Probably because True Blood is a megahit. But i am going to miss party down. Gravity was awful and morbid!

      • Partay

I liked Party Down. I guess a little too intellectual and not enough nudity and stupidity (TB).

    • caspery

there is a “web//site” named “black // white / Cupid” for dating or relationship, black or white singles can go there to find something sexy or beauty online !!!! ;)

      • ythu

This site sounds better than True Blood

      • minister

LOL ythu! It’s like True Blood w/ Cupids instead of vampires… and who knows, maybe one of the cupids could, you know, ACT.

In what world is canceling a show that draws under 80,000 viewers a “bad programming decision”?

    • Xander

Yes, it is. Party Down was special. Low ratings, yes, but I found it late in the second season and watched them all! I wish it would get a third. It was a great show. About the idiots who made Gravity … when, in the first episode, a bird pooped on a guys face and he rubbed it in as a ‘cream’, I knew that show was garbage. You have to be grounded in reality. People generally aren’t happy to be ‘birded’ upon. It amazes me that people who are not talented get green-lit to make absolute garbage. It says something negative about STARZ execs that they allowed Gravity to se the light of day. And it says a lot about them that they are canceling a great show like PARTY DOWN that still might have risen above a ‘cult following’.

That’s odd I didn’t know Jane Lynch’s last name was Lunch. Hmmm.

      • true blood gets about 60x the ratings that party down did (4.5 million to 74,000) with incredible DVD sales. no way they’ll cancel it because ythu on ew.com dislikes it.

True Blood appeals to intelligent people that like to be entertained. Hence, it could not possibly interest morons like YTHU and Minister.

    • lorna

poor rob thomas. as a VM fan i was hoping to start watching party down.

  • Jason

Not cool. Need my Lizzy Caplan/Krysten Ritter fix.

goddamn it…i love party down… why do good shows get the axe and crappy procedurals on CBS run for 10 years

    • Barry

Because they are better than this trash.

      • Pete

        Go f*ck yourself

      • Vikki Sixx

Barry, hardly. You obviously have an extremely short term memory. Those procedurals are all carbon copies of each other with mediocre acting at best and rehashed storylines year after year. Party Down was the most refreshing and funniest comedy on television.

    • Tego Livi

My question is, why do people find it impossible to mourn their favorites without trashing some other show? Only 1 procedural has run on CBS for 10 years, and it’s a good show.

      • Will

Thank you! I hate these message boards because all it is are people trashing other shows.

      • Ashley

Because they have nothing better to do. So they come pick fights with random strangers. How’s that for fun times?

Meanwhile, I’m trying hard to remember wth Gravity was anyway…Off to google.

  • Kelsey

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Why! I lament the loss of Party Down! That is so sad! At least they had 2 excellent seasons of tv, and I am happy how they ended it. But still. So sad!

    • minister

Season two (despite being better than any comedy since Arrested Development) wasn’t as good as Season One, but O My GOD “My Struggle” was fucking HILARIOUS.

      • Dan

I totally agree. I only discovered this show a month ago on Netflix and as of 2 days ago I was showing it to every single person I knew. Then, Starz took it off.I can’t imagine that its costing the show money to have it on Netflix, right? So does anyone know what the hell they were thinking/where to find episodes now?

Been nice knowing you Starz. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out of my cable box…

    • Dave

Agreed, the only reason I ever think about Starz is because of Party Down, loved it.
