'Friday Night Lights' exclusive: Zach Gilford returns!

friday-night-lightsImage Credit: Bill Records/NBCWith Emmy buzz swirling around him like mosquitoes on a Texas football field, Zach Gilford has inked a deal to return to Friday Night Lights for a sizeable arc during the show’s fifth and likely final season. The news comes as the actor is enjoying the best reviews of his career for an episode in which his character, Matt, mourned the death of his father. The tear-jerking hour first drew attention last fall when it aired on DirectTV, but it was an encore telecast on NBC earlier this month that lit up Twitter and led fans to start a Facebook campaign aimed at getting him a much-deserved Emmy nod (in the guest actor category.) What does Gilford think of all the attention? And what brings Matt back to Dillon? The actor rang me with the 411 as he was about to hop a plane to Austin to film his first of four FNL episodes. Old Spice man books NBC talent deal

Categories: Casting, Deals, Television, TV Biz

old-spice-man-isaiah--mustafaPeddling men’s cologne on top of a horse has been very good for Isaiah Mustafa. The star of the memorable Old Spice commercials has closed a talent deal with NBC, which hopes to add him him to one of the network’s current or new series, Variety reports.

Mustafa’s previous credits include small parts in shows like NCIS, Ugly Betty, and Castle before he booked the Old Spice ads — one of which aired during the Super Bowl. The actor told EW earlier this year that the high-profile spot ended up having a big impact on how he was perceived in Hollywood. “What’s funny is no one knew me as being funny before,” Mustafa told EW’s Kate Ward. “Because the only things I had done were these episodics and procedurals where I was kind of this tough guy, prison guard, cop, or FBI guy. So now, people are like, ‘Oh, he’s funny.’ That commercial … really helped me to climb that ladder of success.”

The commercial also invited an unexpected level of awareness from the public. “People in the industry recognize me. Other actors recognize me at auditions. [A TSA agent] at the airport said, ‘Are you that guy on the commercial? I saw you on the TV last night!’ I was kind of like, ‘You’re asking me questions? Shouldn’t you be, like, checking for bombs?’”

Mustafa told Variety that he just shot another Old Spice commercial, which is set to air in the coming months.

'Glee': Should it compete for an Emmy as a comedy?

Categories: Emmy Awards, Emmys, Glee

jane-lynchImage Credit: Michael Yarish/FoxEven though it has tackled such heavy topics as homophobia and teen pregnancy, Glee will follow in the footsteps of one-hour series Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty by vying for Outstanding Comedy at the Emmys. Eleven years after Ally McBeal became the first dramedy to score a win in the category, Glee is considered a lock to earn a nomination July 8, and it may well win the trophy Aug. 29. But comedy purists are asking: Do hour-long shows — which mix lighthearted moments with full-on tearjerkers — really belong in a category that usually honors traditional sitcoms? A handful of comedy writers polled by EW have their doubts.

“We bust our asses trying to get as many laughs into the shows as possible,” gripes one veteran scribe. “Dramedies don’t do that.” Adds another: “I’ve seen Glee a couple times, and I like it okay. But it has never, not even once, made me laugh, which seems like something any comedy should do.” Still, that writer points out, “I don’t know that a show like Glee should be competing against, say, The Wire, either.”

The Emmy brass recognizes the issue, but is understandably reluctant to create a new award for dramedies. “To [add] another category just to take care of the odd ducks would dilute the meaning of each one,” says John Leverence, the academy’s senior VP of awards. Still, the pressure is on Glee to submit comedic episodes that can go toe-to-toe with three-time winner 30 Rock and this year’s breakout, Modern Family. (Glee plans to offer its pilot and the Madonna episode for consideration.) But other than the musical numbers, creator Ryan Murphy argues, Glee isn’t that different. “People get caught up on that ‘dramedy’ label. But every time I watch 30 Rock or Modern Family, I am moved,” he says. “The more heart that a show has, the bigger laugh you get in the payoff. All in the Family had a rape episode. Just because it’s a sitcom doesn’t mean it’s not moving. And just because it’s a one-hour [show] doesn’t mean it’s not funny.”

Glee aired its first season finale on Tuesday; it averaged nearly 11 million viewers. The episode was the highest-rated season finale for all freshman series this year.
