Scott Patterson on 'Gilmore Girls' reunion movie: 'It probably will happen'

ausiello-tour-graham-patterson-altImage Credit: Patrick Ecclesine/The WBJust as the buzz surrounding a Gilmore Girls reunion project starts dying down, something happens to reawaken the beast. In this case, it’s the interview I conducted last night with the show’s former leading man Scott Patterson. While our conversation was initially focused on his role in NBC’s new serial thriller The Event, it quickly shifted into Gilmore territory. In my defense, I did have the world’s perfect segue: Patterson’s Event son-in-law is none other than ex-Parenthood star Jason Ritter, whose May-December romance with Patterson’s ex-Gilmore love Lauren Graham was one of the high points of the show’s stellar first season… READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive 'Chuck' video: Spoilers, silliness, and a surprise birthday serenade!

ausiello-tour-chuck-leviDespite the fact that we just chatted six days ago at Comic-Con, Chuck‘s Zachary Levi and I still had plenty to discuss at NBC’s press tour soiree last night. First up: Scoop on Old Spice hunk Isaiah Mustafa’s guest appearance in episode 2. And be sure to stick around for part 2 of the video with the rest of Chuck‘s wacky ensemble. The final 30 seconds are particularly magical, if I do say so myself. (Hint: Yesterday was Yvonne Strahovski’s birthday.) READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Fox will take time naming new judges

American Idol fans will have to wait a little longer to find out how Fox plans to replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres as judges for the show’s 10th season. Though rumors about replacements hit a fever pitch on Friday – including one about how Jennifer Lopez had nabbed a seat on the panel – word is that Fox execs plan to stay mum Monday when they meet with reporters at the Television Critics Tour in Beverly Hills. In fact, a source close to the show insists that no deals have been signed with any new panelists.

Instead, Fox will just use the critics tour session to (perish the thought!) promote new fall series like Lonestar and Raising Hope. Stay tuned.

Press Tour Roundup: Ten things I learned during NBC's big day

Categories: Press Tour 2010, Scoop

tca-nbc-smitsImage Credit: Michael Caulfield/Getty Images; Fox* NBC’s promising serial thriller The Event—which features multiple, interconnecting timelines, stories, and mysteries—will not succumb to FlashForwarditis. “You have to go on faith that we know what we’re doing,” said the show’s creator Nick Wauters. “We will reveal as many answers as we can and set up more mysteries.”

* The two leads on J.J. Abrams’ new spy romp Undercovers are black. And that’s a pretty big deal, dammit! Showrunner Josh Reims acknowledged as much, although he insisted he did not set out to “revolutionize TV” when he cast Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. READ FULL STORY »

'The Event': NBC exec says it won't be a repeat of 'FlashForward'

Categories:

eventImage Credit: Dean Hendler/NBCNBC execs today attempted to shoot down any skepticism over whether NBC’s new drama The Event will leave viewers more confused than satisfied. Considering what happened last year with high-concept shows like ABC’s short-lived drama FlashForward, “we are going to do everything in our power to guard against (what happened with) Flashforward,” NBC entertainment topper Angela Bromstad told TV journalists today in Beverly Hills. “That show had a great script, a really good pilot and we were afraid of it competitively. I understand it did disappoint the audience. We take those lessons really seriously. The audience and critics will be rightly skeptical.

“If we can get this show right, even though the risks are tremendous, the rewards are really great,” Bromstad continued. READ FULL STORY »

Former ABC Family exec Paul Lee named ABC's new entertainment president

Categories: TV Biz

ABC announced today that former ABC Family President Paul Lee will become the new President of the ABC Entertainment Group, effective immediately. Lee will oversee the network’s primetime lineup and its sister company, ABC Studios. “Paul was hired six years ago because of his great creative instincts and his ability to identify an audience and develop programming that resonates with them, and those same strengths are why he was tapped for this new responsibility,” according to a statement from Disney co-chair Anne Sweeney. “Paul’s success at ABC Family is as amazing as it is indisputable, and I’m looking forward to his continued success on ABC.”

Lee joined ABC Family in 2004 and helped to turn the network around as an attractive destination for young women, thanks to programs like Kyle XY, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Pretty Little Liars, Greek, Make It or Break It and Huge. ABC Family is in top five of all cable networks in primetime among  women 18-49, women 18-34, and females 12-34.

Lee replaces Steve McPherson, who announced his decision to resign from the company earlier this week.

'Law & Order' is officially...gone, says Dick Wolf

Categories:

law-and-orderImage Credit: Virginia Sherwood/NBCSorry Law & Order fans; the long-running drama will not end up on another network now that NBC has passed on ordering a 21st season. Executive Producer Dick Wolf told the nation’s TV critics today in Beverly Hills that the show is officially dead and his focus will now be on launching Law & Order: Los Angeles on NBC this fall.

“I will confirm that it has moved to the  history books,” Wolf told reporters. “We’re extremely disappointed, but that’s business, that’s life. Every (show) is born under a death sentence. They just don’t tell you the date of execution.”

NBC also announced today that Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow) and Corey Stoll (Salt) will join the cast of the spinoff, which will premiere Sept. 29. Howard will play a district attorney, as will Alfred Molina (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). Stoll will play a detective and partner with Skeet Ulrich (Jericho).
