Shocker: NBC bumps 'Love Bites' to midseason, moves 'Apprentice' to Thursdays

love-bites-becki-spiroRuh-roh. NBC is already tinkering with its fall schedule, bumping the comedy Love Bites to midseason and replacing it in the Thursday-at-10 slot with a regular, noncelebrity edition of The Apprentice.

How come?

Bites has been dealt two big setbacks — one happy, the other not so much: Leading lady Becki Newton is pregnant with her first child (congrats!)…and showrunner Cindy Chupack has stepped down for personal reasons (drat).

“Launching an anthology series, which breaks the form in so many ways, is a huge undertaking, and I strongly feel that I can be most helpful not showrunning, but writing,” said Chupack in a statement. “It just became clear that for several reasons, some of them personal, this change (and a little more time) is what we need to launch this show properly.”

Additionally, the Peacock is now confirming my scoop from last week that Jordana Spiro is out due to her ongoing commitment to My Boys. There are no plans at present to recast her role of Frannie.

NBC’s scheduling guru Mitch Metcalf says the decision to hand the plum Thursday-at-10 p.m. slot to The Apprentice was “the simplest option,” adding that the show “was well along into production and will be able to join the [fall lineup] without missing a beat.”

Thoughts? You know where to stick ‘em!

    • Debs

      I second that idea

    • Liz

I third it! I was actually thinking about Mercy this morning on the bus.

    • LOL

      NBC is a train wreck.

      • nikkido

        H*ll yes. Bring back Mercy.

Mercy back? Are you guys kidding? it is boring and poor acting. it would fir on daytime with the soaps.
Bring back Trama if you want a medical show

    • LOL

      NBC is a train wreck.

        H*ll yes. Bring back Mercy.

  • Josie

So what about Perfect Couples and Kyle Howard?

    • James

NBC placed it on a late night slot because of its content, don’t know how they’re going to make it fit in as a 10pm show

  • mary q contrary

Yet another misstep. What the hell are they smoking over there, and how do you get ahold of some? I’d like to pull a Jeremy London on the morons over at MTV.

    • Nicole

Same. Well, now NBC can be completely ignored on Thursdays at 10 – I can’t stomach The Apprentice. Maybe if they had used the opportunity to move Chuck out of the deadly Monday at 8 slot…

First the horribly racist and unfunny looking “Outsourced” gets added to the lineup, then they pull “Parks and Rec” till midseason, now this. Oh, NBC…

      • @NoMentionofKev

If they follow the movie, which it sounds like they are, then ‘Outsourced’ is about as far from racist as you can get. Watch the movie before making stupid statements like that.

      • Carm

I watched the extended trailer of the show a few weeks ago. It was not funny at all, but also not racist.

      • Wil

@ @NoMentionof Kev: Well, the movie is probably much better than what I’ve seen. I watched some of the previews waiting for it to be funny, but it was just awkward. There was only one really funny thing (the accent changing people or something) other than that it was clumsy and looked horrible compared to the show that it replaced (Parks & Rec). And unless you’ve seen the show itself and can give an actual claim that the show is like the movie in all or many ways from actual experience, your comment is more “stupid” than the one you responded to.

  • Kate

Well, generally by that point in time I am watching my DVR, at about ten, usually just starting Vampire Diaries.

  • Kate

Oh, and Kyle Howard, wouldn probably have the same issue as Jordan Spiro..ongoing commitment to My Boys?

  • jacob

    GRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNBEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRG!

  • amanders

    put parksnrec back this fall!

    • Jenn

^ That’s exactly what I was going to say. If “Outsourced” is a success, I will eat my hat.

      • Yes

I’m with you Jenn. I just don’t see it going over well. So yes – bring back Parks & Rec! It deserves to be on the fall schedule more than a lot of other shows.

      • rebecca

Does Amy Pohler have the same scheduling problem as Becki Newton? And by scheduling problem, I mean giant bun in the oven?

  • Matt2

Well I guess if you have to add filler programming to your fall timeslot, better the 10pm timeslot than the 8pm hour. No way NBC contends with the other networks on Thursdays this fall. Their comedy lineup is anemic, filled with shockingly unfunny material and now they have to finish out the night with a dead show that’s already been cancelled once. They might as well put Last Comic Standing in that slot. They’d get the same results. Here’s to holding up a giant “L” and staring at the NBC brainiacs.

    • Dave

NBC Thursday comedy lineup anemic and unfunny? Better get that head injury checked out, Matt!

  • Geo

If I wanted to watch “The Apprentice,” I’d still be watching HGTV’s “Design Star” this season. They’re now the same show.

  • Ugly Jenny

I hope that they put back Jordana Spiro back in now that they’re pushing back the show! I love My Boys, but would love to see her and Kyle on network primetime.

    • Yeah

This was my first thought, too. I hope will mean she’s free to be on it again by the time they start.

  • Ricardo

Hell yes! i love becki but that was the perfect time for NBC to give Mercy a second chance…it was a great show, with a great cast with an awesome chemistry…so why not? I guess i’ll have to see Donald’s old wig again!!

    • SilentRage

Mercy got terrible ratings, it was canceled weeks before the final episode and they only showed that much because of the Leno fiasco.

  • Topher

This is good at least in the sense that the show will probably be able to keep it’s leads AND be written well.
