'The Young and the Restless': Sean Young extends her stay

sean-youngImage Credit: Rick Stephens/PR PhotosSean Young is extending her stay on The Young and the Restless as the barmaid Meggie who attempted to pick up on Victor, EW has learned exclusively. Young — who already appeared in five episodes of Y&R – will return July 14 and is expected to stick around through August.

Before joining the sudser in May, Young said this of her daytime debut: “Getting the chance to work with my dear friend Eric Braeden, one of the true gentlemen in entertainment, was certainly a deciding factor for me, as well as wanting to get back to work after taking a few years off to raise my kids.” Young and Braeden previously worked together on the Civil War drama The Man Who Came Back in 2007.

Young’s decision to stay in Genoa City underscores a promising trend in daytime dramas: A slew of celebs have booked gigs on the soaps ever since James Franco (Pineapple Express) star began moonlighting on General Hospital last November (he’s back on the show through August as a bad boy performing artist named Franco). Julianne Moore (As the World Turns), Michael Nouri (All My Children), and Vanessa Marcil (GH) all announced sudser stints this year, as did David Hasselhoff and Eric Roberts on The Young and the Restless.

“It’s a refreshing change,” Roberts tells EW exclusively about his two-month run starting July 12. “There’s a misconception that an actor who’s been nominated for an Oscar has his pick of roles. Not true. I finally decided to go where I was wanted. The other refreshing change is this role Y&R gave me to play. He’s actually got living brain cells! I play a smart, very well-educated guy. Can’t say if he’s a bad guy or a good guy, cause I’m giving nothing away… But what I love about it is that he’s a different character from most of the characters you’re used to seeing me play. The writing’s great, as is the cast.”

    Rise, B-Listers! Riiiise!

  • Rob

Wow she looks old. I don’t mean that in a mean or derogatory way, so don’t jump all over me. I guess I just haven’t seen her in a long time. I still just think of No Way Out when I hear her name.

    • EMcG

I was thinking the same thing…

    • jules

      yeah…she looks awful.

  • steve

I guess since THE LOVEBOAT and MURDER, SHE WROTE ARE not around anymore, these B-Listers are now flocking to daytime; sadly, it’s days are numbered also.

    Dear Steve

Hey Honey ….it will happen to you sweetie, if it hasn’t already.
Sad. In Europe, Sean would be a hottie.

  • Rion

    Dammit…She’s awful.

“after taking a few years off to raise my kids.” Um, If recall correctly, nobody in Hollywood would give you the time of day. You alienated yourself in such a way

“There’s a misconception that an actor who’s been nominated for an Oscar has his pick of roles. Not true.”

They do. They do have their pick of roles, provided they maintain a consistent string of popular hits alongside the critically acclaimed roles. You think Angelina doesn’t have her pick of roles? Or Meryl Streep? Or Tom Hanks? Of course they do, but Roberts doesn’t because first, his sole Oscar nominations was how many years ago? And secondly, his career became a string of cheap B films…

And Charles Shaughnessy (“The Nanny”) recently returned to “Days of Our Lives,” but I don’t know how long he’ll be sticking around. I know that he never became a HUGE star, but “The Nanny” was a hit sitcom that is still playing in reruns just about everywhere.

You forgot about the other Swayze – Don Swayze – Patrick’s lil bro, who was also on Y&R with Sean Young in June.

  • Brian

I can remember Sean Young early on when she appeared in Stripes although it seems that almost everyone doesn’t remember that.

    • Barb

And who could forget “Ace Ventura-Pet Detective”???

    • GregR

      and Blade Runner.

  • jocephus

Jon Dekerley said exactly what I was thinking.

“Getting the chance to work with my dear friend Eric Braeden, one of the true gentlemen in entertainment, was certainly a deciding factor for me.

Talk about some major a$$ kissing.

    • GregR

Victor Newman happens to be the most powerful man in Genoa City.

I always thought she got a bad rap. Sure, she brought some of it on herself, but we’ve seen much worse behavior than that since then, and those actors still work in big projects. She was supposed to be in Batman but broke her collar bone, so she thought it only right she at least be allowed to audition for Catwoman, makes sense to me. Her antics seemed loopy at the time, but like I said, I’ve seen much worse since then, and from far less talented people. I wish Sean Young nothing but the best!

I always liked her, maybe because I’ve always been a little wild myself. I thought she was great in A Kiss Before Dying. I think she would have been a great Wonder Woman circa the late 80′s to mid 90′s. I can’t argue with the casting of Michelle Pheiffer in Batman Returns, she was a great Catwoman. But Tim Burton probably should have at least diffused the situation and let Sean audition. That’s not a great picture of her, I’ve seen others where she still looks really pretty.

    • Ixarix

I also liked her in Blade Runner, which is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Her career has definitely been a little sleepy over the years and she may have had some personal issues to deal with, but well, it nice to see that she is trying to move forward.

  • Terry

Didn’t her career go down the toilet in the ’90s because she was a nutcase who didn’t know when to keep her mouth shut?
