Scoop: Is the end near for 'Brothers & Sisters'?

brothers-and-sistersImage Credit: Miranda Penn Turin/ABCIs the Walker family about to sit down to their last supper? ABC’s decision to commit to only 18 episodes of Brothers & Sisters combined with the exits of longtime cast members Rob Lowe and Emily VanCamp has fueled speculation that the show’s fifth season may well be its last. However, exec producer David Marshall Grant insists the plug has not been pulled — at least not yet.

“No one has told me that it’s the last season,” maintains Grant. As a result, the scribe isn’t approaching the season as a bookend to the series. “I don’t want to do that. It’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

If anything, Grant is hoping the decision to leap forward one year will add years to the show’s life span. “I’m actually looking at this season as a fresh beginning,” he says. “That’s one of the things you can do when you jump a year. I want to put [our characters] in fresh and different places, and hopefully that will have legs.”

What do you think? Should ABC set an end date for B&S — and should that date fall within the 2010-11 season? Sound off below!

True Blood is getting so much wierder I can hardly stand to watch it, too much blood on their faces for too long – yuk. It is hard to understand the show, all these werewolves and vampires. I think I’ll give it up soon.

Please don’t end Brothers & Sisters…I love it. Good show.

  • Tommy

I enjoyed the latest season especially towards the end. And I do think the time jump can only help. In my opinion Rob and Emily’s characters had run their course and nothing new could be done with them.

You two need your own sitcom. I would watch it.

I like the idea of considering this one-year leap forward a reboot of the show. It’s always been pretty stale and predictable, so anything to spice it up is good news. I’m really sad that Emily is leaving, but her storyline was a thankless one. I enjoy the rest of the cast and it’s a nice fit with the frothier Desperate Housewives. I don’t think it’s necessary to set an end date. Not just yet, anyway.

The show needs to end. It is so past its prime and I don’t see much of anything restarting its quality or ratings at this point.

      Amen.

Never the end never… B&S should be like a daytime soap and last forever. I can’t see what can replace it, this show is outstanding and a success in and out the US, Sally field is just outstanding. The upcoming challenges of a gay parenthood, a widow running for office, a poz uncle… So many stories yet to unfold. Do not kill it!

This show is going down. If it wasn’t for Sarah, Kevin, and Justin, there really would be no reason to watch. There’s no compelling storylines really. I think they should set an end date.

    • KC

I just adore Kevin and Justin.

      • KC

        I think I meant Scottie….
        short term memory loss…

How is this a scoop? All you’ve done is draw your own conclusion on a piece of news that came out weeks and weeks ago with the reduced episode order and the departure of a couple of its cast.
    Desperate for news?

    • Ceballos

What can you say? It’s summer and he’s scratching and clawing for material.

(See the overused “My Boys” joke in last week’s AA.)

    • Andrew

      Rachel plays Sarah…

      • Erin

Andrew, she played the awesome Brenda in SFU.

How I miss SFU. I like Sarah, but like Brian, she’ll always be ‘Brenda’ to me.

  • graeme

Dang, Flockhart looks great in that picture.

I don’t think the show has played out, but I do think the last few episodes of this season really painfully drew plotlines out, but I’m hopefully the new storylines will help things.
