Image Credit: Danny Feld/TNTGood news for TNT’s promising new drama Men of a Certain Age: Though the network only aired 10 episodes of the series about three middle-aged men living in Los Angeles, it was enough to convince Emmy voters to nominate co-star Andre Braugher in the supporting actor category. Braugher plays Owen Thoreau Jr., the schlubby manager of a car dealership that’s owned by his overbearing father (Richard Gant).
“I was looking for a new challenge,” Braugher says of the series created by Everybody Loves Raymond’s Ray Romano and Mike Royce. “The last thing I wanted to do these days was pick up a gun or blow something up or talk tough. I’ve already done a lot of that. I wanted to do something fun. Even though they call it a drama, it’s a funny show. Ray is an excellent writer as well as a comedian. He’s plumbing new depths here.
“I imagined from the very beginning that we’d get a middle age audience because we are telling the story of their lives – something they would relate to right away,” continues Braugher. “Not a lot of happens. It’s similar to Seinfeld [in] that it has a tendency to be a show about nothing. But it really stands up because Mike and Ray are truthful writers. It’s really it’s about how people relate to each other and how they get out of these hijinks.”
Men also stars Romano and Scott Bakula. TNT increased the second season order to 12 episodes, which will begin airing in November. In its first season, Men averaged 4.2 million viewers and frequently dominated its Monday timeslot among viewers and adults 25-54 compared to other ad-supported cable shows.
TNT earned three Emmy nominations today, including an Outstanding Lead Actress nod for Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).

Absolutely love this show, and loved seeing Braugher play such a different kind of character too. Here’s hoping it does a bit better in the ratings next time and gets to stick around awhile…
I love him and love the show! All characters are great on it but he is the best part of the show for sure! Well deserved nod!
I have been so worried that this show was DOA. The news about the 2nd season is as welcome as the Emmy nod. It should be the law that Braugher is ALWAYS in a weekly series just to remind people what talent actually is.
This is a great thing for Andre and the show. I like it very much. So happy to see TV writing has come such a long way. Not too long ago black men were portrayed as pimps, killers and rappers. Owen could be any man or (Everyman). That is the beauty of the whole thing.
Great!! I loved this show, and he was my favorite character.
He’s been one of the best actors on TV over the past two decades, and he’s typically excellent on “Men.”
VERY happy to see the show get some recognition.
I am so thrilled that he got a nomination for his brilliant performance in “Men of a Certain Age”. It’s definitely the best drama on cable!
He’s so great in everything he does. He’s definately one of my faves!
I’ve been ‘addicted’ to all things Andre Braugher since Homicide: Life on the Street. He’s the reason I tuned in to this show, but all three leads are terrific. I can’t wait for its return.
He’s also been a great guest actor on House this year.
This show deserved way more Emmy nods than just the one for Andre…. writing, directing, music, not to mention the marvelous cast. Ray Romano is much more than a sitcom comedian!
Great show with wonderful characters…and Braugher’s character is the most interesting and relatable, imo. He well deserves this emmy nomination.
Love this show and all of the actors. So glad it got some Emmy love!
