Snappy Judgments: 2010 Emmy Nominations

emmy-nomination-reactImage Credit: FX; Justin Stephens/NBC (2); Mitchell Haaseth/NBC (2)I’m Super-Ecstatic About:
* The nods for Friday Night Lights‘ long-overdue leads, Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.
* Parks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler being up for lead actress.
* Glee standout Chris Colfer sneaking into the supporting-actor race. Ditto his awesome TV dad, Mike O’Malley (for guest actor).
* Elizabeth Mitchell snagging a guest-actress nod for Lost. Ditto Matthew Fox (for lead actor).
* All the Modern Family love.
* Jim Parsons’ second consecutive nod for The Big Bang Theory.
* The Good Wife‘s rockin’ female trio (Julianna Margulies, Archie Panjabi, and Christine Baranski) all making the cut.
* Burn Notice breaking through via a nod for Sharon Gless.

I’m Rolling My Eyes About:
* Two words: Tony Shalhoub.
* Two more words: Jon Cryer.

I’m Super-Pissed About:
* Emmy recognizing the entire Modern family except Ed O’Neill.
* No best-drama nod for Friday Night Lights. Voters also neglected to recognize season 4 MVP Zach Gilford.
* Emmy flunking Community.
* No love for Chuck.
* Timothy Olyphant’s unJustified snub.
* The absence of Fringe‘s John Noble.
* Cougar Town getting bubkes.
* Ugly Betty‘s stellar final season going unnoticed.
* House‘s Lisa Edelstein getting overlooked yet again.
* Sons of Anarchy’s Katey Sagal getting screwed.
* Diddlysquat for Spartacus: Blood and Sand and star Andy Whitfield.

Okay, that’s my two cents’ worth. Now it’s your turn. Post your own snappy judgments below.

Super disappointed about yet another Courteney Cox snub.

    • ythu

Yea for True Blood best show ever!

      • swaggy

        How was Michelled Forbes overlooked???

      • paige

agreed about Michelle Forbes- no other actress devoured her scenes with such relish as Michelle Forbes did.

      • Pisces228

Michelle Forbes really badmouthed the Emmys last year. That could explain her snub.

      • koker

she’s cool , but for me and my friends (and some of their friends that i’ve talked to), she is actually way cooler then her role. speaking on behalf of us, roughly 7, last two episodes were somewhat of a let down after the Godric arc which was pretty amazing for all of us

      • Joel

I’m as a big a TRUE BLOOD fan as there is but this show succeeds only as an ensemble piece. None of the individual acting or writing is exceptional. That said, I do think Michelle stood out, as she became “a reason to watch” while everyone else (perhaps except Eric and the fantastic Jessica) just became tiresome and, in Sookie’s case, annoying. I still watch, but indeed Season 3 is already a bit dull. Werewolves need a storyline, and Sofie needing cash is not much of one.

    • paige

ooooh Major Courteney Cox snub! i’m super pissed about the Vanessa Williams snub

      • Lorie

        I agree on both counts!

      • aleksa

I figured Vanessa Williams was a lock. Very surprised about that one.

      • Karen

Vanessa totally deserved a nom!!! Come on people!!!!!!!!!!!

      • koker

disappointed over no Courtney. She is amazing

      • kris

Anyone who think Community is an Emmy-worthy show is a total moron.

      • kris

Anyone who thinks Community is an Emmy-worthy show is a total moron.

    • ChitoJoseph

Arrrgh! Cougar Town being snubbed is a travesty! Who doesn’t like the quick comedy, and Courteney Cox’s impeccable comedic timing (and superb body)?

      • bruno

it kind of sucks people. i can’t egt past cox’s new face…

      • cameobrooch

This was a year in which several high-profile comedies debuted, so it’s not surprising that Cougar Town and Community were overlooked. Plus, the Emmy committee tends to nominate the same people year after year Tony Shaloub, which makes it that much harder for a new show to get some recognition.

      • Jill

I stopped watching after a few eps. It was horrible…and CC was the worst thing about it.

      • Juneau

Agree with Jill. I watched the first 4 episodes and just thought it was terrible. I’m so distracted by Courtney Cox’s facial tightness that I could never get involved. Oh and it’s not funny.

      • Steve from Canada

        Agree with Jill and Juneau.
Not funny, boring, stupid storylines, overacting (Busy Philips) but some supporting cast moments were funny (Ian Gomez, the kid).

    • Alan

Me too. After 10 straight snubs for playing Monica on Friends, I thought for sure this was her year. Why do the Emmys hate this woman????

    • LOL

I thought Monk went off the air about 3 years ago.

      • Dan

nope, it ended just last year, and I don’t know why ausiello is rolling his eyes, Shalhoub did a great job through Monk’s entire run

      • Ashleigh

@Dan: He was competent and consistent, but that’s it. Stellar turns by other more deserving actors were repeatedly shunted aside in order to make room for his permanent lock on a nomination.

      • jennrae

I like Tony Shalhoub as Monk, but Tony Shalhoub as Tony Shalhoub is kind of a douche.

    • HD

Courtney not only deserved a nomination she honesttly deserved the win, too.

    • Scooptress

Super disappointed at yet another twit thinking Courtney Cox is even close to a good enough actress to EVER be considered having been “snubbed” of ANYTHING.

      • Jesse

She put in one of the best performances on Friends (I’d argue second best to Lisa Kudrow) only to be sole actor from her cast denied a nod. And she has been very funny in Cougar Town, converting what at times could be lame material into genuine comedy. However, I’m more excited that Connie Britton finally got a nomination than I am disappointed that Cox yet again didn’t! Only wish the Academy would stop fawning over Tony Shalhoub and Jon Crier so undeservedly and pathetically.

      • morgan

Let me guess…you think Lea Michelle deserved her nomination. Please…Courteney is way overdue.

  • overfreakinwhelmed

seriously, Steve Carrell and Two and a half men’s time has come and gone!! Where is Community and its cast??? New blood and better funny COME ON!!!

    • Javi

That’s what I hate the most about this award shows, they get stuck with the same shows year after year, and they never consider the new AND BETTER shows… COMMUNITY!!!!!!

      • Dave

I think Community got the shaft too, but you can’t complain this year that they ignored new shows when Glee and Modern Family pulled so many nominations.

      • Steve from Canada

Community is just okay most of the time with a few good episodes and some good moments within average episodes. I judge a show on whether I watch intently or get distracted and wander (and whether I record a show and never watch it live or just watch it live). Community is a show I watch live and often get distracted and wander. Love Abed, though. His film-making episode was great.

    • Annabelle

Agreed about Two & a Half Men. I never saw how the show was funny to begin with, let along continuing to nominate it year after year.

      • swaggy

I think Charlie Sheen’s off screen antics cost him a nod.

    • dida

I agree…same goes for Julia Louis-Dreyfus getting nominated again for the New Adventures of Old Christine…enough already!

      • thin

No, this one is still completely deserved. I agree completely about Jon Cryer and Steve Carrell, but I can’t get on board with disliking Julia Louis-Dreyfus getting another nomination.

      • Seanti

Except that JLD actually deserved a nom, since she’s hysterical… and it was the least voters could do to recognize her, since the show was so unceremoniously dumped at the last minute (and ABC offered, then faired to materialize, a life preserver).

    • LOL

      Conan’s Tonight Show nominated! Awesome!

      • amanda

        coco love!!

      • Karin

CoCo was never all that funny!!

      • I’m with Coco

Coco rules! Leno sucks! I wonder how ironic it would be for Coco’s Tonight Show winning the big one during the Emmy telecast on NBC (of all places). The acceptance speech from Coco would be something to look forward to. Emmy voters make it so, please?

  • nic

John Noble passed over. SHAME EMMYS SHAME.

    • Brady

The Emmys just can’t handle anything science fiction. First, they snub Battlestar Galactica (which was the best show on TV at the time) and now they snub John Noble who deserved a nomination last year and deserved the trophy this year. Just another example of how the Emmy Awards are so ridiculously prejudiced. It’s why I stopped caring about them.

      • Not exactly true

There was much Emmy love for the X-Files several years back with Gillian Armstrong (Scully) winning Best Lead Actress.

      • Steve from Canada

        @Not exactly True.

        It’s Gillian Anderson.

    • ChitoJoseph

John Noble as Walter Bishop = Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester.

It should have been a hands-down win! :(

      • Steve from Canada

Agreed about John Noble. The actor does a superb job with a great character.

    • idgie

Lots of dissapointments, John Noble is stellar as Walter and to add to his already superb performance, he also plays a polar opposite, alternate universe Walter. Grey’s Anatomy’s Chandra Levy was superb as usual, in a vastly improved show this season… after 2 seasons of mostly dud episodes and storylines. Nurse Jackie getting a best drama nod over companion show Tara was undeserved. This year I felt Jackie slipped with that stupid and endless husband/boyfriend bromance story line. Athough the actress that plays Chloe deserved a nomination for stealing every scene she was in and that is not an easy feat when your are acting with Falco.(My apologies for forgetting the name of the actress. On the other hand Tara improved on every level and the brillant Toni Collette improved on perfection. Other shows not deserving a nomination; Breaking Bad really was utterly stupid and oring with the antics of Walt tormenting his wife to take him back. Athought I do not agree with her lack of true understanding, about what intially drove him to his new “business venture”. Although I acknowledge he is not the same man he once was and his motives are different. Really a pizza on the roof and sneaking back home and then not leaving) I do believe it bounced back, after the shooting of Hank and the corresponding storylines. How about the ever passed over performances of the leads “In Plain Sight” especially that of McCormick’s deeply damged and haunted Mary. Plus let’s not forget the wonderful and underrated Leslie Ann Warren as Mary’s recovering mom. Last but not least how did the the boys who play wise old soul Manny in Modern Family and the youngster who plays Brick not get recognized. “get recognized”. The bottom line is that that there are too many actors and shows that deserve recognition and not enough slots, that and politcs, I strongly suggest that the Emmy take a cue from the Golden Globes and nominate the ensemble cast from the different categories. At least that way more actors can be acknowledged ad less overlooked deserving performances.

  • Adele

I honestly don’t see how Glee’s Matthew Morrison is worthy of a nod for Best Actor in a Comedy….unless it’s based on the laugh worthy “rapping” of his.

    • Tracy

If he nabbed the nod from Charlie Sheen, MM is my new hero

      • Dav

HaHA!! I was going to complain about Morrison getting the nom as well until I read this. You may be right. Long live MM!!!

      • Sarah El

Fair point. I’d have rather Zachary Levi or Joel McHale stole that spot, but I’ll like with anyone NOT Charlie Sheen I suppose.

      • Mary

Zachary Levi would be a MUCH better choice but I agree that so long as Charlie Sheen didn’t get it the world is still a happy and sane place. ;-)

    • Meredith

Same here. As far as I’m concerned he and Lea stole a spot for far more deserving people.

    • orville

I agree–not worthy of the nom, but if it kept out Charlie Sheen then I’m all for it. I would rather have seen Joel McHale nominated though.

    • Adam

In general, Glee shouldn’t entirely BE in the Comedy department. I wouldn’t consider it comedy. I have probably never laughed (with the exceptions of Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch)

      • BonBon

At last, we have objective criteria for what qualifies as a comedy.

      • samantha

It is kinda hard to put dramedy’s in categories, which is why they’re usually snubbed (Gilmore Girls, etc). But Glee deserves it and it IS funny. Of course the best parts are Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch, but Emma and Brittney make me laugh out loud along with other characters.

    • TrP

He was really, really great in the episode where he finds out Terri is faking the pregnancy. I would bet that is the episode he submitted. Not a comedy performance, though….

      • Jean in Santa Rosa

I totally agree! When he confronted her in the kitchen with the baby pad, I was actually frightened for her. No, not at all funny, but cracking good acting!!!

  • Natalie

Can I get another eye roll for Mariska Hargitay??? I mean, please!

    • Elizabeth

      Amen!

    • Luddite

Seriously. I love Mariska Hargitay, but SVU has been awful the last couple of years and she’s been phoning it in (and who can blame her, given the material?).

    • Kay

      Agreed!

      • Shelby Michelle

        Agreed again.

    • Angie

I agree, Mariska gets nominated for the same thing every year. I mean that in the way she acts, same face all the time. GOD, more on People to other great actresses.

      • Angie

Should me MOVE not More. Sorry.

    • Kerrin

      word.

    • ann o’nymous

      :eye roll:

  • Lisa

Disappointed about Rose Byrne instead of Lily Tomlin.

    • XSE Drake

Lily is nominated in the Guest category.

      • Lisa

        Didn’t see that yet…Thanks!

      • Nicole

Another great nod in the guest actor category: Mike O’Malley for Glee! I’m really happy he got recognized for his role as Kurt’s dad.

    • JStor

Lily Tomlin is in as a Guest Actress, not supporting.

    • Brian

Lily’s nominated in the Guest Actress-Drama category (not Supporting Actress)

    • David

Lily Tomlin was nominated as a guest actor.

      • Craig H

How is Lily nominated in Guest, yet Martin Short is nominated in Supporting?

      • Rock Golf

Number of episodes. Short was in them all. Tomlin only a few.

  • M

You forgot to mention the lack of nomination for Lisa E. under “I’m Super-Pissed About”, just pointing that out to you.

    • Hugh

Word, the House cast doesn’t get enough Emmy love. Hugh Laurie is effin brilliant and sublime he should FINALLY win this year or else…!

      • Sarah

I’m SUPER pissed about House being snubbed from best drama series! WTF!

And honestly, the House cast all needs more recognition.

Crossing my fingers that Hugh finally wins.

      • Chiller

Why would House be included? House has sucked for years! If you want to see what an Emmy worthy show looks like, check out the last season of Lost.

The last episode of Lost was so heartbreakingly beautiful, everyone gave an outstanding performance.

And Matthew Fox, WOW!!! The man can act!!!! I really hope he wins!

I hope Terry & Michael win too.

      • Sarah El

TBH, as much as I do like the supporting cast of House, this was not the season. Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein got centric episodes, but even those were kinda of meh. I’m pissed Robert Sean Leonard didn’t get a nod for the fourth season when he truly kicked ass (or any of the earlier seasons), but now as overdue as the cast is, the show just has gotten worse over the years and doesn’t deserve any additional attention.

      • Juneau

While I agree Hugh Laurie is waaay over due for an Emmy, the show is not very good anymore. Each show is that same. Mysterious illness, misdiagnosis #1, Misdiagnosis #2, correct diagnosis, but now the solution may kill the patient, patient miraculously lives. Lame.

      • Brr

Juneau, while I agree with what you said about House’s stadard MO, I think you may have missed most of last season, in which the show mercilessly pummeled its own formula. Seriously, they had shows with House in a mental hospital, shows that centered on other characters or on the Wilson/House relationship. The Cuddy episode was a standout, with the “disease of the week” playing out humorously in the background of Cuddy’s day! If I were to bemoan any snub, it would be on behalf of Lisa Edelstein!

      • Katie

Im with you; Hugh BETTER win. Hes been amazing for years and keeps getting snubbed by people I honestly think arent better than him.

But I must say for those of you rolling their eyes about the not existant House drama-series-nom, then keep your eyes in their sockets. This season really wasnt that great. They went form a brilliant medical drama to a Grey’s Anatomy twin. And dont expect one next year either. The Huddy might kill them.

    • Sara

      And Chandra Wilson!

      • allie

OMG! I totally forgot about that! Yes Chandra definitely deserved something, as did Emily Deschanel. Her work on Bones is continually forgotten.

      • TVaddict70

agree on chandra, greys wasnt always good this year, but she rocked!

      • chitown_mimi

yes!!!! Chandra deserved a nod for the season finale!! Come on!

      • Rock Golf

        …and I can’t believe Katherine Heigl didn’t score a nom!!!!
        -
        — chh-heh
        -
        - mmm-mmmmff-mfff ha! ‘Scuse me
        -
        — heh-heh-heh-ha-ha. Hee-hee-haw-HAW-HAHAHAHAHAHA
        -
Sorry. I couldn’t say that with a straight face. Ha. Ha.

    • Chiller

Why would LE be included??? All the ladies nominated can act rings around LE.

      • ceva

Chiller, are you sure you know who Lisa E is? Have you ever seen her work in tons of other shows as well (Seinfeld, West Wing, Ally McBeal, etc…) The woman is fantastic and has gotten more gorgeous as she ages. That alone makes her a stand out. Sorry but your head is up your a$$ to say such a stupid thing. Stop hating on her. She’s amazing. Get over it.

      • @Ceva

Lisa E wasn’t nomunated so you’re the one who needs to get over it, lol

      • Sun

You are pretty obvious in your dislike for Lisa Edelstein. That’s too bad but it doesn’t make her any less deserving of an Emmy nom.

    • Cheery

Agreed, Lisa E. was overlooked. She could easily have taken Mariska Hargitay’s spot (who’s been doing the same routine for years).

However, as much as I love House, the SHOW did not deserve to be nominated this year. Hopefully this will be a kick in the ass to DS and KJ, letting them know they can’t coast on reputation.

      • chiller

Yes I have seen her in other shows. Her gig as the hooker in WW seems vaguely familar…could it be because she’s a one dementional actress???

Just face it. LE is a mediocre actress at best…..if she was capable of giving an emmy worthy performance she would would have been nominated already.

BTW Your posts shows your total lack of maturity, which isn’t surprising one bit.

      • chiller

@Sun. Oh.I’m sorry. I didn’t know that people were only allowed one opinion on LE’s acting…OK here goes…LE is the biggest, bestest actress in the whole wide word!!! No actor/actress living or dead can ever hold a candle to her acting abilities!!!! And since she’s the biggest, bestest actress the world has ever seen, there’s no need to waste everyone ‘s time on those silly award shows…she’ll win everyone of them…they’ll even invent a category just for her.

So how’d I do on the blind worshiping of LE????? did I pass your test to prove that I like LE?

  • Abi

Lack of Fringe love is unsurprising and still upsetting imo, John Noble is so damn amazing.

    • JB

Sci Fi shows NEVER get a nod. Or haven’t since X-Files was on the air. Just and FYI.

If they did Battlestar would have had a million of them by now, and that ending this past year was incredible.

      • Vikki Sixx

Ummm…Lost is rather sci-fi and that sure got a lot of love!

      • Sarah El

But Lost started off as a huge hit and didn’t really get too sci-fi for a few seasons. Not to mention that this is the final season, so that helps. Fringe has a much smaller audience than even Lost’s lesser viewed seasons, which hurts it a bit. Battlestar Galactica never had a big audience, it was on cable, and the Syfy/Sci-fi channel to boot, so it was never getting nominated, which sucks, because I do like Lost, but BSG was way better.

      • Dina

X files didn’t get very many noms until a few seasons in. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Emmy love in the years to come, but John Noble was such a bad oversight! I thought he really got comfortable with Walter’s quirks last season. Well…maybe next year

      • Shane

BSG was good, but you are off your rocker if you think it was better than LOST

  • Rosaliz

    I’m Super-Pissed About:
Lisa Edelstein doesn’t exist, there is only Hugh Laurie on House. Even if I’m excited that he is nominated, this is pisses me off. This is not the “Hugh Laurie Show”. Damn it!

    • swaggy

      The show is called “House”

    • Zatt

Baby, the show is Hugh Laurie, without him there would be no show. Lisa Edesltein is just a secondary character and she could be replaced any minute now and the show would go on whether you liked it or not

    • Erika

Hugh Laurie is House, without him there would be no show. Lisa Edelstein is just a secondary actress, she could be replaced tomorrow and the show would go on. So yes, this is the Hugh Laurie’s Show

      • Cheery

Well the Hugh Laurie Show is going down the drain…

      • @Cheery

“Well the Hugh Laurie Show is going down the drain…”
That’s because they turned House MD into Huddy MD!

  • ginsberg

Where the hell was Community?! Why no love?

    • Liz

I felt bad for Joel McHale who had to announce the nominations and none were for him or his shows. Knowing him, he will spin it to make it funny on this week’s Soup.

      • Lorie

I know! I can’t believe they invited him to make the annoucements, knowing he and his show would be snubbed. That’s cold!

      • Jak

Uh Lorie, I don’t believe the people who televise the announcements know who the noms are. That’s kind of the point.

      • Meg

But usually the person announcing is nominated, or at least their show is. Or at least that’s what I remember it being in recent years.

    • meliot

I agree Community should have been on the list. Additionally, WTF? Outstanding reality competition – where is Survivor? Hands down the 20th season is the best Survivor season EVER! The Amazing Race was unbelieveably boring this year. I watched the whole thing season, but turned it off 15 minutes before it ended because I knew those annoying brothers were going to win. This season had dumbest contestants ever.

    • Liz

I agree, I felt bad for Joel, especially when the host came out and lavished praise on Sofia Vergara, then turned to Joel and apologized about him not getting a nod. Very awkward, but he still had a funny comment (“It’s okay, I phoned it in). That’s why I love that guy!

  • Joli

Cox and Lisa Edelstein should have been nominated too!

    • Chiller

      why?

    • Riley

      agreed and agreed!

  • Alison

    I agree!!

  • Victoria

Yay for Chris Colfer and Mike O’Malley! :)

    • Chelsea

      THIS!

I’m super excited about Neil getting nominated in both supporting actor (HIMYM) and guest (for Glee)! And for the very deserving Jim Parsons, although I don’t understand why the series is overlooked each year.

      • froste

        because it’s horrible. no offense.
jim parsons is a good actor. but the show is horrible and predictable. i cant even begin…

      • thin

The plots are predictable, but the comedy certainly is not.

      • Sarah El

Because TBBT is okay at best without Jim Parsons.

      • Archie

I’m with you on this one! I was surprised to see that Chris Colfer & Mike O’Malley were actually recognized by the voters. I don’t know if they can cinch the win, but I’m super happy for them!

    • Angie

As long as Mike O’Malley and Jane Lynch win, I’m happy with this year’s Emmys. And someone has to win from Modern Family. Since they are all perfect in their roles, any win will do.

    • Rock Golf

Best Supporting Actor has two gays playing gay, one straight playing gay and at least one gay playing straight.
Ty? Jon? Do you have anything you want to get off your chest?

  • overfreakinwhelmed

Ed O’neill is the glue to that ensemble. seriously, Jon cryer REALLY???

    • rosie

Haha, I’m still not over Jon Cryer winning last year. I second the “REALLY???”

    • llevinso

Agreed. Ed O’Neill is perfect in MF. Two and Half Men is garbage.

    • Kerrin

      I echo your REALLY!?

    • Devin

I just don’t understand Jon Cryer over Ed O’Niell. As above, I say – REALLY? That is just so wrong. It’s not a bad choice. It is just wrong.

    • ally

I fifth your “REALLY?!” and raise you a WTF (why the face, of course.) :)

    • screenguy

I still think (oddly enough) that if Ed O’Neill had submitted as a Leading Actor he would have been nominated in that category.

  • marty

What about John Noble’s absence from this list? Have you ever seen anything so ridiculous?

    • Tony

I’m with you. At the end of this season I was so sure John Noble would win an Emmy that I’m really shocked he wasn’t even nominated. What they look for in an actor I don’t know. We the audience have enjoyed quite a lot of John’s performance as Dr. Bishop and as Walternate. The episode where they put back the pieces in his brain and turns into this maniac was impecable!
