'Deadliest Catch' continues to post record ratings

phil-harris-deadliest-catchImage Credit: Blair Bunting/Getty ImagesThe final episodes of Deadliest Catch that address the late Capt. Phil Harris continue to draw record audiences to the Discovery Channel. The July 6 episode — dubbed “Cain and Abel” — posted stellar ratings and attracted the largest audience (5.26 million) ever for the show. The episode also lured 3.08 million persons 25-54 and 2.55 million persons 18-49 — the largest audience ever in the demographic for a series in Discovery’s history.

Deadliest Catch was the No. 1 ad-supported cable telecast in prime time in almost every demographic that night.

The July 13 episode, titled “After the Catch,” will include a tribute to Harris while Deadliest Catch: Captain Phil Harris Remembered will bow July 20 and feature one-on-one interviews with fellow captains and Phil’s sons, Josh and Jake.

My bf got me started watching Deadliest Catch two years ago and I have been a faithful fan. It broke my heart when I learned of Capt. Harris’ stroke, then his death. Discovery has done beautiful episodes that enable us to share a glimpse of what happened in January and early February of this year. While this may seem heartless, I do wonder if Jake feels any responsibility for his actions for being caught stealing his father’s pain medication and the awful and painful words that ensued. His father was his personal rudder in life and now that he is gone I truly hope Jake has gained the strength to help himself and his brother Josh.

I am truly sorry to hear the news of Phil Harris passing away. To his Family, his children, and his Crew, may God give you the strength to make each day a little bit easier for you. I know its hard because I lost my Dad 10 years ago and there is not a day that goes by that i dont think about him. The pain will get easier but let his Memory Live On! Gods Speed to each of you!

I absolutlely love this show, seen every episode, but I don’t think I’m gonna watch next weeks 2 hour special reguarding Capt. Phil Harris’s death. My father past away last March and I know it sounds cliche but he and Phil were very much one-in-the-same. They’re deaths are also very much alike. I find it very annoying that the best ratings the show has ever had has come at such a cost.

Phil and my father were very much the same as well, I lost my father 4 yrs ago and with time it does get a little easier but the hurt and saddness still hurts so much. I miss my father greatly, but it was nice to tune in every Tuesday and see Phil, I will always remember Phil’s smile, because that same smile is in a picture frame in my living room. Jake and Josh take care of yourselves!!!

My sincere thoughts are with the crew, family and friends of the Cornelia Marie. Captain Phil was a special person. He reminded me of my dad. He loved tatoos, fishing, cursed a lot, and loved his family! They were both hard workers and I admire both greatly. I will miss Phil on the show and I know all of you will too. God bless all of you and I pray that the Lord will ease your pain. I know from losing my dad the pain is unbearable, but time does heal.Josh and Jake, hang in there and I hope you keep up the family business. I’m going to keep watching and supporting your show.

When you get right down to it, it is a truely odd thing that so many thousands of people feel they know someone because of a camera. No matter how odd that is–it doesn’t mean that thousands of people don’t honestly FEEL the loss of Phil Harris. Speaking as one of those people, I can say that not only do we FEEL his loss, we think about his loss throughout our daily lives. It’s a strange phenomenon. Anyway, we all go through life wondering if we have made a difference or, at least, left our “mark” in the world. Well, Capt Phil Harris certainly has! You will be thought of often and with sad hearts.

its kinda spooky how you can watch a show like this and actually feel like they are a part of your family. God bless Capt Phil and both of his boys. I really don’t think its fair to put any of the blame on Jake. Don’t you think he’s got a big enough bureden??? The stroke was inevitable. Our deepest condolances to Capt. Phils family.

Just wanted to give my regards to the Friends and Family of Captain Phil. And to the sons, hang in there! You have everything he has taught you to draw from. I lst my Dad last year. We were Partner in work as well as Father and son. I take solitude in knowing I spent as much time with him as possible. And continue to operate the famil business as he had taught me. So rest in peace Captain Phil. And live for the respect and memory fo your Dad guys!
