'Big Bang' star Jim Parsons on his 'bittersweet' Emmy nod and those pesky contract talks

jim-parsonsImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSWith the cast of The Big Bang Theory in contract renegotiations—and Jim Parsons’ peeps possibly angling to get him the show’s fattest paycheck—the actor’s second Emmy nomination couldn’t have come at a better time. But, when I spoke with him, he didn’t seem inclined to use the accolade as a bargaining tool. “I cannot wait to get back to work,” insisted the funnyman, “and nothing but the fiery gates of hell could keep from portraying Sheldon again.”

Still, Parsons was bummed that the CBS hitcom wasn’t recognized. “Bittersweet is the perfect way to describe [the feeling],” he told me. “I of course was excited, but it would’ve been so nice to be able to rejoice with the whole group over a show nomination.

“Next year,” he added.

In the meantime, the genius’ portrayer won’t be wracking his brain trying to decide which episode he’ll use to entice Emmy voters. “I am submitting the one where Sheldon is accepting an award, and ends up on stage drunk and loses his pants,” he revealed. Why that one? “Sex sells.

“But in all seriousness,” he continued, “I worked with everybody in one-on-one scenes [in this outing] and I thought it really showed very specific facets of Sheldon and how he relates to this person and that person.”

So how do you think Parsons will do, come Emmy night? Weigh in below.

I definitely love this show, but I do think that it’s becoming too Sheldon-centric. Not that that’s bad, but perhaps write the other characters in more.

    • DMR

I definitely see your point in season 3. Leonard has seemingly become the straight-man (read sane person) to Sheldon’s crazy instead of the balanced act they had in season 1.

Either way i cannot get enough of the show.

    • housemdfan

I get your point… Sheldon would be awesome, but the show it´s the big bang theory, not the sheldon show…

It was sad than Leonard and Penny relationship enden in pure sex and pointless things, Wollowitz stoped having his personality after he got a girlfiend (even lampshaded in one episode)and raj just seems like a regular guest star or something, and almost everytime he speaks it´s a gay hint…

      • John

Making the show better doesn’t necessarily mean cutting Sheldon out or making him unimportant, it means making other characters more than non-Sheldons.

      • Dwight Schrute

Big Bang is a terrible throwback to old sitcoms with laugh tracks to tell stupid people when to laugh.

    • Sefa

For the most part, I wouldn’t say that was a bad thing. I found the show to be so much funnier once they harnessed the full Parsons potential. But sometimes, the focus on Sheldon goes too far, and he becomes an unlikable caricature while the others appear mean to him. A little balance would definitely be nice. More Raj would be awesome, actually. He’s my other favorite.

      • Chelsea

I completely agree and would also love to see more of Raj. He’s the character that makes me laugh the most aside from Sheldon obviously.

      • Dez

Some of my favorite moments have been in Raj episodes- my absolute favorite is when Penny is practicing her bartending skills and he starts talking. I love that one!

    • Erin

ITA – Sheldon’s my favorite but I enjoy the ensemble of geeks (and beauty) and lately they’ve been focusing on Sheldon way too much. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

    • PiratesDaughter

      I couldn’t say it better.

  • david w

I honestly don’t care about the emmy’s or any other award show I quit watching them years ago after seeing my favorite shows lose to shows I hated.

    • maia

yep me too. Love Jim Parsons though and BBT being left off the best comedy list just confirms why the Emmys are a joke.

    • darclyte

Many of my favorites NEVER get nominated, so I really don’t give a rat’s tuckus. How many Emmy noms did BSG and Buffy ever get? Exactly.

      • Olga

Hell, many of my favorites – get canceled!
(and I still did not recover from loosing Firefly!)

      • Jaymii

This year wasn’t half bad for this though. The CW has a couple more years to grow, but when Friday Night Lights gets a nod – all is right with the world.

    • Liz

Yea, Jim Parsons was robbed last year and NPH is just getting b***h slapped by emmy voters he’s way better than the other supporting actors. I mean why is 2.5 men still winning awards? Seriously, who is Charlie Sheen blowing to get votes?

      • charlie sheen wasn’t nominated.

  • Jason

Of course nothing else was nominated, because the show is, overall, a geek-spiced retread of “That 70′s Show.” Parsons character and performance stand out like a sore thumb, because they’re easily the best, most original aspects of the show. Just because the writers throw in references to iCal downloads doesn’t make it emmy-worthy.

    • Well

Just because you have an opinion doesn’t make it a fact.

      • Skip182

        Bazinga

      • Joy

I have an opinion that I think is a “fact”. Johnny Galecki is funny, but please get him some glasses that he can see through. He must have a terrible “pain in the neck” from not looking through them but under them.

    • Howie

then how do you explain that horrible show 30 ROCK keeps getting all these votes

      • amanda

They are in LOVE with Tina Fey, plain and simple.

      • TGH

The difference is 30 Rock is funny. The Big Bang Theory is painfully unfunny. It’s one terrible ‘I’m a nerd’ punchline after another… Ugh, it’s lowest common denominator crap. Right there with Two and a Half Men.

      • Matt

I agree with TGH completely. 30 Rock’s a hundred times better than the reused crap that the BBT tries to pass off as funny. It’s way to repetitive and not nearly as original as 30 Rock. The only people who do not like 30 Rock are those too dumb to understand the jokes.

  • PityPie

Thank god TBB was snubbed. It’s a bland, formulaic, frankly unfunny sitcom that, naturally, is being embraced by the masses as a beacon of ‘quality’ and ‘humour.’

    • Hey

      It’s a a troll.

    • amanda

I’m not trying to troll or get flamed but I tried to get into it because I love me some David Healy but ehhhhhhh. CBS TV just doesn’t do it for me I guess.

    • Dwight Schrute

Agreed! This kind of lame sitcom needs to die forever.

  • Nina

    “Next year” <3

  • Jamie

Looove this show. Happy for Jim.

  • DMR

I became a huge fan of BBT since i just discovered it in 2010. I have to say Jim is one of the best things to watch on TV in a long time. I think this is great for him.

I too wish the rest of the cast got their moment in the spotlight they deserve.

  • Alex

I hope he wins the Emmy this year! Well deserved. If Alec Baldwin wins AGAIN I will be very unhappy. Just wish the show got nominated…maybe next year.

  • Amy

TBBT is the new Two and a Half… both are soulless and dumb comedies created for middle america.

    • Torrence5

Amy – if by “soulless” you mean funny, well acted, & well written comedies that appeal to adults then you hit the nail on the head; otherwise, you are a moron.

      • Dwight Schrute

Nope. Big Bang is routine crap for mouthbreathers.

    • Carm

Amy, are TV shows really supposed to have a soul? Are you implying that a dumb comedy was created for dumb people? If so, that is stupid. What you watch on TV has nothing to do with your intelligence, or lack thereof. TV is mostly for entertainment, especially comedies.

    • Steph

Um, TBBT is far and away superior to Two and a Half men. First of all, TBBT is actually funny and smart.

      • Dave

People only think that The Big Bang Theory is an intelligent show because the main characters are intelligent people. But just because Sheldon and Leonard are smart does not make the writing smart. TBBT may be a step above the dreadful Two and a Half Men, but that’s not saying much. I gave TBBT a chance when people at EW.com kept raving about it, but it’s really not that funny or smart.

    • char

I am from middle america and I know many people who do not like 2 men. I also know many people from “middle america” who LOVE arrested development. just because we are from the midwest does not mean anything. get over your self.

    • char

amy-just because you are from “middle america” does not mean you are like dumb comedy. TBBT is so smart about geek chic culture and I know many people from the dready “middle america”(myself) who loved arrested development.

  • CiCi

I agree. Love the show, but they are focusing too much on the Sheldon chracter just like how they ruined HIMYM with the Barney character. Too much of a good thing = the loss of the good thing.

Now increase Penny’s role please and the Indian parents. They haven’t been around much

    • housemdfan

Or EVERYONE´s role except of Sheldon… Raj and Wollowitz decreased too…

    • Garry

Yes, the show is in serious danger of becoming “The Sheldon Show.” It’s been happening since the middle of season 2, with no let-up in sight. It’s the Fonzie Syndrome all over again.

I’d love to see an entire episode WITHOUT Sheldon, so the other characters really have a chance to shine and grow a bit more.

      More Penny, please!

And why is Leonard now being treated as if he’s some incompetent, useless scientist? He still has a genius I.Q., but none of that is being played up anymore. It’s just more of Sheldon being the “smart” one, becoming increasingly rude and obnoxious to everyone else. I can’t take much more of it.

  • Jason

The show isn’t getting funnier. It’s running out of good jokes.

    • George

So how exactly does the funniest damn show get funnier???

  • BigJ

So Glad BBT didn’t make teh list. The show has really become a parody of itself and you can set your joke by the recycled joke cliche’s. What was funny and fresh in Season 1 – Sheldon’s weirdness about food, the couch etc, Howard’s Jewish mother and perviness, and Raj not being able to talk to women is all predictable and stale now. Yet they revisit those same topics every week. I’m about to quit.

    • housemdfan

I don´t think the jokes are the problem… they need to add a new story, now than Penny and Leonard actually went out together; their love was like the first trama on the show, and actually become true a little fast, on other shows the principal characters get together at last.

They need a radical plot change or something…

    • Frank

Thanks for coming, don’t let the door hit you in the A$$ on the way out

  • BigJ

Meant watch by the recycled joke cliche’s

    • Sal

Your comment might carry more weight if you knew when and when not to use a possessive.

  • myr421

I love Big Bang and especially love Sheldon. Go Sheldon. Next year the show needs a nod.

  • Doc Jensen Minion No 1

I would watch a half an hour of Sheldon just roaming the ball pit and popping up to shout, “BAZINGA!” LOL!!!

    • Jessica

LOL! That comment made my day. And I agree 100%.

    • Gui_Kenobi

it would be the best episode ever, hehehe

      • Jackie

YES! That episode was fantastic. I think read article where Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons said they had such a hard time shooting that scene b/c they just couldn’t stop laughing themselves everytime he said Bazinga!
