'The Good Wife' exclusive: Season 2 kicks off with game-changing twist!

Filed under: News, Scoop and tagged: ,

No one can accuse CBS’ The Good Wife of playing it safe in season 2.

When the Emmy-nominated procedural returns this fall, Lockhart & Gardener will be in the midst of merging with another firm. The ensuing shakeup throws “everyone for a loop,” reveals executive producer Robert King, “[especially partners] Will [Josh Charles] and Diane [Christine Baranski]. And Alicia [Julianna Margulies], who thought she was [in the clear], once again has to prove herself in new surroundings.”

She’s not the only one. Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) finds her private eye turf threatened by her counterpart at the new company. The character, Blake, is described as a thirtysomething hottie whose cynical attitude is offset by lots of humor and sexual charisma. Wife is also casting the role of Corey, the head of the new firm and a mentor of sorts to Alicia.

“We want to improve on what we did the first season,” says King. “We want to continue to take chances, be contemporary, and push the envelope.”

Sounds like Wife is well on its way to accomplishing all three. Wouldn’t you agree?

    Sounds boring. :(

    • Kylie

This whole show is boring. Why is this surprising?

      • AshleyBrooke

But apparently not as boring as you, since you’re on here whining about it.

      • Ashley

Now, now, no need for harsh words. It’s okay to admit that this show is just too smart for you. Run along now and get back to your primetime soap’s and leave the intelligent stuff to us adults.

      • hank

No need to be cocky, you don’t have to be smart at all to follow the show. Its just entertaining.

  • Kate

ahhhh….. how many days until the premiere!! Love, love, LOVE this show!!! hope this twist doesn’t screw up will’s plan!!

    • Erinn

What I have caught of this show is pretty good. The only bad thing about it is the lame name.

      • Rachel

Dude, so right. The Good Wife? Disgraced Philandering Husband’s Incarceration Forces Wife to Work at Big Chicago Law Firm would be an improvement and far less literal.

      • sally1018

The Good Wife is a perfect name for this show. After all, it’s named after the main character Alicia.

  • Clara

This show seriously bores me. I’ll be watching Parenthood instead during that time!

    • dorianB

Who watches shows live still? Just DVR both.

      • Dream Out Loud

maybe you could just record it on your Betamax.

    • @….

If it bores you i suggest you stop watching. What a concept.

Clara, this is terrible news. We will do everything in our power to convince you to keep watching. Please tell us what changes you would like to see, Clara, and we promise they will all be made on the season’s first show. Critical acclaim and Grammy nominations mean nothing to us. The only standard we use to measure our show’s success in whether you, Clara, are watching.

      • cg

haha except it would be Emmy nominations :)

      • Sarcastic Pr*ck

You’re absolutely right. I stand corrected.

  • Kiki

    OMGGGGGGGGG SOUNDS SOOO GOOD!

  • Camila Oliveira

All I really want to know is whether Alicia will choose Will or Peter. I just don’t really care about the firm. And, yeah, I love this show.

  • aughra

Sorry, the real twist would be for Alicia to have a short affair with Will. Watch her balance the thrill of getting some love & attention from someone who hasn’t made her feel dirty v. the guilt of being an honest person doing something she’s not fully comfortable with, and is still attached to Peter. All with the possible threat of being caught, by hubby or by press. Maybe they’ll push that relationship in addition to the job shake-up. A second “will she or won’t she make the job cut” won’t be as interesting as they think.

    • Jen

I don’t think that’s much of a “twist.” Didn’t the season end with that as one of the two directions she’ll go? Will she or won’t she pick up Will’s call? Besides, I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive.

      • Jen

sorry, I meant the merger and the affair are not mutually exclusive.

      • Meli

I wouldn’t respect Alicia if she violated her vows and put her family at risk. She loves her kids too much. The kiss last season was a bit too much – just on the edge of turning me off. Love love this show, but Alicia’s integrity is a big part of that.

I think navigating a new political field, with all of the upheaval and trying to piece things together will be very interesting to watch. Add in the interesting twist of Calinda… It’ll be on my DVR must watch list for sure.

    • DarkHawke

Your idea sounds MUCH better than this merger thing! I agree: putting Alicia’s job on the line again is more a repeat of the first season than a “game-changer.”. Also, it takes the focus off what I thought was both the saving grace of the show and would have been the focus of the second season: Alicia & Peter’s minefield of a relationship. We’ll have to see what happens, of course, and I have some justifiable hope that this won’t be a major pooch-screw, but on the face of it, this isn’t a positive turn.

  • Wil

Sounds good, but only if it isn’t a repeat of last year…sounds almost like a way to just do what they did last year again :/

  • westonia

the show is great.there’s no argument about that.whoever doesnt’t like it-tough guys, you clearly aren’t the target audience.i agree that it shouldn’t follow the first season’s steps-no more “job cut” stories.first of all its done, second, its a credit crunch time producers, don’t remind us about it in every show we watch.
i loved the way it ended.it was intense and it held me glueded to the screen.mainly the emotions.the psychology.let’s keep it that way.will?peter?defo i want to know how it will end.not gonna say which man i prefer..but..bring it on!

  • TheGoodFan

Kalinda v. Blake could be good if it was extremely contentious, in a Spy v. Spy kinda way.

I just don’t want him to make her look foolish/hook up with her. Kalinda needs someone WORTHY, not somebody whose name calls to mind a tennis pro.

Well, I have great faith in the Kings, so I guess I should just can it and buckle in for the ride.

So season 2 is basically a reboot of Season 1? Same underlying work-related plot, and the easiest way for them to keep Cary around, in the same role to irritate Alicia all year long all over again. Am I the only one here who does not want this?

    • erin

yeah, i’m not impressed either. the dynamic personal relationships are much more interesting.

  • ernie

    Well, it didn’t work for Grey’s Anatomy….

But maybe they can pull it off. I was expecting something more interesting though.

  • Leesa

The fact this show didn’t sign Titus Welliver as a regular cast member this season still irks me, so no amount of twists can appease me.

  • Summer Sun

I love love love this show! Especially the female characters. Love to hear Diane’s laugh…

  • SilentRage

Wasn’t thrilled with the supposed “cliffhanger”..I mean they pretty much showed you the end in the previews…I’ll probably catch S2 though Juliana M has some great legs (: oh and the writing is pretty good

    • cg

There are a lot of flaws and still it is one of the best shows on TV. I love Kalinda!
