'No Ordinary Family' exclusive: 'Minds' grad Josh Stewart eyes Watcher role

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Criminal Minds and Dirt alum Josh Stewart has been tapped to play Watcher to Michael Chiklis’ nascent superhero clan on ABC’s buzzy fall drama.

I’m told Stewart, who also appeared in the final year of Third Watch, will recur throughout the season.

Exec produced by Greg Berlanti and Jon Harmon Feldman, Family airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m./ET beginning Sept. 28.

Oooh, Josh Stewart! I really liked him on “Criminal Minds”. Definitely give me another reason to check “No Ordinary Family”.

  • Katie

Tell me his character doesn’t have a Louisiana accent. Please.

    • wagonmaker

Give him a break, cher, he’s from West Virgina and comes by`the accent sort of naturally….

      • Katie

Really? Because it was pretty awful on CM. Like, terrible.

      • Tego Livi

Disagree–I thought the accent was hot.

  • VLH

I’ll watch just to see him. Like how I only watch the Buick commercial cause he in it.

  • Sharon

So what exactly is his role? What does “Watcher” mean?

    • angel

watcher comes from “buffy the vampire slayer” a watcher(Giles) was the person that guided and trained Buffy plus knew all the background of monsters and stuff. Im guessing this guy will be training the family and give them missions and such.

      • John

Or it could be like the Watcher from Marvel Comics who does not interfer but just records events as they happen. But I think Angel’s take is more spot on.

      • Jackie

I was thinking Watcher was a position name, like on “Buffy”, only maybe a government position. You know, like in “The Incredibles”, there was the government agent who was sort of a superhero liaison, making sure that they kept their cover and stuff.

      • DocRules

Angel’s take is more than likely correct, as Giles wouldn’t have been mentioned if it wasn’t a Buffy reference.

  • Flávia

    Loved him in Third Watch!

  • Josh

    Watcher? That’s uh…weird.

    • Buffy Who?

      You’re weird.

  • LaShawna

Well I guess since AJ Cook was let go, we wouldn’t be seeing him on Criminal Minds anymore anyway. It’s good he got another job. :)

    • Becky

You beat me too it. My first thought when I saw the article was “Well, JJ’s gone so I guess he got kicked to the curb as well.”

  • Steven

I still se him from Dirt. I miss that show. Just another reason to watch this!

  • Lorie

I wasn’t planning to watch this show, but now I’ll have to b/c of Josh. Loved him on CM.

  • topoopon

So he’s like a reporter stalking them? Is he trying to get a story on them? “Watcher” seems creepy. Or maybe he’s another superhero character.

    • A.J.

Ah… how quickly Buffy references have been forgotten.

      • Timothy

        Wait, whats a “Buffy”?

      • BTVS

That’s a joke, right? Or are all your vampires sparkly emos?

      • topoopon

Oh ok, this guy used to be on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I never heard of him, I never saw that show.

      • Gusar

@topoopon: No, this guy wasn’t on Buffy. The concept of a “watcher” comes from Buffy. The watcher trains and guides the slayer and also knows a lot about the underworld (vampires and demons and such).
There’s no underworld in No Ordinary Family, but I guess the “watcher” here will know a lot about villains and stuff, and will train the family how to deal with their superpowers and how to use them properly.

  • Rob J.

    Two things occurred to me:
    .
    a) I wonder who the family’s Third Watcher is going to be.
    .
    b) I hope they bring on A.J. Cook to play his wife.
    .
    – Rob

      Hahahhaa

  • eskeigh

He’ll always be Finney of Third Watch to me.

  • JR

Actually, the term “Watcher” can have a lot of different meanings as you can see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watcher

Basically, though, it usually refers to a person or organization that secretly watches or tracks the movements and actions of particular individuals.

  • LDSK

OK, for all of you folks on here lamenting how quickly “Buffy” is forgotten I would like to call your attention to a little TV show called “Highlander.” I still remember wanting to become a Watcher and getting one of those cool wrist tattoos.

    • Jackie

Oh wow, I haven’t thought about “Highlander” in YEARS! Thanks for the reminder, though. And yes, the wrist tattoos were pretty cool :)

    • S.

Thank You LDSK! I love Giles, but Highlander was a trailblazer here.

    • TriciaA

That was my first thought when I heard the term ‘watcher’…from Highlander! Miss that show, wonder if it’s on Netflix?

    • Dav

Oh Man, Highlander ROCKED!!! And they developed the concept of a watcher long before Buffy ever existed. I guess most people would be more familiar with the Buffy version though.

  • Jessi

Was I the only one that read this and was envisioning Jon Stewart until I looked at the photo and realized Oh, Josh Stewart! Oops Makes more sense I suppose.

    • Melissa

That’s funny. I thought they meant Josh Charles from The Good Wife. I don’t know who this guy is.
