The passing of Capt. Phil Harris continues to pull in large audiences to the sixth season of Deadliest Catch. Tuesday’s episode in which the beloved captain of the Cornelia Marie died of a pulmonary embolism attracted 8.5 million viewers – a record for the Discovery show. It was the No. 1 program in cable on Tuesday among men and women 25-54 and was the third highest-rated Discovery Channel broadcast of all time (behind Raising the Mammoth and Walking with Dinosaurs, both of which aired in 2000).
For 14 consecutive weeks, Deadliest Catch has been the No. 1 non-sports cable show among person and men 25-54.
Meanwhile, the new episode of After the Catch wrapped the night as the second-highest ranked cable show among men and women 25-54. It averaged 6.8 million viewers. It ranks as the fifth-highest rated Discovery Channel broadcast of all time.
‘Deadliest Catch’ recap: An emotional goodbye to Capt. Phil Harris

Unfortunatley, I couldn’t be counted in those numbers.
Two minutes into the show the power went out on my street, I endedup having to watch the encore show.
Sometimes life really can be a pain in a$$
…
HAHAHA
Continue to watch for free and your programs will be limited to government mandated mind control. This stuff costs money to produce. Time to pay your fair share…like VP Biden says.
I’m not counted because I watched it online. Cable is way too expensive and goes up in price year after year.
HOW CAN I WATCH IT? I MISSED IT ALSO-WAS IN HOSPITAL. THANKS, KATHY
@ Kathy — I’m pretty sure Deadliest Catch is re-broadcast throughout the week. Don’t know exactly when.
Sorry for your lost always in my prayers an your dad is in good hands
will miss captain phil on the show
The remark made by one of the captains on After The Catch last night that Phil could just draw you in is absolutely true. I have loved this man though all of the seasons of Deadliest Catch. There will never be another like him. I hope someone writes a book if they haven’t already. I will be first in line. You are loved and missed Phil, more than you could possibly know.
While they aren’t books about Phil, both Sig Hansen and the Hillstrand brothers have written books and they are EXCELLENT.
I think it would be cool to see all the crab boats on the show together in one area out at sea,at the same time as another tribute and donate one crab pot with a buoy with Phil,s name on it.This way Phil will be fishing at the rocks every time someone passes by the area.
That’s a great idea!! I hope they do something like that!
will miss captain phil on the show.
He was a good man. To his boys hang inthere and be strong. God Bless you all.
I fail to understand why so many people are watching, and gushing about, what amounts to essentially a televised snuff film. Doesn’t it bother anybody that Discovery has dragged the man’s death out over FOUR EPISODES, not to mention next week’s 2-hour retrospective? Telling the man’s story is one thing. Wallowing in it for ratings is something else entirely. People should be ashamed.
grow up F
What you fail to realize is that Discovery Channel requested to stop taping Captain Phil while he was in the hospital. They wanted to give him his privacy. It was the good Captain’s adamint request that kept the cameras there.
Deadliest Catch is by far the BEST and only reality show on tv. After so many years of watching all of the Captains and deckhands, you almost become a part of their lives. DC is awesome and probably one of my fave tv shows. RIP Capt. Phil – faithful viewer since the beginning.
I agree 100 percent!!! RIP Captain Phil, you will be missed! Stay strong Jake and Josh!
F- you are entitled to your opinion. But you’re wrong, camel breath. We fans have a lot of emotional investment in Phil after several years, and we needed the time in order to deal with, and process the reality of his passing. Watching all the events leading up to his passing helped me to “get my brain around” how and why it happened. Some of us care and want to know how it went down.
As RaRa said, you are entitled to your opinion, but you can still be wrong. The show is a record of a few weeks of fishing during the season, which is spread out over a few months when aired. Just as a week of boat time doesn’t correspond to a week’s episode, neither did Phil’s “ordeal.” He lived for a couple of weeks after his stroke, which was conveyed in the footage shown on the show. His time in the hospital was interspersed with what was happening on the vessels still at sea.
So even by removing all of the emotional aspects that enabled the viewers to come to terms with yes, this was the end of the line for Phil, the editors and network showed Phil’s passing in the same respectful manner they showed EVERYTHING that took place on the boats they film.
Sadie, he lived 9 days after his stroke, not weeks. I have no problem with Mr. Harris and his family insisting on a “show must go on” mentality, but SIX HOURS is excessive (not to mention all the “After the Catch” footage as well). It’s all so maudlin and overdone at this point. People are certainly entitled to express their grief and their “emotional investment.” But what is this article about again? Oh, Discovery’s jubilant press release about RATINGS. Yay for them.
YOU KNOW IF YOU WATCHED THE SHOW PHIL WAS A VERY DOWN TO EARTH MAN WHO KNEW HIS TIME WAS AT HAND DID IT EVERY OCCUR TO YOU THAT HE WANTED TO TELL HIS STORY IT WAS AS IF WE WERE PART OF HIS FAMILY AND IN A VERY SMALL WAS WE ARE THERE ARE LESSON’S TO BE LEARNED IN LIFE AND SOMETIMES THIS IS THE WAY ITS TOLD JUST MAYBE HE COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE GOD BLESS PHIL AND HIS SON’S AND All the crews out of the bering sea who allow us to be part of there lives.
F what drugs are you on you cold hearted idiot, do you think when someone dies that you get over it in a short period of time.. If so im glad you are not a part of my family.. RIP Captain Phil..
Been watching for 6 years. Religiously. Phil will be missed. Stay strong and focused. God bless.
Big fan of show sad to see and hear about Capt. Phils passing my best wishes to Phils family on and off the water GOD BLESS.
RIP Capt. Phil
Deadliest Catch is definitly the Best Show on TV. PERIOD! Great Job to everyone at Discovery, Thank You for putting this on the air.
I think “Rockin Chair” by The Band would be a fitting tribute song
F- you are a twisted person. Actually this was a way for all of that loved captain phil to grieve. why don’t you just stick to watching the bachelorette
exactly miyansha, phil told the to tell the entire story. what a remarkable man he was, god i wish i had known him personally. I think he is the only person that I didn’t know personally for whom I cried when they passed away. RIP Captain Phil, this entire nation loved you.
I was also very affected when Steve Irwin (“Crocodile Hunter”) passed away.
I loved it when Phil was trying to get a cig in the hospital. *LOL* Capt. Phil all the way! My whole family has been watching this show for several years and it is fascinating. What a unique bunch of guys – a toast to all of ‘em.
F-Did you ever stop to think that is something that the captian wanted. Apparently you didn’t watch after the catch when his camera man was on. You have your opinion we will have ours.
At no point in time has it been reported that Mr. Harris requested the ad nauseum coverage Discovery has been vomiting out all in the name of RATINGS. His story could have been told tastefully in a retrospective episode dedicated to his life and his family, rather than dragged out and flogged week after week after week. He was a good guy and he’ll be missed, but how does Discovery trumpeting the show’s ratings help to tell his story?
F- did you even bother to watch after the catch or read any of the interviews the boys or Cpt. J. Hillstrand gave? Phil called the camera guy into the room and requested that they keep filming. Johnathan and the oldest Harris son have both confirmed this. The camera guy wanted to stop filming, but Phil told him to continue.
While I’m excited for the show to have such high ratings, I think it’s kind of sad that so many people are just tuning in for the first time because of Phil’s death. They completely missed out on getting to know and love him over the past 6 years.
