HBO announced today that it has picked up the new drama series Luck that stars Dustin Hoffman. The project from David Milch (Deadwood) and Michael Mann (Heat) focuses on horse racing. “Michael Mann delivered a pilot from David Milch’s brilliant script that took our breath away,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO programming. “We are truly exicted that these two artists, and our extraordinary cast headed by Dustin Hoffman, will be bringing Luck to life.”
Luck will begin shooting this fall at Santa Anita Park and other Los Angeles locations. It also stars Dennis Farina, Jason Gedrick and Nick Nolte and features guest star Jill Hennessy.

milch didn’t write the wire
David Milch made Deadwood, not The Wire.
I’m a little surprised to see Dustin Hoffman doing a TV series, but it sounds pretty interesting.
So HBO cancels THE COMEBACK yet decides that picking up this boring show is a good idea?
the comeback was like 5 years ago. time to get over it.
LOL^10 haha
And can you believe MASH is over! haha
The COmeback probably works best as a one-season series. And it’s a brilliant season. And if you’re an HBO fan but think a show created by Milch is going to be boring, then get thee to the CW.
What’s more irritating is that Curb is still on for like 10 years and Comeback got only 1 year.
Wow, lazy journalism. Anyway, as to the topic, I adore Deadwood and detest John from Cincinnati, so I’m not sure what I think. Let’s hope it’s on the Deadwood end of things.
John From Cincinnati was amazing.
I agree I thought John was weird as can be but brilliant. Too bad they knew they were getting canceled and had to wrap it all up in a forced finale.
I didn’t think Milch knew. I thought that was just the season 1 finale. Am I wrong? Where can I read about it?
agree.
I always feel like I’m suddenly stupid for detesting John in Cincinnati. Really, I like a lot of great TV. But I just felt it was too opaque. And the lead kid couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag. But it went beyond him.
Somebody forgot to use their spellchecker. I think Mr. Lombardo was “excited,” not “exicted.”
Y’all are a bunch of fussy little somethins on these message boards…CHILL
Won’t chill, when you confuse something so fundamental about shows. The Wire is David Simon’s masterpiece, and Deadwood Milch at his sublime best. It’s not like we’re taking issue with a mispelling. The mistake is tantamount to saying Steven Spielberg created Star Wars.
eh, it’s all HBO. shut up.
Fine, emmy. Then next time we hang out and you wanna watch Deadwood, I’ll put on Sex and the City. Huh’t!
no, YOU shut up!

HBO is going down hill fast. Even True Blood is losing my interest this season… if it weren’t for the promise of another season of East Bound and Down, I’d have ditched my subscription long ago.
Hopefully, David Milch can actually finish an HBO series this time around without either he or the network yanking it off the air.
Fingers crossed. Though I’m pretty sure he didn’t want either Deadwood or JFC to end. That was all HBO.
“Get thee to CW.” — nice tip of the hat to the Bard, Brian.
Sounds like a promising offer for all us lovers of quality TV!
