Exclusive: 'Parenthood' promotes Jasmine and Jabbar!

parenthoodImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBC; Inset: Chris Haston/NBCIt looks like Crosby’s Little Family Unit That Could will remain intact next season on Parenthood.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Joy Bryant and Tyree Brown — who play Dax Shepard’s onscreen girlfriend Jasmine and son Jabbar respectively — have been upgraded to full-fledged series regulars.

Bryant’s promotion actually kicked in last spring, while Brown’s deal was just finalized yesterday.

In the season 1 finale, Crosby impulsively followed Jasmine and Jabbar to New York. It’s probably safe to assume that their East Coast adventure will hit a snag and they’ll all end up moving back to the Bay Area. But I could be wrong. Don’t think I am.

Thoughts? Excited Jasmine and Jabbar are sticking around?

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. I’m excited that we will still get to see Crosby, Jasmine and Jabbar this season because Dax Shepard is one of the reasons I started watching the show.

    • Sharon

      Dax is cute isn’t he?

    • Liz

I agree, I find the story of this unit to be the best. I have a hard time seeing Lauren Graham as anything but Lorelei Gilmore, I think the Crosby storyline is great. There are a lot of deadbeat dad’s in the field of television and it’s nice to see a show trying.

      • will

But Mae Whitman is quickly filling the void with an exceptional portrayal of Lauren Grahams daughter that I am quickly forgetting what a Gilmore Girl is.

      • Tarc

Though I’d like to see Mae be given more of a character arc than random teen acting out. they’ve given hints that there is more there; now I want to see it. Graham and Whitman are teriffic together, and the guy that plays the brother is also sweet in an understated way. I’m also glad that they finally gave Bonnie Bedelia something to do towards the end of the season. Boy, she certainly can grab your heart and carry it along where ever she goes!

      • will

        seriously Bonnie Bedelia FTW

“There are a lot of deadbeat dad’s in the field of television and it’s nice to see a show trying.”

Well…unfortunately, there are a lot of deadbeat dads in real life. I don’t see TV exaggerating the situation at all.

Yes. I love Jabbar!!! He is adorable!!!!

  • Carly

I’m glad. I like Jabbar, and it’s I’m happy we’ll get to see him know his father.

  • Amanda

Jabbar is adorable. Love watching Crosby stepping up to the plate. Great move for the show.

    • Shara

I totally agree with you. I love this show and I adore Crosby’s new little family. The little actor that plays Jabbar is so adorable!

  • T

SO excited. Both Jasmine and Jabbar are an absolute pleasure to watch! I agree that this is turning into one of the best shows on network TV.

  • XK

I was hoping it would be Minka’s character.

Then again, I’m not a fan of Dax at all, so I suspect I’m in the minority with this show anyway. :)

    • MsDaisy

I don’t get the Dax appeal either.

    • AuntieD

Who is Minka? Crosby’s previous gf?

      • Mia

Minka=Minka Kelly she was the theropist

  • dryedmangoez

Oh, I thought they -were- series regulars already.

  • NorthernStar

But wasn’t Bryant a regular from the get-go? her name and photo is already in the show’s opening theme!

  • ST

I didn’t use to be a fan of Dax’s until this show. He’s completely changed my mind! Love this show and now am a fan of Dax Sheppard (I should have known my girl Kristen Bell wouldn’t choose a goob for her fiance!) :-)

  • bloom

This storyline was the highlight of season 1. Good to see the actors sticking.
By the way, Jabbar is currently the cutest child actor on TV!

    • Maggie

i’d put him right there with Jackson Brundage, aka Jamie Scott on One Tree Hill

  • Brock Germain

They were in the credits, so I assumed they already were regulars!

  • Michelle

I kind of assumed Jabbar would be around, and to be honest, Jasmine sort of rubs me the wrong way. Wouldn’t wish the cute little family to break, though.

    • J. Norman

I agree. If I was Crosby, I would do everything I could to stay with his (boss) first girlfriend and keep and develop his relationship with Jabbar.
Last years storyline had Crosby totally in love with the thought of being a dad. But that doesn’t automatically extend to Jasmine.
That may well be a major story line in the upcoming season.
Crosby is going to have to come to grips with both his sudden fatherhood, and how it affects his career and previous relationship

      • Maria

I did not get the impression that there was unfinished business between Crosby and Katie. She could not handle the idea of Crosby having a kid and not telling her about it for several months. She concluded that they were on two different paths and walked. Flaky Crosby resumed his usual pattern and proceeded to the next available woman…yoga lady. However, he quickly realised that the responsibilites of fatherhood required him to approach life more responsibly, and that was the end of yoga lady.
I agree that Crosby being in love with Jabbar does not automatically extend to Jasmine, but it shouldn’t
automatically exclude her either. Is there something with Jasmine, the mother of his child, that makes her an unsuitable partner? It is neither unrealistic nor impossible that he could fall in love with Jasmine and even want to marry her. Actually, i find it totally romantic and sexy.
Crosby is now at a different place in his life than 5 yrs ago, based on what he said in the birthday party episode, he would have stepped up to the plate had he known Jasmine was pregnant.
Crosby and Jasmine did not have an acrimonious ending 5yrs ago, they parted ways because she was temporarily dancing in the Bay area. They did not have the chance to take their relationship anywhere. Who is to say they would not have worked out?
This is their second chance at a relationship, and Crosby is taking it seriously. Jasmine gave Crosby the opportunity to consider whether they were just ‘fooling around’. Crosby made it quite clear that he had done a lot of research on that topic(in the past) and that he was not “fooling around” with her.
Are they perfect? Not by any means. Jasmine had serious trust issues with Crosby, her only memory is of a flaky guy, but i think she was more convinced that Crosby was changing in the last episode, hence the reason why she said that he was a ‘constant surprise’.
In season 2, i expect The Little Family That Could to work through a lot of issues and become even stronger.

  • Amber

Such great news! I’m really happy we’ll be seeing Jabbar. That little boy is so cute.

    • Bernice

Jabbar is the cutest thing. Love him.

  • Alexa

The problem with ensemble shows is that, no matter how well written and acted, there is only so much time designated for each character. I don’t know about anyone else, but I inevitably pick a favorite or three. Then I am disappointed when there is not enough character development.

    • Liz

I like the slow burn of an ensemble drama. I may be in the minority but I don’t like when shows are just ripping through storylines.

  • Kevin

Ugh. Why can’t the show just revolve around Lauren Graham and Peter Krause?

Erika/Julia’s family is so dull and Dax/Crosby is so cliche.

    • troia

gawd i was sooo praying they’d keep Jason Ritter on for next season….LOVED that chemistry between he and Lauren Graham

      • Tarc

I’ll agree with that. I think thye agree, too, but it will come down to whether Ritter’s pilot goes to series. He’s as charismatic as his father was, but he’s also charming in a way his dad was not.

      • Cat

It was announced a couple months ago that Ritter’s new show had gotten a pickup. It will debut in the fall.

      • Tarc

Ah, thanks. Then maybe it will die a quick death (like so many pilots do). :D

    • diggity

I agree that Julia’s family is totally boring. I like her- she was the reason I watched in the first place, but now I don’t care about her character at all.

I’m really happy with where they are taking Crosby’s story- I love Max’s story and Ambers.

  • Bee

    YESSS! awesome.
