Emmys 2010: How Glenn Close, January Jones, Julianna Margulies and others hope to snag Best Actress gold

ausiello-emmy-predictionsImage Credit: Glenn Watson/USA Network; John Paul Filo/CBS; AMC; Paul Drinkwater/NBCHow will the under-appreciated Connie Britton break out of the pack this season and secure an Emmy over two-time winner Glenn Close? Does Mariska Hargitay have a prayer against Julianna Margulies and her work on CBS’ white-hot The Good Wife? We found out which episodes the actresses — and supporting ones — are submitting for consideration. And in case you’ve forgotten how winners are selected, nominees send their episodes to a select group of TV Academy members who have volunteered to screen the submissions at home. (Nope, we never learn the identities of these mysterious, blue-ribbon panelists.) Ballots are due back to Ernst & Young by Aug. 17; the Emmys will air Aug. 29 on NBC.

After the jump, the list of episodes submitted:

Jones (Mad Men): “The Gypsy and the Hobo” (Don Draper admits to Betty that he stole Dick Whitman’s identity)

Britton (Friday Night Lights): “After the Fall” (Tami tackles a redistricting nightmare)

Close (Damages): “Your Secrets Are Safe” (Season 3 premiere, in which Patty kicks off her case with Louis Tobin)

Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU): “Perverted” (DNA links Olivia to the murder of a biker in Central Park)

Margulies (The Good Wife): “Threesome” (Alicia defends founding partner Jonas Stern for a DUI)

Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer): “Maternal Instincts” (Brenda and her team investigate a crossfire shoot-out and who intended to kill whom)

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama:

Christine Baranski (The Good Wife): “Bang” (Diane spars over a murder case, and whether a wife should testify against her husband)

Rose Byrne (Damages): “Your Secrets Are Safe” (Rose left Patty’s practice to work for the D.A.’s office)

Sharon Gless (Burn Notice): “Devil You Know” (Agent Callahan places Madeline under arrest)

Christina Hendricks (Mad Men): “Guy Walks into an Advertising Agency” (Joan helps visiting Brit after freak accident)

Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men): “Love Among the Ruins” (Peggy explores her sexuality)

Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife): “Hi” (Kalinda takes down Glenn Childs in court)

Connie and Julianna will duke it out, and both deserve the Emmy. I am hoping that Connie takes it, because she was robbed of a nomination in FNL’s first year (the scene of the discussion with Julie about having sex for the first time was stellar), but Julianna has been magnificent in a wonderful freshman show. Connie FTW!!

    • pop

yes! i almost started crying just thinking about that scene. it was so perfectly written and acted.

vI love younger men. I have dated only men at least 10 years younger and as much as 17 years younger than me for many years. I love the energy and a nice tight bod. Older men just aren’t the same, different mentality.lahh. I seem to have more in common with younger guys. They’re actually more fun and are usually more interested in me. I’m flattered. I think younger men like cougars because they have no agenda, don’t usually want to get married and are usually very independent and don’t need a man to take care of them. I meet younger men on this website:(10Year gap.com

Glad to see the Mad Men ladies getting some love, but I’m still woefully disappointed that Parks and Rec, one of the funniest shows on TV today, didn’t get nominated for best comedy. I’m also irritated that Big Love completely got the shaft. Even with the outrageous story lines, the performances were great. Jeanne Tripplehorn deserves an Emmy for her work on the show.

    • Carol

The performances on Big Love were completely overshadowed by the terrible scripts and the truncated season.

  • Stage Left

(Rose left Patty’s practice to work for the D.A.’s office)

I think you mean “Ellen left Patty’s practice to work for the D.A.’s office.”

This was a good episode for both actresses especially the montage in the beginning.

    • Carol

Oh, God – why did either of them get nominated for this season of Damages? It was terrible with a capital T.

      • Danny

Nope. It was on par with the first season. Try again.

  • Danny

Mariska was amazing in that episode. Last night, USA repeated “Undercover,” and her final scene with M.E. (in which M.E. asks a trauma-stricken Olivia if she was, indeed, raped, by the prison guard) … reminded me of the stellar acting on “SVU.”

    • T

‘Undercover’ was quite an ep. Mariska did such an amazing job that it’s difficult for me to watch that ep. To this day, I think I’ve only seen it twice because it was so real and scary. I can’t believe she didn’t win an Emmy for that ep!

  • Derek

I have to say…..these are the two categories that I care LEAST about. I think that it’s a weak year for actresses in dramas. I LOVE Connie Britton in FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, but I’m not up to the current season of the show to comment on her perfomance in the episode she was nominated for. I think that it’s a SHAME that Katey Segal was left out of this group. She gave one of the best female performances I’ve probably ever seen on screen this season of SONS OF ANARCHY. Maybe the voters have it out for her or just still have Peg Bundy in their minds. Her character Gemma couldn’t be further from Peg Bundy, which is why I think some voters were thrown off. She fully diserves to be included with these women and finally get the respect she dierves.

    • Tara

      Amen, Derek.

    • JR

Katey Segal and Ed O’Neill should give out the best acting awards the way Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Laine did at the Tonys. The pairs of non-a-nominated.

    • bhm1304

No truer words were ever spoken. January Jones is a Hollywood bed hopper who can barely deliver her lines and gets nominated but they give her the nomination for playing the poor little blond beauty queen wife instead of Sagal who busted her ass in a meaty role most of these women, couldn’t or would never play because its too against the norm. Ditto for Lucy Lawless this year. Both of these women deserved to be nominated this year.

    • Valley Girl

You are so right about Sagal – she was ROBBED of a nom this year. I just started watching re-runs of SOA and she is amazing. Alas!

  • Angie

The story lines are so out there on SVU so how does Mariska keep getting a emmy nomination? Dont say she is such a great actress becasue if that were true she would have other roles that just one(Oliva Benson). I know she was one ER back in the day for a few shows. Just asking…

    • GoMe!

Go on her IMDB page. She’s had a lot of roles. Lately, she hasn’t but that’s probably just because she’s busy as is. She’s probably not actively seeking out different roles because she just wants to focus on SVU for the moment. I personally have never seen Janurary Jones or Connie Britton in anything else but their respective shows but I still love them. Besides, Mariska was nominated for her role on SVU and nothing else. No one is saying she’s the greatest actor ever.

L love Mariska (and I’m probably one of the few people that was happy for her billionth nomination :)

      • nikkido

I’ve liked Connie Britton since she was on Spin City and she was great in 24.

      • Mark

Amen. Mariska is brilliant. I agree sometimes SVU has “out there” storylines – but then again sometimes they have very visceral, real, true-to-life headlines. Mariska is brilliant no matter what.

      • Jenn

January Jones played the bride’s sister in the 3rd American Pie movie. I don’t think I’m helping her case.

      • MMS38FAN38

I AGREE WITH WITH ABOUT MARISKA. I LOVE HER TOO AND SHE IS MY #1 FAVORITE ON SVU ANDI HOPE SHE WINS IT FOR A SECOND TIME THIS YEAR

      • UncleWalty

if you want to see great work by January Jones, check out a movie called “Swedish Auto”. You actually get to see her smile…she’s really pretty when she does.

      • went to the tailor

I love Mariska and I love SVU (no matter how inconsistent the episode qualities are). Perverted in particular was one of the best episodes of the season by far and although her work as a whole may not be as strong as others, the episode she submitted warranted the nomination. Maybe Katey submitted an episode that did not show off her talents (much like the cast of Weeds does every year).

  • shonna

I love the Good Wife and Damages but not as much as I love FNL! Connie deserves to win.

  • jfms777

Julianna was superb in that episode. Hope she wins.

  • Brad

    For my money:

    Actress:
    Britton>Jones>Margulies>Close>Sedgwick>Hargitay

    Supporting Actress:
    Hendricks>Moss>Baranski>Byrne>Panjabi>Gless

  • jv

Kathy, I still have that FNL scene on my DVR. We are saving it to reference when we talk to our kids about sex. Connie Britton acts the hell out of that scene.

  • bhm1304

The nominees in these categories blow. No wonder nobody watches the Emmys. January Jones “Best Actress”? Brother please….. she couldn’t hold a clip board for Katey Sagal “S.O.A.” or Holly Hunter “Saving Grace” or Anna Gunn “Breakin Bad” or Lucy Lawless “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”. Kyra Sedgwick, excuse me but “The Closer” has become a boring by the numbers procedural, ditto Mariska Hargitay’s nomination – for a stupid episode to boot. As for Margulies, boring role that has been played by a billion different actresses (nothing original here) and, the capper, it is just a boring procedural about a boring lawyer.

    What crap.

    • kmd611

I would like to see you do the acting these women do. All of them are incredible! Especially Mariska (love her) and Kyra!

  • Damon

These categories I could care less who wins..I don’t watch any of those shows..whomever the emmy’s choose would be ok with me..all I know is that Modern Family better win all they are nominated for!

  • M Weyer

Always interesting to see the picks because so often actors will make the mistake of sending in episodes that are personal favorites rather than ones that show thier best work. But Birtton’s choice gives me hope she might win.

  • Michael

How many people are in this select group? Is it like 5 or like 1000?

    • Michael

I meant the select group that votes on the Emmys [/clarification].

  • Marie

Sharon Gless picked the perfect episode to show. I’m glad Burn Notice has gotten so Emmy recognition. I hope she wins.
