The award will be presented for the first time in six years to Clooney on Aug. 29 during the live presentation on NBC.

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award goes to someone whose humanitarian work has brought credit to the industry and has had a lasting impact on society. Other recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, and Danny Thomas. Clooney remains committed to increasing awareness of human rights issues around the globe, from his mission to stop genocide in Darfur, to his efforts to quickly mobilize the entertainment industry for the America: A Tribute to Heroes in the wake of 9/11. Most recently, he put together the Hope For Haiti Now telethon.

“George was an obvious choice for this honor,” said John Shaffner, the TV Academy’s Chairman and CEO, in a statement. “He has understood and harnessed the power of television, the most powerful medium of our time, to reach into the hearts of people around the world and compelled us to action on behalf of those in sudden and desperate need as well those tragically oppressed in Darfur.”

Three cheers for George. What’s Bill OReilly’s take on this.

this just seems like a way to get viewers to me… the Emmys undeniably have big names, but George Clooney is kind of seen as the quintessential movie star… they’re probably hoping for a ratings boost
