Image Credit: Insidefoto/PR PhotosHBO’s star-studded Broadway-themed pilot The Miraculous Year has lined up another impressive name: Susan Sarandon.
The Oscar winner has been cast in the recurring role of Patty Atwood, the director/choreographer of the play-within-the-show.
Produced by Tony winner John Logan and Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (who’s directing the pilot), Year centers on a wildly self-destructive and manipulative Broadway composer (played by Broadway vet Norbert Leo Butz) who’s juggling both a challenging new show and his dysfunctional New York family.
Production on the pilot begins today in New York.
Year‘s impressive cast also includes…
* Hope Davis as Mandy Vance, Terry’s sister, a corporate lawyer.
* Frank Langella as Alex Segal, Terry and Mandy’s father, a world-class painter.
* Eddie Redmayne as Connor Lynn, a performer in Terry’s show.
* Linus Roache as Scott Vance, Mandy’s husband.
* Patti LuPone as Veronica, a Broadway star.
* Stark Sands as Duke Ellis, Veronica’s son.
* Elaine Cassidy as Brona McKinney, Terry’s assistant.
* Remy Nozik as Lara Vance, Mandy and Scott’s daughter.
* Logan Georges as Cameron Vance, Mandy’s and Scott’s son.
* Lee Pace as Frank Moss, Terry’s partner.
* Louis Ozawa Changchien as Tamil Lee, an art curator.
* Giancarlo Esposito as Harold Burton, Mandy’s boss.
* Karine Plantadit as Nadine, dancer in Terry’s show.
* Brooks Ashmanskas as Fritz, Terry’s librettist.
* Andre Ward as Mathius, dancer in Terry’s show.
* Erik Altemus as Brandon, dancer in Terry’s show.
* Daniel Davis as Frederick, Terry’s mentor.
Thoughts? Here’s mine: If this show doesn’t get picked up to series, there are going to be a lot of really angry theater fans out there.

More than just angry theater fans… That cast is fantastic.
Lee Pace opposite Norbert Leo Butz? How freaking cool is that?
I can’t even handle this. It’s too amazing.
HBO better pick this up. The cast alone makes it a must-see.
wow. what a terrible photo of susan.
What? – When I saw the pic, I thought, ‘Yeah – still ravashing!’

When I’d read of this show a few weeks ago, I thought that was about as amazing of a cast as I’ve ever seen. So what did they do? They added Oscar-level sparkles on top of the icing on the cake. I’m so IN.
Is that “partner” as in “romantic partner” or “composing partner, a la Elton John and Bernie Taupin”? Please please please let it be the former. I’d love to see an HBO show with a lead gay couple.
I think it’s pretty much confirmed that Butz’s character is a gay man. At least, I’ve seen it on multiple other sites reporting about casting news. For the theatre nerds out there, Guettel is writing the music for the play-within-the-show. HBO NEEDS to pick this thing up; the talent attached to this pilot is INSANE. Not only does it sound incredible and fresh, but almost like an edgy, adult “Glee” for the HBO set. Plus, it could be the new “Law & Order” in creating a sort of revolving door for Broadway actors to guest star…
Holy crap Lee Pace kissing Norbert Leo Butz… ooh that’s gonna be so damn hot. And “glee for the HBO set” somehow sounds misplaced.
I may actually get HBO so that I can watch this first run.
According to an article on Afterelton.com, the characters played by Butz, Pace, and Redmayne as well as the main character’s nephew are all gay – or at least there are in the original script.
I’ll watch ANYTHING Giancarlo Esposito’s in.
glee?
Sounds good on paper, but seriously? Will this really appeal to the average American TV viewer outside the tri-state area? Oh, well, I didn’t think Glee would make it either, so I hope I’m wrong again.
HBO shows do not need a large viewership to survive – it’s on a premium cable channel, and unlike network and basic cable shows, it has no commercials. As long as a loyal fanbase maintains its subscription to HBO, the show will be fine. How do you think shows like Arli$$ get to stay on the air for so long?
Believe it or not, there are many of us in “the heartland” who love good theatre. Look at all of the hit Broadway shows that debuted in Chicago. Hell, look at the Chicago theatre scene–Steppenwolf alone would make your head implode with the acting talent it regularly gets back to town.
WTF?! Giancarlo Esposito is on Breaking Bad….he better not be leaving it
That cast list makes my head explode with WIN. Lee Pace alone…..
Elizabeth, I know this must come as a great shock to you, but there are actually people who live outside of NYC who bathe, wear deodorant and understand/appreciate theater. I did community theater in small-town flyover country, and believe me: there are some themes that are VERY universal!
You should see the tears after each run of a well-performed Our Town, any place, any time. Some things are timeless, and theater is one of the best of them.
in future, Ausiello, it would be nice to mention in the article that the lead character’s name is Terry so we don’t get confused when you list the character’s in the show as “Terry’s sister”, etc.
Karine Plantadit?! How awesome is that?!
