Press Tour 411: Highlights from the 'Hawaii Five-0' panel

hawaii-five-0Image Credit: Mario Perez/CBSIn attendance: Hawaii Five-0 leads Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, and exec producers Alex Kurtzman and Peter Lenkov.

* Will the third time be the charm for O’Loughlin? Yes it will, predicts the star of CBS’ short-lived Moonlight and Three Rivers. “I don’t want to take anything away from the other shows I’ve done,” he quickly added. “I’ve worked with some incredible people.”

* Producers considered hiring a popular rock star to rerecord the iconic Hawaii theme, but they (thankfully) chose to work with the track’s original musicians instead. “You cannot change the original,” acknowledged Kurtzman. “It is the greatest theme.” And the best part? We’ll actually get to hear it! “CBS has been so supportive,” noted Lenkov, “with regards to us having a title sequence.”

* “He’s sort of the unofficial mayor of Waikiki,” Lenkov said of costar Daniel Dae Kim, who spent six years in Hawaii shooting Lost. “He’s been an amazing resource for us and opened a lot of doors for us shootingwise. He knows everybody.”

* Although O’Loughlin watched the original as a child, he didn’t want to step on Jack Lord’s territory. “I love Jack Lord’s McGarrett,” he gushed. “I love Jack Lord’s hair. I think he started Blue Steel, none of which I can get away with today.” He went on to say that his McGarrett will maintain Lord’s stoic quality.

I disagree about it being a hit. Remakes never make it and I read that this show is dark and violent. The casting is wrong. I am so not impressed with Alex O. and I can’t for the life of me understand why CBS keeps hiring him over and over.

    • Brandon

lol It’s not “dark and violent”! You’re taking one critic’s comment from TCA and running with it? The casting is top notch! CBS cast Alex O. because he’s talented, has charisma and is good looking. Most consider that a good recipe for success. It doesn’t happen for most overnight, in case you didn’t know.

    • Erin

The cast and producers are fantastic let alone the location. I’m giving it a go! As per Bill and Tattoo’s comments – don’t write it off until you actually see it.

      • kevin

Lame lame lame. using same names OMG how UNcreative. 3 weeks it will be gone. Shame…love hawaii too.

  • sam

I can’t wait to see it. I believe that this will be the charm for Alex. I just hope that they give him some good material.

  • mark in nyc

The problem is not the material, the problem is Alex. he can’t act. Now that he is on a show with people who can…it will become eveident very quickly.

    • Erin

I actually responded to this but EW ate my reply (thanks crappy site!).

I very much doubt you’ve even seen him in anything. I loved him in Moonlight but he particularly shone in Mary Bryant and in his guest stint on Criminal Minds.

  • J

O’Loughlin is a terrible actor. Why does CBS insist on giving him his own show over and over again?

    • Tattoo

actually, having seen Alex in several movies, he’s a good actor. I think he requires a good director to get the best from him. Hopefully that will be the case here.

      • sam

Yes, he is a very good actor. I am tired of the Alex haters jumping on every topic concerning him. What did he ever do to you?

    • MaryJane

Alex is charismatic. He has the charm that a great actor can have, but CBS screwed up on Moonlight, not giving it the chance to get known. If that show had been on the air even a year later, it would have been a hit. Three Rivers, I think, was CBS trying to make up for their mistake, but honestly, the writing was terrible and you can’t get away fro terrible writing, no matter how charismatic the star. I’m crossing my fingers for the new H5O, I loved the original, and I love Alex, so let’s hope that indeed, the third time is the charm.

  • Samantha

I’m really excited for this! I’m too young to have watched the original on TV but I love DDK and Grace Park!

  • Sam

LOL. They said the same with Three Rivers, it was going to stay for several seasons, but…A Hawaii 50 remake is a silly idea. Jack Lord was McGarret. No one else. This is MacGyver Hawaii. Lame

Hey, give the show a chance. If you try to ape the original, you lapse into parody. I’m rooting for it really hard.

  • Tattoo

Here’s a thought: Let’s actually give the show a chance! Let it air a few episodes before passing judgement.

    • Red

wait — that makes too much sense

  • Lorie

Fingers crossed for Alex and H50. Can’t wait for its premiere!

  • Johnification

I’ve liked the trailers and love most of the cast; I’ll be checking this one out come premiere day!

  • Carmen

It looks great! Can’t wait to see it!

  • jason

    They never should’ve canned Moonlight.

    • MaryJane

Exactly. CBS never gave Moonlight a chance to get known. Vampires are the “in” thing now, and if they had done the right thing by the series, Moonlight would be one of their biggest hits right now.

  • mary

I like HIM but NOT the program. It’s a NO for me!

    • Michelle

How can you know if you’ll like it or not?! It’s not even on yet!

  • Summer

I am curious to see what happens with this show. Loved the original and I hope they do it justice.

  • Honestly

Honestly, the people who go off about Alex O’Loughlin being a bad actor are basing their opinion on what? He’s been on a lot of casting directors’ lists for a while now, and it’s not because of his looks. He’s done a lot of less famous work I’m sure many people haven’t seen, but if they did they might change their mind. That said, I don’t know how people can objectively watch him in “Moonlight,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant,” “The Invincible” or even “The Shield,” and spout bad actor. It just sounds like people feeling entitled to an opinion that has no basis in anything besides their own mind.

    • sam

I suspect it is the same person posting under different names (including mine, by the way, after I posted a positive comment about him).

    • margreeda

He was really good on The Invisible. I love that film!

    • MaryJane

I also saw him in “Whiteout”, which they were promoting as a horror movie, but was actually a whodunit, and he scared the bejesus out of me. He is a terrific actor.
