Press Tour 411: Highlights from the 'Big Bang Theory' panel

big-bang-theoryImage Credit: Chris Lipson/CBS* A question about the cast’s ongoing contract renegotiations prompted leading lady Kaley Cuoco (Penny) to crack, “I’m doing next season for free.” All kidding aside, “we have a lot of people behind the scenes that we pay to take care of this,” she added. “That’s just the way it goes.” For more contract chatter, watch my interview with the cast at Comic-Con (embedded below for your convenience).

* Comparing Comic-Con to a pep rally, Jim Parsons (Sheldon) described Big Bang fans as the “sweetest, least psychotic people I’ve ever met.”

* “They’re very different people, so it was built into the characters that it would be difficult,” said exec producer Chuck Lorre of Penny and Leonard’s breakup. “It seemed natural that the relationship would come together and then fall apart. Maybe they’ll come together again. We don’t know.”

* Lorre’s reaction to the show’s move to Thursday nights this fall? “It’s a good thing,” he said. “Given where we are now after three seasons, I’d be crazy to argue with the choices CBS has made along the way. Our job is to make a good show, not program the show.”

* Wolowitz’s girlfriend, Bernadette (played by the hilarious Melissa Rauch), will be back.

* Is this the season Sheldon has some sex? Lorre teases that he will have a “very unique” relationship with Mayim Bialik’s returning physicist.

Coming up later today: Panels for Hawaii 5-0, Mike & Molly, and more!

Ugh, I couldn’t possibly care less about the Mayim Bialik storyline but the creators and writers seem infatuated with it. The audience never asked for or wanted a Sheldon 2.0 so I’m not sure why the show thought it would be a good idea to go there.

    • Jessica

She’ll probably end up being too neurotic even for Sheldon! I think it will make for a good story, and I’m sure it’s something they feel the sooner they can address (Sheldon’s sexuality) the sooner they can move on.

    • Liz

i’m excited to see it. I love this show and I’m not in it for some great storyline but for the comedy. If this show makes me laugh every week then I’m cool.

    • Sue1

Certain members of the audience have called for a ‘relationship’, and this may be the show’s way of showing just what Sheldon is and isn’t capable of.

    • Olive

It’s very interesting that the writers are going to explore an asexual relationship, which I don’t think has every been done before on a television show.

  • MC

Addition: Bernadette on the other hand, was fantastic and I’ll be very glad to see her back.

    • Sue1

      Completely agree with this.

  • Terri Lyn

I just hope that they get Leonard and Penny back together. It’s sad that evil WW got between them!

  • darclyte

    Curse that Wheaton!

  • mae

ugh, i hate character clones. i think sheldon is too unique of a character for someone to be almost exactly like him. that, and i want my Sheldon asexual. oh, and i can’t wait for Wil Wheaton and Bernadette to come back.

also, stop it with the romance that will never seem to work ( penny and leonard), bring it back to season 2 dynamics! i’m getting more and more tired of BBT because the writers are starting to annoy me with them.

    • Natallie

That is EXACTLY what I think! I`m specially happy about Bernadette`s return… I really liked her.

  • darthlapin

I dont like Mayim Bialik’s character at all, we did not need her.
The return of Bernadette is the best news I have heard so far about this show.
Im a bit worried for next season I hope they dont change the show to much because of all the success.

  • BrianOne

Hallelujah on the return of Bernadette! Am such a huge Melissa Rauch fan back to her days on Best Week Ever and am thrilled to hear she’s coming back!

  • LovelyDove

Ok,don’t kill this show by letting Sheldon have a sexual relationship with Mayim Bialik’s character. It would just kill everything we love about Sheldon’s complicated awkwardness. He’s great. Anway, someone as brilliant as Sheldon wouldn’t get satisfication with sex. Too mediocre and beneath his brilliance. :) I love Sheldon!

  • Noren

That’s fun, I’m a girl studying physics and was just aware of the fact that Kaley’s daily life at the set resembles pretty much my life as a physics student. At the beginning it’s so awkward to be almost only surrounded by guys, but then it becomes the greatest thing in life. She might know about it. :-)

I’m delighted Bernadette will be back and I think Wil Wheaton makes a great antagonist for Sheldon. I wish Leonard Nimoy would unretire long enough to guest star as himself. I like Mayim Bialik’s character and will be glad to see her again. Characters cannot stay stagnant; they need some new experiences and development to stay interesting. However long it lasts, this will broaden Sheldon’s experience.

    • Caitlin S

The thing with Leonard Nimoy starring as himself is that it is just TOO good to be true for them. They’d have nerdgasms and fall to pieces.

I guess it might be amusing to see just how awkward they could make a meeting with Nimoy be, though.

  • Molly

Ugh! Get Blossom away!! We’re just getting the last show in the UK now and I’m terrified she’ll ruin S4. Yeay ‘Sweet Bernadete’ come back. Shenny FTW!

  • Sue Davis

I am absolutely delighted to hear that Melissa Rauch will be back next season on “The Big Bang Theory.” She added a certain spark to the show, and I was disappointed when the break-up happened. I would love to see her relationship with Wolowitz bloom. Her comedic timing is amazing!! I’ve followed her stand-up career and enjoyed her from her days on “Best Week Ever,” and am thrilled to see her currently on HBO’s “True Blood.”

  • wooster182

Yay! What I’m most excited about is it hear that Penny/Leonard no longer sounds endgame. And Sheldon is getting closer and closer to having actual romantic tendencies. Pendon all the way, baby!

  • ryaneco

Big Bang as become to Sheldon-centric I love the show and he is a good source of comedy but I just feel like they’re overdoing it; like when the Simpsons were making homer dumber than dumb and Joey on Friends spinning off into his own horrid show; sometimes too much of a good thing is actually quite bad.

  • Ben

I can’t wait for Melissa Rauch to come back. I don’t know why we didn’t see more of her. She is awesome! One of the funniest people alive!!
