Press Tour Roundup: Nine things I learned during CBS' big day

tca-cbs-gilbertImage Credit: Robert Voets/CBS; Sonja Flemming/CBS; Art Streiber/CBS; Ron P. Jaffe/CBS* William Shatner doesn’t understand why CBS insists on “bleeping out” the first word of his new Twitter-inspired sitcom, $#*! My Dad Says. “They should [just] call it s—,” he cracked. “It isn’t a terrible term. It’s a natural function.” (Funny story: I’ve been referring to the show as s— ever since I watched the pilot.)

* Shatner doesn’t do his own tweeting. “I’ve hired a young man out of college,” the Star Trek icon admitted. “He does the mechanics, but I very carefully modulate what I say.”

* Blue Bloods, starring Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg, is more than just a police procedural. “It’s also a family show,” maintained exec producer Robin Green. Having seen the pilot, I can vouch for this.

* Mike & Molly, starring Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy, is more than just a sitcom about fat people. “It’s a show about people trying to make their lives better,” insisted exec producer Chuck Lorre, “and find someone they can have a committed relationship with.” Having seen the pilot, I can vouch…that it’s a sitcom about fat people. But it’s funny. And honest. And Gardell and McCarthy are fantastic together.

* Amid the flood of weight-related questions during the Mike & Molly panel, this one for McCarthy made me cringe the most: “Where are you getting Molly’s clothes? What particular designers or outlets?” (Note to reporter who asked said question: Please come to the courtesy counter to claim your Whatchoo Talkin’ ‘Bout, Willis? award.)

* According to Jim Just. Won’t. Die. Jim Belushi revealed during the Defenders panel that his new legal drama (costarring Jerry O’Connell) shoots on Jim‘s old soundstage. “I’ve got the same dressing room,” he shouted. “I’m so excited!”

* Sara Gilbert is a lesbian—although you’d never know it reading the press notes for her upcoming View-like gabfest The Talk, since they failed to mention her significant other even though her cohosts’ husbands were all listed. “I’ve been acting my whole life and I’ve never really discussed my personal life,” responded the Roseanne star. “This is a talk show. So obviously I’m going to be discussing my life more, and I felt that the first place I wanted to do it wasn’t in a CBS press release. It just seemed impersonal, and I felt like I’d rather come in person and talk to you about all that stuff here.”

* Fellow Talk-er Holly Robinson Peete announced that the one topic she won’t be discussing is her daughter’s menstrual cycle. She then continued to discuss her daughter’s menstrual cycle. In a room full of journalists. “I’m bummed because I think the stories of my husband dealing with this are priceless,” she said. “[But] she said I couldn’t talk about that.” And a promise is a promise!

* Want to piss off a TV critic? Turn the temperature down to 43 degrees and disable the wireless. And don’t do anything about it after people complain. Thanks, Mr. Hilton! (Additional reporting by Vlada Gelman)

10 bucks says William Shatner’s show bombs. Love you Shatner but no.

    • Stan

Should call it Shat My Dad Says

      • Jeff

No, it should be “Shat Shatner Says”

      • dipshat

If they did i could sue them for copyright.

  • garrick

Holy s–t! Sara Gilbert is a lesbian?

(I’ve only known that since Rosanne was on the air…and who cares anyway?)

    • Stan

      Holy Shat!

      • dipshat

        HEY!

  • Josh

“Funny story: I’ve been referring to the show as s–t ever since I watched the pilot”

This comment is full of win.

    • Zoey

Agree. The only worthwhile tidbit to come out of this article.

      • Kevin

Odds are that comment generates more laughs than the show

    • Steve

      Ausiello for the win!

    • Stan

      I can’t fit Shat here!

    • Julia

I can’t get Shatner. For me everything he knows is to say the name Danny Crane acting as some kinda lunatic.

  • Michael Collado

I thought the Sara thing was common knowledge. If I’m correct, her partner is CHUCK writing veteran Ali Adler who’s now writing for NO ORDINARY FAMILY. 2 kids.

    • ythu

Ali Adler is a lesbian? I did not know that. Good for her.

      • ?

        good for her?

  • Kat

I’d actually like to know where TV shows get clothes for their “plus size” actresses. It’s not easy for women who aren’t less than a size 10 to find clothing that is cute and trendy.

    • Gina

I agree – the shops around my area have really nothing for anyone that people consider overwieght. I would to know where to find some of those outfits

      • ythu

Try Walmart, all I see there are overwieght people, and they are wearing clothes.

      • smack

        try exercise

      • flutiefan

        you guys are rude.
i’m a size 7/8 and i didn’t see what was wrong with the question either. what’s the deal, Ausiello?

      • holly

what a dumbass question because plus size cloths are sold everywhere and shows use designers. In other words they make them for all actresses, moron

    • CE

You could always ask that column in that magazine, you know, Entertainment Weekly, where a show got a particular outfit. It would be nice to see questions about some of the normal-sized clothing on the shows! (Side note: are there REALLY people on this planet who want to know where they got a particular lipstick for a character on a show? I am baffled.)

  • Sam

I’ve also heard tell that Ellen Degeneres is a lesbian. And that she also has a talk show. Where she discusses her wife all the time. And that CBS should get over themselves.

  • Bardette

Please, Jesus, Ausiello don’t tell me you think of yourself as a TV critic.

    • Becca

      lol agreed

      • vech

        kudos

  • Alex

s-t bombs, and then Big Bang moves back to Monday where it belongs in an ideal scenario.

Mike & Molly…is the world ready for a sitcom about fat people? It might be a little adventurous for CBS, seems more like something ABC or FOX might attempt.

    Nothing on Hawaii-Five-O?

    • guilty pleasure

Actually, there already was a sitcom about fat people, and it was called “Roseanne”

      • Olive

And Roseanne is probably 10 times better than this show is going to be.

      • Liz

I miss Roseanne. It was so funny and is still relevant today.

      • Liza5326

I still watch Roseanne every morning as I am getting ready for work. It really is still relevant 20 years later!

  • TheDudemeister

So you need a college degree to be Shatner’s Twitter assistant. Interesting.

    • EssBee

I wonder how much that job pays.

  • Mikaylah

After watching the last episode of Rizzoli and Isles on TNT I wish Donnie Walberg’s new show doesn’t do well just so he can go back there. But not really. (But really). :P

    • Jessica

I totally agree. I didn’t want him to leave either. Sorry Selleck, but I want Donnie back.

    • Meredith44

Me too! I saw he was leaving and I was irked. My first thought when I saw this was “Oh, so that is why he had to leave.” I want him back!

  • Chappel

I wonder how long until Shatner says “Don’t tell me how to Tweet; it sickens me!”.

  • Betsy

*sigh* i miss the Press Tour Diaries.

  • CiCi

I get the feeling H-R-Peete will soon be labeled that new show’s (older) version of Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Someone you wish would just shut up and go away

  • STEFF

Michael– I totally don’t get why you were upset (so it seemed to me) about someone asking about Melissa’s clothing. As a size 16/18 girl, there are very few places that carry affordable and FASHIONABLE clothing. If I may speak as a representative of trendy plus size girls everywhere: It was a very thoughtful question. Please tell us what her answer was! We aren’t offended and really want to know.

    • Pam

      Ditto!!!!

    • flutiefan

same here. i’m not in the same weight category, but the majority of America is. it was a question related to McCarthy’s show and character (not to mention it was complimentary)…what’s so wrong about that?

  • KG

Can’t wait for Blue Bloods!!! It sounds like it will be a good show. Also, I LOVE Donnie Wahlberg. :D
