Ellen probably decided to quit when she heard they were thinking of brining in Jessica Simpson as host. If JS joins the show, it’s officially dead.

  • bringbackrocky

Hallelujah! Notice how carefully worded everyone’s statement is. This is allowing her to leave without making it seem like she was replaced. Let the clean sweep of the judges’ table continue.

  • Perkle

They should fire Ryan Seacrest and make her the host of Idol. If they at least replace Randy Jackson I might actually tune in next season.

A lot of people had the exact same thoughts. Degeneres would be a plus as MC – a job she has done and done very well.
Ellen would have also been a great choice to also do the preliminary interviews of each Top 12 in an objective, honest way that showed off the person. (Vs. the present system that consisted of Seacrest ignoring some contestants almost completely, while giving 25% of the time about 24 contestants to the Adorable Big Mike Life story. trying to get maipulative sob stories or a stupid label “HS student Aaron”.)
And subtracting the smarmy, slightly creepy, and always camera-craving Seacrest would be a massive plus. (Let him go to work harder on his 15-20 other gigs).

News they haven’t renewed the odious Kara’s contract as of press time when the news of the Ellen axe falling hit – is also good news. PLEASE let Kara be gone! Please!

Completely agree with all of your comments. Ellen would make a great host.
It’s clear that Lythgoe means business. We won’t know until Monday, but my gut tells me that we have seen the last of Kara.

  • Princess Adora

Woo-hoo!! Now we can go back to 3 judges!!!!

  • Annie

I like Ellen but not as an Idol judge. Personally I think the panel should consist on legitimate music industry persons.
I know Kara & Randy are in the biz but I am sure you get what I’m saying.
Idol needs to reboot for season 10 and start fresh…just my opinion of course.

    HAAAL-LE-LU-A! HAAAL-LE-LU-A! HAAAL-LE-LU-A!HAAAL-LE-LU-A! HAL-LE-LU-AAAAA!

      Against All Odds….HAAAL-LE-LU-A! :-)

  • Jen

    I’m actually surprised

  • Willow Rosenberg

That is what we call jumping off a sinking ship. It’s a smart move for her in so, so many ways

    • Jamal

She was the reason why it started sinking

  • Julie

She clearly wasn’t a good fit as a judge, but I’m still shocked she’s leaving already. No chance to work out the kinks?

    • petra

Think about that. Suppose you were famous but knew nothing about dogs and they stunt cast you as a Dog Show Judge.
After a miserable year of showing your utter unfitness to be a dog breed judge of place in show – what exactly could you do to persuade people that discovered you knew nothing about dogs that you would work out the kinks?

      • darcy’s evil twin

hey Petra – I DO show dogs, and I’m not sure a “stunt cast” judge would do any worse, LOL.

  • cameobrooch

Smart move. I like Ellen but not on AI. Lythgoe definitely needs to bring in a new trio of judges. Fresh talent judged by fresh eyes — that’s what the show needs to reverse its decline.

  • petra

Got to say good choice to dump Ellen. Though I would have loved to see her remain in a capacity she would have been very good at – MC-ing performance nights and sending the slightly creepy Seacrest puppy off to his 20 other jobs.

Don’t think the show should go “All Famous Celeb Superstar Judges!!” Because the show should still be a talent show focused on performers, not a panel of judges – people watching focus on contestants, not judges. They expect the judges to be good and entertaining..but no one was tuning in mainly for the 12 seconds of fine Cowell bon mots.
It would be like if the Olympics only had “Superstar female Skaters” on judging panel and professed that it was now only about the Great judges and kept cameras and comments on them vs. the young ladies on ice, and the judges clever reactions mattered more than the performances.

Idol did well when the main focus was on contestants and not on unknown Simon Randy or largely best years behind her Abdul. When they began treating the contestants as just an annual scenery change, did little to promote post Idol Careers and lavished most Idol revenue money on multi-million annual judges and MC pay – the show was on it’s way to trouble.

3 Megacelebrities – 3 Times Ellen!! Is not wise. Focus goes further away from performers and audience. Especially if they try a cloning: “Must be a pissy Limey, must have all the “bad kareoke” like lines, must dress in a V-neck, and be vain.” There is also the matter of how much a Superstar with money to burn will actually bust butt trying to be involved and show they care.

Best mix would be ratings poison Kara gone, One celebrity. Not a dinosaur celebrity. And Jackson and one unknown that have good chenistry with the celeb and will be around Idol so much of the week tracking how the performances are shaping up that contestants have to say “you are around too much”.

And if Randy doesn’t have the right chemistry or he can’t amend his work – his last two lazy cliched years he should be gone too.

If we are honest, both he and Cowell did little work in the last two years other than show up and act pained that they even had to do that to collect their 5-million and 45-million paychecks.

      @Petra – YOU AGAIN!
it isn’t necessary for you to continually use lots of words to prove how ignorant and narrow your mind is? You wouldn’t last two minutes in this industry!

  • Ren

Sorry to see Ellen go, but she did seem uncomfortable at the table.
Now, if only Kara will leave — that would be a big relief. Kara isn’t a good judge though she may be expereinced in music and have talent as a writer and singer, she lacks what it takes to encourage the contestants.
To Kara, it’s all about her and she lacks compassion that Paula had. Kara doesn’t possess the natural wit and humor of Simon who got away with saying bad things.
There’s many famous people out there to take Simon’s place. No one is irreplaceable. With Nigel back, I think the show will improve. But, most of all — Nigel — if you’re reading this: Get rid of Kara!

    • kahuna

      ITA!

    To Petra:
Good idea, I think Ellen would be great as the host of American Idol.
Didn’t think of that; you’re right!

  • naynay

My dream panel would be Elton John, Sharon Osbourne and Prince! They would give honest critiques and I know it will never happen.

    • CC

I love the idea of Prince as a judge!! That would be fantastic! And Sharon too!

  • tomm

Kara is smart and people just expect Paula to come back. Well, she ain’t.

Ellen at least told the truth, instead of some spin.

They should just get one more judge and keep it 3.

    • petra

I used an analogy of someone being named a dog show judge who knew nothing about dogs and how they perform to describe Ellen’s work on Idol.
Yes, such a dog show judge could be absolutely honest and say “I agree with 1st dog judge Randy that that was a nice-looking dog.”

As for Kara being smart. OK. But no one dishonestly played favorites and attacked contestants she personally wanted gone like Kara. Her chemistry stunk, and the arrival of Kara was when ratings dropped, and that was right from the outset in S8 (which lost more audience than S9) Her audience disliked her. Her insistance to producers that her own deep intelligence and biz savvy told her America really wanted uncharismatic solo-singer songwriters of the coffeehouse sort – went pretty sour.
