Press Tour 411: Highlights from the 'Dexter' panel

michael-c-hallImage Credit: ShowtimeIn attendance: stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar, and C.S. Lee, and exec producers John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, and Chip Johannessen

* Hall and Carpenter’s real-life relationship hasn’t caused any weirdness on the Dexter set. “I think from our perspective we met at work,” said Hall. “We’ve always been comfortable working together. And it’s nice to be on the same schedule.” Added Carpenter: “We have a lot of trust in our cast. Everyone is incredibly professional. When we’re at work, we’re at work.”

* Hall doesn’t advocate serial murder, but he understands the urge—particularly among Los Angelenos. “We spend time in traffic. We get that impulse.”

* RoboCop‘s Peter Weller will appear in eight episodes as an “ex-cop, cocaine-era cowboy kind of guy who gets into some trouble with corruption and ends up posing a problem for Dexter,” revealed Johannessen.

* Producers are ditching the season-long adversary arc in favor of multiple antagonists. “We wanted to shake up the single Big Bad [format],” said Johannessen, “especially in the wake of John Lithgow.”

* The theme of season 5? Atonement. “But the form that Dexter takes to achieve atonement is unique,” explained Colleton. “There will be different characters who will come in and interact [with him]. Different people help him along the way in different capacities.”

* Although Julie Benz is returning for the premiere, Rita will not be haunting Dexter as a ghost. “[Harry]‘s the only one with keys to that room,” said Hall. (Additional reporting by Vlada Gelman)

Michael Emerson needs to join this show.

    • bry

      i couldn’t agree more!

    • Ariel

      Oh that is truly Brilliant!!!

    • Melissa

OOH!! That IS a brilliant idea!

    • Ashley G.

omg, you took the words right outta my mouth! he would be perfect

    • Scooptress

      Blair,
That is about the most short-sighted idea I’ve ever heard.

      TERRIBLE.

When a character makes a big splash as Emerson did with Linus, you don’t rush him into a new persona.

      Think before you type.

The only people with less intelligence than you are the 4 sheep who parrotted agreement with you horrible horrible childlike reasoning.

      • Erin

Getting a little hardcore with your keyboard, there? You tell ‘em good.

      • Kara

I think Jeff Bridges should be on Chuck.

Cue verbal attack from Scooptress for suggesting that one of my favourite actors should be on one of my favourite shows.

  • Rodi

    Two words: CAN’T WAIT!

  • tvfan

I am okay with NO Big Bad, but the reason is not clear to me. They said – no Big Bad “especially in the wake of John Lithgow.”
Was the risk to Dexter (and family) too great or what?

    • kozmikg

I think they were worried about how to “best” themselves with a new big bad after one as awesome as Trinity.

    • eliott256

They don’t feel any Big Bad they bring in will be able to top John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer, at least not when Trinity is such a strong force on the show still (the murder of Rita and the whole Kyle Butler thing are both big things for season 5)

    • wooster182

TVFan, I assume they are afraid they can’t top the buzz that surrounded John Lithgow’s performance, so they’ve decided not to do another Big Bad season. But with Chip Johannessen at the helm, I fully expect the next season to return to big bad form with no other than Paul Johansson.

    • Ariel

John Lithgow is genius. I can’t imagine who they could bring in after him to be even better. He’s just a hard one to top.

      • aleksa

I think this is what they were getting at.

  • Sheindie

Trinity can’t be topped. Great idea to have multiple ‘bads’ – and OH YEAH … how cool would it be to have Paul Johansson! :D

  • Carla

Paul Johansson would be great! Also, I’d like to see Dexter wind up with custody of Cody and Astor along with baby Harry. It would be interesting to see Dexter’s relationship with the kids continue.

    • MamaDragon

That would be really cool, especially if they follow Astor and Cody’s characters in the same way as who Astor & Cody are in the books,,rather who they are becoming as of the third book.

  • Chelsea

    Nothing about Julia Stiles?

    • Austin

Gahhhhhh that is all I want to know!!! Who is she playing?!?!?

      • Craig

It truly is nothing more than a guess, but my hunch is that she’ll play someone that will help out with the kids. Maybe a relative of Rita’s, or just some random babysitter.

Although from the latest trailer it looks like Astor and Cody are loading up into a car, so maybe they’re going to stay with Rita’s mom.

  • Edward

I wish they could have a female baddie.A female serial killer would be something different.

    • Craig

We did have Lila in season 2, and I think most people found her annoying.

  • Jeff

Meh, killing Rita was a mistake and making Dexter a single father was worse. The writers should have just had her divorce Dexter and leave Miami. I don’t think I’ll be watching this season.

  • Craig

Glad to hear that Rita won’t be returning as a ghost… but am I crazy for wanting to see a Doakes ghost?

He could be a manifestation of Dexter’s guilt over Rita’s death. While Dexter works on a fresh victim, Ghost Doakes stands in the corner and calls Dexter muttering “Morgan, you sick motherf***er”.

  • Shelley

Great show and EuropeLover was very good
