'American Idol': Fox will take time naming new judges

American Idol fans will have to wait a little longer to find out how Fox plans to replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres as judges for the show’s 10th season. Though rumors about replacements hit a fever pitch on Friday – including one about how Jennifer Lopez had nabbed a seat on the panel – word is that Fox execs plan to stay mum Monday when they meet with reporters at the Television Critics Tour in Beverly Hills. In fact, a source close to the show insists that no deals have been signed with any new panelists.

Instead, Fox will just use the critics tour session to (perish the thought!) promote new fall series like Lonestar and Raising Hope. Stay tuned.

It’s about time that Fox saves face and pull the plug this once great show

    • JC

American Idol will never unless it wants to, You think People are gonna enjoy X factor with a host who is not popular in the US and panel of judges who are also not popular in the US (except Simon)

      • Matt

        JC- Probably.

      • Tom

WTF! Just choose the judges already!

      • Dave

Umm correct me if I’m wrong, but Ryan Seacrest wasn’t famous at all when American Idol began, and neither were any of the judges, except for Paula, and she hadn’t even been relevant for 10 years. I doubt X-Factor is going to have a problem finding an audience.

      • jas886

People don’t watch these shows for the stupid judges or the idiotic host. They watch it for the chance to see an extremely talented singer and musician emerge from practically no where and become a star. At least I thought they did.

      • du…

@jas886 But they need a good judge to help them do that. The judge is there to give them advice and to help them get better.

        Great comment!
I’d add after 2 years of phoning it in and giving the audience the impression that just lowering himself to be on Idol on TV was a painful ordeal for him – as ratings plummeted – Simon Cowell Himself and his 45 million annual pay were absolutely going to be on the chopping clock if he hadn’t quit.

Simon is quite replacable by any number of “witty, ascerbic judges” even ones that are prissy and deliver a snotty British accent Americans have been conditioned to feel inferior to since they were colonialist rabble subjects of the Brits.

People wanted interesting, if not “superb”, then simply interesting, entertaining, and sometimes unpredictable people who appealed to them singing.

Simon is God!!!! devotees may object…but even they were not watching an hour and a half hanging on the edge of their seat to hear one 8-second decent fresh Cowell bon mot the writers gave him to deliver, or some old Cowell-writers team stuff like “to me..(dramatic pause)..it was bad kareoke..”

      • please!!!

Please make text voting not allowed!!!

    • Tom

I agree with JC. I cannot wait for the X factor. They should cancel American Ido and replace it with X factor. That would be awesome!!!

To cute This Show Would Be A Great Lose To All Of Those Young People Who Have Great Voices But No Money To Get A Record Out There

      • DH39593

Why do you cap the first letter of every word? That’s a little weird. :P

    • Pipan

Stupid comment. Good or bad, it’s still one of the top-rated shows on TV and makes a ton of money. So apparently, lots of people still like it. If you don’t, stay off these AI message boards.

  • Bfleet

Looks like Kara Dia-whatever is gone, too. Per TMZ.

  • Brianna

Hurry it up! This is getting annoying. I’m starting to wonder if the wait is just so that they can get attention. It’s kind of rude, them having all these hard working music people running at their beck and call.

    • Joy

I think they are doing this just to get media attention. How ridiculous. They are lucky that we care enough to want a decent judge on the show. They better not end up surprising us all with some boring judge. I say four judges, just to keep it safe. If there is only three, that might be risky(you never know who they will end up with)

    • calistoga

      Brianna, Brianna, Brianna!
What are we going to do with you?
I saw an item in another comments column that you might be interested in…..
      For all you Jessica lovers:
Was taking Pop Quiz this a.m. and noted that below “You might be interested in:” was a pic of Jessica Simpson with her new “boyfriend”. At the bottom of the pic, it noted “Paid Distribution”. It tickles me to no end to know that she/Joe/her people paid the media to show this pic. What a famewh***!!!

      • Brianna

I ended up changing my mind. I prefer Jennifer. I thought Jessica was a great idea, but I’m a huge fan of Jens. J-Lo may not be the best singer in the world, but she certainly is a very fun entertainer. I knew there was something fishy about Kara. Remember what I told you? Now she got fired. Sources say there was a dispute and that Kara is now shocked.

  • gigi

All the drama will spill over into the season. I didn’t watch last season, not because of the judges, but because of the lack of talent. And speaking of talent and judges…can TPTB over at Idol consider Garreth Malone of “The Choir” as a judge? Just asking.

    • calistoga

I love that series and Garreth Malone. Both are so inspiring! It is positively amazing what he has accomplished at such a young age. Trouble is trying to keep track of “The Choir” since it airs on BBC America (I think on Wed @ 10pm). Its first run was in Britain four years ago.

  • Teresa

This is getting a little close to the wire, no? Aren’t they supposed to be starting auditions right about now?

    • calistoga

Round 1 of the auditions does not include the telecast judges. Those that get through Round 1 get call-backs for late Aug-Sep which includes the telecast judges.

  • whocares

I will name the judges. Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

  • delilah5

How about this “CLOSE THE SHOW”! STAR WAS BORN (ADAM)! SIMON IS GONE!
AMERICAN IDOL NEVER WILL FIND SIMON OR ADAM!

    • what?!

Are you out of your frickin mind?!?! Yes Adam and Simon are great-but don’t hail them as the two greatest people of the world! There are so many people who are born with too much special talent. Stop being so close minded and start living more!!!

  • amber

why are they getting rid of kara? she seems to be the only one who knows her stuff. ellen was never needed, and randy was just along for the ride.

    • kahuna

Because she is extremely annoying and fake.

      • Sarah

I think you summed it up about Kara very nicely. Even if her all her opinions were great, she would still be annoying and fake. I’m sure she’s very nice off camera, but she tried wayyyy to hard to get us to believe she and Simon had what Paula and Simon had. You just can’t force that. It’s either there or it isn’t. I don’t like insulting people, but good comment Kahuna.

      • she sucks!

It doesn’t seem like she’s nice off camera. She still seems to be too self centered. And in her interviews she talks bad about people. Kara just likes way too much attention.

      • James

Kara Dioguardi was the only judge on that panel who actually had any idea what she was talking about. She never tried to force any kind of bond with Simon, so that’s complete BS. In truth, judges should be there for nothing other than JUDGING. In that respect, Randy and Simon had no business on that panel.

That said, I think American Idol was set up really unintelligently. It lost my respect when Adam Lambert lost.

      • Alice

I agree with Kahuna, Sarah and she sucks!

      • she sucks!

James obviously was not a regular viewer of the show. Or he’s an idiot. Everyone knows that Kara went out of her way to get people to believe she was all cozy with Simon and was trying to fill the Paula void in that respect. So the only BS is YOUR BS, James. But your most ignorant comment, by far, was that Simon had no business judging. It’s pretty obvious that YOU have no business posting on about this show.

  • Jason S.

COURTNEY LOVE! COURTNEY LOVE! COURTNEY LOVE COURTNEY LOVE COURTNEY LOVE!

    • SandraV

Ohhhhh … my gosh I would love this.
But honestly she should judge a rock contest, or guitar playing instead of singing. But yeah I love her — she’s actually extremely funny and intelligent.

      • Jason S.

I don’t agree. SHe has good pop sensibility as well as rock. Her songs are very catchy. She would lend some much needed credibility to the show. And yes she is very intelligent. She is truly a music Icon. And she has the right amount od Train Wreck quality and could make for water cooler conversation. And she wouldn’t be afraid to say something sucks!

    • dctoronto

Good idea if she can keep her uhhh stuff together. It one thing to have a judge hopped up on pain killers. It’s another to have one stoned on heroin or whatever her drug of choice is now.

      • duranmom

Courtney Love as judge = FCC fines.

    • Aaron

      That.would.be.brilliant.

LOVE COURTNEY LOVE! She would be more whacked out than Paula and more brutally honest than Simon! Ka-ching!

    • Jessie

Yeah, Courtney would be great! Entertaining, smart, very qualified and would never be afraid to say what she really thinks.

  • Jason S.

J-Lo? Ugh! Can’t believe they managed to find someone with less musical talent then Paula Abdul!

  • jas

i can’t believe they’re talking about having nicole sherzinger as a judge on x-factor. she was terrible on the acapella show (i forgot it’s name, sorry). jennifer lopez will suck too. i wouldn’t mind keeping randy if shania twain and neil patrick harris were judges. i think the whole reality singing competition thing is over anyway, only a few past contestants can hold their own, so just let it die.

  • Becca

J-Lo haters back off! She doesn’t have a huge voice, but she’s talented and a great dancer. She knows how to entertain.

I want Randy gone, don’t know why they’re keeping him.

    • Chris

She’s a great dancer??? Uh, this is a singing show, not dancing. Hilarious! And “she doesn’t have a huge voice” doesn’t help either. :p

  • Daniel

From what I’ve been seeing and reading, the new judges are:

    Steven Tyler
    Jennifer Lopez
    Randy Jackson
(per blog.Zap2it.com and several other sources)

Nigel Lythgoe (from SYTYCD) is officially back as Exc. Producer.

Last position is up in the air but rumors abound – Bret Michaels (per himself and Parade.com), Jessica Simpson (per Ent. Weekly), Harry Connick Jr. (per Rolling Stone) , Howard Stern (per NY Post)

I’m not liking anything of it. It was tolerable w/o Paula, at least alot more comfortable as she like to coddle the contestants and not give bad reviews. Now, w/o Simon, I highly doubt it will last past the next season.

Have we heard anything about a new host or not? Ryan Seacrest is the best they have, wonder if he will bolt as well.

    • calistoga

IMHO, since Nigel Lythgoe wants a clean slate, he will get rid of Seacrest as soon as he can. Both Ryan and Randy are still under contract, so maybe hopefully they will choose to leave. That way, they don’t have to be bought out of their contracts. Kara’s 2-year contract was completed.
Also, IMHO, I think that Lythgoe agrees with most of the rest of us, that AI needs to get back to being a show of and for the contestants. So he’ll probably go back to 3 judges which will cut down the jibber-jabber. It would be fun to have Lythgoe sit in from time-to-time.
Would love to see Ryan replaced by Cat Deely or Nicole Scherzinger.

Last, but not least, we WILL have another great decade of American Idol! Our young people need and deserve this opportunity.

      • Daniel

I highly doubt we will see a decade of this show, but I do agree that our young people need these kinds of opportunities.

      • Tatar69x

Wouldn’t mind Lythgoe seriously looking about how the show has steadily progressed into more and more Seacrest. Until there is far too much of the androgynous punk.

        Seacrest overload.

Part of it is misguided producers and their deciding that any badly planned airtime – well, Seacrest will happily fill it.
But with 20 other jobs besides what he thinks is the Ryan Seacrest Singing Talent Show – you can’t get a contestant-judge exchange or a judge-judge exchange or a contestant exchange or audience member yelling at a judge without Seacrest signalling he wants the camera on him – then getting in the middle as the “questioner, mediator, peacemaker, etc.)

I think the show would improve if Seacrest’s airtime is reduced, if not eliminated.
My hope was that they would fire Ellen as judge, but keep her as MC for performance and special nights, get rid ofSeacrests emotionally manipulative and sob story focused interviews of contestants forbetter Degeneres interviews – and demote Seacrest to the half hour result night and doing auditions gruntwork interviews.

      • Jody

So much praise for Lythgoe but wondering if you watch So You Think You Can Dance. Nigel and company have ruined it this year. The judging is as inconsistent as Idol’s was this year and they ramble on and on. They pimp their favorites to the point of annoyance and seem to feel as though we tune in to hear their inane comments.

      • Daniel

Tatar69x – Well, if you read the article, Ellen quit. They did fire DioGuardi though. I like to see Bret Michaels as a judge rather than Steven Tyler, but Tyler needs a new gig as he has had health problems in the past.

  • Star

Wow when I heard the news that Jennifer Lopez was joining AI I alomost fell out of my chair! I love J.Lo, but this came from left-field. I think she’ll make a great judge though…sure, she doesn’t have a great singing voice, but neither did Paula and she ended up being a great judge on Idol.
My dream panel would have to be Randy, Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola. C’mon, it’s the producer, the singing superstar, and the music exec. who made it all happen. If those three join forces we will definitely find our next music superstar!!!

    • kahuna

Mariah Carey would be fabulous. That’s exactly the reason it will never happen. Afterall, idol is the show that gave Ellen a multi-year contract, while giving the panelist with the actual industry experience, a year to year contract. Whew! I wonder if that guy who made those decisions still has his job.

  • Maria

Wow, people complain about J Lo being a diva, don’t even suggest Mariah, with her ridiculous entourages, tardiness, and crazy requests. She’s so 1980. J Lo is way more down to earth, funny, and smart.

Bret Michaels, J Lo, and Randy (because we have to).

    • Pipan

Some of you guys are way behind on all this. Bret Michaels is out of the running. AI insiders have already confirmed that J Lo and Steven Tyler have two of the three spots if they want them. If they can’t sign J Lo, then Kara will be back. And if they can’t sign Tyler, then it will be offered to Harry Connick Jr. So forget about all the big names that have been thrown out over the past few days – Elton John, Justin Timberlake, etc. And by the way, giving each singer 1 1/2 minutes and then the judges 5 minutes, it should be the other way around. More singing, less judging.

      • Pipan

And Randy is locked in yet either, although right now the plan is to keep him. And imagine how tough it’ll be for Steven Tyler to work on this show AND continue the Aerosmith tour at the same time. That’s going to be very tough for someone with his health and unreliability issues.

      • Pipan

        ISN’T locked in I meant.

      • Lynn

I’ve been hearing the same things about harry connick getting it if steven tyler doesnt take it. and for sure, they need to let the contestants sing more and have the judges talk less! lol
