Press Tour Roundup: Ten things I learned during NBC's big day

tca-nbc-smitsImage Credit: Michael Caulfield/Getty Images; Fox* NBC’s promising serial thriller The Event—which features multiple, interconnecting timelines, stories, and mysteries—will not succumb to FlashForwarditis. “You have to go on faith that we know what we’re doing,” said the show’s creator Nick Wauters. “We will reveal as many answers as we can and set up more mysteries.”

* The two leads on J.J. Abrams’ new spy romp Undercovers are black. And that’s a pretty big deal, dammit! Showrunner Josh Reims acknowledged as much, although he insisted he did not set out to “revolutionize TV” when he cast Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

* Law & Order: Los Angeles won’t just focus on celebrity crime, maintains boss man Dick Wolf. To wit, one episode will delve into the dark and seedy world of surfing!

* The trademark cha-chings, don-dongs, boink-boinks—whatever you want to call them—will get ample play on LOLA.

* Law & Order: Mothership is dead. Same goes for Day One. Remakes of Prime Suspect and Rockford Files, meanwhile, still have a heartbeat. (If NBC bigwigs Angela Bromstad and/or Jeff Gaspin are reading this, please click here.)

* I was mildly amused by the Peacock’s India-set call-center comedy Outsourced. And judging by the chilly reaction the trailer received, I was the only one!

* I wasn’t offended by NBC’s India-set call-center comedy Outsourced. And judging by the harsh line of questioning during the panel, I was the only one!

* Season 5 Biggest Loser champ Ali spikes her specialty line of protein shakes with Splenda. So sue her.

* Jimmy Smits’ Supreme Court justice-turned lawyer on Outlaw is more Libertarian than conservative. I’m totally watching now!

* Jesse Metcalfe doesn’t watch TV. How else to explain the following comment the onetime Desperate Housewives gardener made during the Q&A for his new drama Chase: “There hasn’t been a show about U.S. marshals yet.” (Additional reporting by Vlada Gelman)

Racists will find racism in anything. OUTSOURCED looks awesome.

    • Emily

The movie it was based on was pretty good.

      • cvxvds

i am a young and handsome man from us.
i just wonder if i can meet a mature women here,
because i am at the beginning of my career and i need someone’s support..
        i uploaded my hot photos on S u g a r m o m m a M e e t .C’ o m …. under the name piccolo ,
maybe you want to check out my photos first!

    • Diva

HAHA I just saw the trailer for this show and this looks hilarious. I think it actually makes Indians look good because it shows they have a sense of humor about it.
Don’t hate the race; hate the company.

    • Cheryl D

When the OUTSOURCED previews came on, I felt so upset personally, and resented that anyone could find humor with this scenario. My resentment stems from when I received a call from an East Indian person in India who was representing the (American) company with my home loan. Absolutely everything about this call was insulting, and I eventually hung up on them. There is no way I would watch a show about similar scenarios and think that it was funny. I am not a racist, but I am an American first! To see so much of the money I pay out in taxes, interests, and products, go to support other countries is wearing on my last nerve!
Am I going to watch Outsourced? No way in h***!!!

      • james

man……. blah blah blah shut up!!!!!

      • KFed

Don’t worry Cheryl, the American companies pay those call centre workers almost nothing, so don’t feel like they’re “supporting other countries”, they’re not. They’re using other countries, and using desperate poor people. Feel better?

      • vader1013

if everyone is so poor, then in the sitcom I hope everyone is dressed in rags and has a cold bowl of porridge on their desk with flies buzzing around it. I hope they’re not all sitting around in spiffy shirts and ties with gleaming white teeth and Justin Beiber haircuts. fool.

      • Jay

Whenever somebody begins a sentence with “I am not a racist, but…” it means that they are. Nice try.

      • Diva

OH MY GOD people it is not that hard. Not every comedy show will make you laugh. SO if you cringe when you see outsourced or you didn’t laugh then don’t watch it. It is that simple. I don’t think The Office is funny (yea, I said it), but you don’t see me going around saying “The office sucks it makes Americans look like we don’t work all day.” The fact that it is a comedy should automatically tell you do not take this seriously.
If you laugh, watch it, and if you didn’t don’t. That simple.

      • Nick

Outsourced does look very unintentionally racist, and not only that, but unfunny and predictable as well. Ausiello should’ve pointed out that all Parks and Rec fans (which includes a ton of critics) are already down on Outsourced because it’s talking Park’s spot in the lineup. Though Outsourced looks racist as hell for sure and is worthy of its “chilly” reaction.

      • Joe

Those Indians playing the part didn’t seem to mind, why would you? It would be racist if it were non-indians playing the role of Indians in India(?)

      • jcjcjc

Cheryl, you do realize you should hate your mortgage company, and not the people making/taking your calls in India…? THEY didn’t move the company to their country…they’re just like you or me–they took an available job in their neighborhood. Come on.

      • flutiefan

“Vader1013″, you realize the cost of living is much less there than here right? So $5 an hour will go much further in India than in America. THAT is how those companies are able to send jobs overseas. The people there do not have to be wearing “rags” for them to be making very low wages compared to Americans. They do not have to eat “cold porridge” in order to prove their hourly salaries are less than ours. Their desks do not need to have “flies buzzing around” to show that they make very little money.
It’s all about COST OF LIVING, and how far a dollar can stretch.

“KFed” and “jcjcjc” are right on the money. GROW UP CHERYL AND VADER1013! Blame the *real* villains, not the television shows.

  • bubbatwo420

looking forward to The Event, heard good things. you double posted your review of Outsourced btw

    • gah

      re-read it.

  • giffle

Montanan’s do it in the Butte.

  • Kate

“There hasn’t been a show about U.S. Marshals yet?” …Uhh… In Plain Sight, anyone?

    • jessicab

“There hasn’t been a show about U.S. Marshals yet?” Justified, anyone?

    • Jennifer

      And Justified.

    • chris

and the short lived “karen sisco”

    • Lindsey

Which is Michael’s point about Jesse Metcalfe not watching TV…

      • Festus

“There hasn’t been a show about U.S. Marshals yet?” Gunsmoke, anyone?

    • suz

Plain Sight was my first thought. Love it btw. Whats amusing is that its on USA which is also owned by NBC Universal.

  • Rachel

    Gugu Mbatha-Raw is African-*English*, actually.

    • Jake

Thank you! Please Ausiello, let this be the last time you make this silly mistake. You are either trying to be politically correct or you are not doing your homework–either way you are WRONG. Gugu is British not American. Her father is South African– no need to just lump her in as being African. We know where she is from. You wouldn’t say Penelope Cruz is European you would say she’s Spanish, so why would you do that to someone who is from Africa. I’m a Canadian citizen and my family is from Egypt, and Egypt is in Africa, would I be an African American?

      • JM

Penelope Cruz indeed is European. Spain is in Europe therefore All spaniards are europeans. So Penelope.

      • brea

or better yet, we wait until the show comes out, see if its good, and if its good, we can debate idiotic racial politcs on a TV comments section then.

      • Coyote

JM: Jake’s point is that you wouldn’t say someone from Canada, America or Mexico is North American, would you?

      • JJ

        To Coyote:
Why wouldn’t they be called North American?
People don’t have problem calling others Asian, European, African.

    • Kel

Michael said “black”, not African-American. Where was the word “American” in the short statement above?

      • Jake

That was fixed after the reader comments. Thanks Michael!

    • Nick

      “Gugu Mbatha-Raw is African-*English*, actually”

And, with the exception of Jordana Spiro, the hottest woman on TV.

  • Alex

Outsourced and S–T My Dad Says are going to be the first shows of the season canceled.
Very excited for The Event though. I’ve heard only good things about it, and can’t wait for it.

    • Hannah

Let’s hope it’ll be early in the season so Park&Rec can return sooner rather than later

  • JRose38

Outsourced touches on a sensitive subject. No matter how funny or smart it is it’s going to go down in flames and be canceled quickly.

    • Trenton

Not if they outsource their ratings from India

      • mel

That is about as funny as I expect this show to be.

  • dvid

I dont expect much from anyone working at NBC anymore.
a rare surprise like community is good, but outsourced looks like them trying very hard be diverse and edgy. and jesse metcalfe is just stupid. chase will fail, since people dont like Justified or In Plain Sight for the stories, it’s the life that the great charecters bring to it. Justified wouldnt be justfied without Raylan.

Last but not least, Undercovers is just NBC jumping on the spy Bandwagon, and it wont be able to compare with burn notice or covert affairs.

  • dryedmangoez

I think what’s racist about Outsourced is America’s stereotype of call centers. In countries like India and the Philippines where there are plenty of call centers, they are providing people with honest work that they may not be able to find elsewhere. I do hope Outsourced focuses on that as well as the cultural aspects of it all.

And the show being “insensitive” to America’s plight. Give me a break. There are worse shows out there that are insensitive to anyone who is not swimming in money, scripted or not.

    • Unemployed

Sure, Honest jobs that should be ours. But since the companies who do this outsourcing are too greedy to pay americans a decent wage they outsouce to India so they can pay the workers a penny an hour. Yes, I find that so halarious to be reminded of that by watching a comedy. I was thinking of sticking hot needles in my eyes during the commercials just for giggles.

  • gear

the event looks cool, and has a great ad campaign.
and outsourced is trying to feed on americans anger with the economy and losing jobs, but call centers are annoying in real life, why do we want them on TV?

  • dryedmangoez

NBC has probably the most promising line-up this season, attempts at both mainstream and high concept stuff.

If only people would get over biases and the NBC-hate bandwagon and judge a show after actually watching an episode and not because of it’s network.

  • jess

The only NBC show I’m looking forward to is The Event. I’ve read Outlaw is the worst of the new fall shows.

    • gigi

Poor Jimmy Smits can’t catch a break.

  • Serial Lover

What’s wrong with Outsourced’s premise. It’s what really happening right now around the world.
My most anticipated comedy this season.

    • Diva

Same here I can’t wait until it starts

    • Unemployed

Yes so is war, poverty and death. Let’s make a comedy about those too.

  • Jodi

I’m super glad to hear that Outsourced isn’t looking too good, simply because if it gets canceled quickly…Parks and Recreation may have a shot at returning earlier than the spring! :)

    • tnsmoke

The only reason Parks and Recreation is not coming back in September is because Amy Poeler is almost 9 months pregnant and they couldn’t get any new episodes in the can till after the baby is born. Not NBC’s fault.

      • Joe

Umm…Parks & Rec filmed a whole bunch of new episodes anticipating this problem, so it actually is NBC deciding to bench it until mid-season

  • Mary

Outsourced looks…interesting but I dont think it’ll last.

I’m willing to bet the movie is better too.
