Breaking: Terrence Howard joins 'Law & Order: LA'

terrence-howardImage Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty ImagesI called it! Sorta.

A little over a month after I suggested Dick Wolf recruit Terrence Howard for Law & Order: Los Angeles, the Oscar nominee has been cast in the spinoff.

Here’s where the sorta part comes in…I actually recommended him for the role of lead detective Rex Winters (which went to Skeet Ulrich). The part he’ll be playing, however, is that of Deputy D.A.—a position he’ll split with Alfred Molina.

Corey Stoll (Salt) rounds out the LOLA cast as Ulrich’s partner.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? ‘Cause I’m thinking it might be time to hire, oh, you know, a female. Just putting that out there.

In other L&O brand news, Wolf confirmed at press tour this morning that attempts to relocate the mothership to another network have failed. In other words, it’s definitely dead. Post your eulogies in the comments.

From “Iron Man” to the 3rd L&O spin-off = brutal!

    • Janey

      Actually, fourth spin-off.

      • Rock Golf

        L&O
        L&O: SVI
        L&O: CI
        L&O: Trial by Jury
        L&O: UK
        L&O: Crime & Punishment

        So at least 7th.

      • MaryJane

        Rock,
        You forgot one other:

        L & O: Dead

Because that’s what they should do with this franchise. It’s played out.

      • Cheery

@Rock Golf, and don’t forget “Conviction,” the Stephanie March helmed spinoff for the younger set.

      • Stephanie T,

        There’s a UK version?

      • Siby

There was a french version too called Paris enquête criminelle or Law & Order Paris.

      • Cheryl D

        Rock,
        L&O: SVU, not SVI
But you knew that, didn’t you?

  • Kyle

The only way I’ll watch this is if another one of your suggestions, Ken Leung, is cast. Doesn’t seem like it’ll happen though; doubt they’d cast 5 men and one woman. Though it’s a great cast already, Leung is the deal breaker for me.

  • Brett

Well, this diminishes L&O:LA’s chances for success significantly.

  • Robert

How soon till we get the announcement that Don Cheadle has replaced him?

    • Gert

      Hahaha good one.

      • Tye-Grr

        LOL!

Made me smile, so thank you.

  • xsikal

As the song from Flight of the Conchords would say…. too many d**** on the dance floor.

    • m

aw. i miss flight of the conchords.

  • Jason Jumper

I’m just glad he finally came out of the closet and there is finally a gay actor on the Law & Order franchise.

    • Chaz Winterbottom

If this was true wouldn’t he be on Law & Order: San Francisco?

    • Cheryl D

Chaz, You were my hero, but this one is not funny. If Howard is gay, I couldn’t care less. He is a fine actor. Being from SoCal, I and my friends are so looking forward to the L&O franchise using our unique geography to tell its stories. Welcome to LOLA! We’re glad to have you here. There’s a few small pockets you might consider taking extra precautions, but still better than NYC.

  • mel

agreed. Howard is a hero to the gay community for his bravery.

    • Burt

I didn’t know he was gay. Good for him!

      • Jeffrey

He’s not. You don’t have to be gay to be a “hero” to the gay community.

  • USAmerica1st

HOWARD should not be splitting ANYTHING with anyone. We like Molina a lot, but this is another case of Wolf’s indecisiveness. Obviously, Wolf needed a black person (no problem) now he needs a woman (no problem there either). But to get the news, at the same time, that Wolf has given up on the Mothership is VERY disappointing. Howard is the ONLY reason this Nielsen family will watch this spinoff (that should not even exist).

    • MSR

Can you please watch Chuck, The Office, Fringe, and Bones too? LOL, thanks!

  • jfms777

Howard came out? Really? He has a reputation for being difficult. And so now he is gay AND difficult?

    • Sally in Chicago

He’s been married two times and has a batch of children…man is definitely NOT gay.

      • frost /nixon

bullsh!t!!! he is gay, so quit tryin to troll, Sally! go watch fox news or a mel gibson movie!

      • dru

Lots of gay men have married women and fathered children. Howard wouldn’t be the first and wouldn’t be the last either.

  • Sally in Chicago

TO is one my faves and I’m happy for him. He just got married, has a movie coming out w/ Jen Hud “Winnie” and this will be a steady paycheck for him and his family. Congrats!

  • drury lane

you act like being gay and being difficult are somehow related. I think he just likes to make sure his work is well received. and yes, he finally came out, although its been pretty well-known for a year or so.

  • xfool92

There haven’t been any women cast as yet because they have to be scheduled for extensive interviews on the casting couch. They also have to make sure that they are built just right, so a lot of measuring and modeling must take place.

So far, I think LOLA may turn out to be a joke.

    • jerzygirl45

So this will be the L & O version of CSI: Miami, then?

  • Cheery

Too bad he couldn’t have Forest Whitaker’s role on the CM spinoff, then maybe I’d watch it. Wait, no I wouldn’t, because CBS screws over their actresses.

    • bklynny

I hope CBSexist gets its karma with screwing over their lead actresses.

  • MTK

I am waiting for the day where Ausiello does NOT make a story about himself in some way.

    • frost /nixon

I’m waiting for the day when you’re NOT a gay-bashing p.o.s. just cause ausiello is different from you doesn’t give you the right to spew your hatred!

      • MTK

What does this have to do with hatred? I think he is a self-centered journalist. PS I am gay myself. And what does that even have to do with what I said? Your response perpetuates hatred and stereotypes because you immediately think what I said had to do with his sexuality. Stop taking life so seriously.

  • robinepowell

They might hire a woman to play the lieutentant/captain of the squad room, since they haven’t cast that role yet.

If they decide to have a District Attorney, that too could be played by a woman.
