'Mad Men': Will U-Verse customers be without their Don Draper fix?

Categories: Cable, Deals, Television, TV Biz

A contract dispute between AMC parent Rainbow Media and AT&T’s U-Verse could prevent some 2.3 million customers from tuning into the July 25 return of the Emmy-winning Mad Men. U-Verse’s contract with Rainbow – which provides AMC, IFC and WE to the broadband TV operator - expired July 1 but a contract extension was granted until July 14 so the two sides can iron out a deal. But talks have stalled, so much that Rainbow and U-Verse have begun warning viewers that the networks could go dark before Don Draper stages his comeback.

“It is troubling that AT&T is threatening to yank AMC, WE tv and IFC, and leave their customers without the hottest show on television, AMC’s Mad Men, just before the premiere of the new season. AT&T is acting in an aggressive manner that puts their corporate interests ahead of their customers,” according to an AMC Statement. “We are negotiating in good faith with AT&T and are hopeful that we can reach an agreement as soon as possible so that our viewers don’t lose out.”

U-Verse followed up with a statement of their own: “We’re willing to continue to work toward reaching a fair agreement, but frankly, we seem to be at an impasse with Rainbow so we’re starting to let customers know that Rainbow may force us to remove their channels from our lineup on July 14. We want to reach a fair deal for our customers that reflects our growing subscriber base and that reflects the appropriate value of Rainbow content. Based on aggregate data we obtained from third party industry sources and our own subscribers, some of the Rainbow channels are among the least-watched and most overpriced per viewer compared to other major programming providers. They’re also trying to force the renegotiation of a contract for one of their other channels that is not yet expired and force us to carry a new channel that wasn’t even formally presented to us until after the recent July 1 contract extension.

“We want our customers to know that we can’t and won’t give in to unreasonable deals that unfairly disadvantage our customers. However, if a fair agreement isn’t reached by July 14, Rainbow could require us to remove their programming to try to force us into an unfair deal. This is about protecting our customers and representing their interests to get the content they really want at a fair price.”

Mad Men scored multiple Emmy nominations on Thursday, including another one for Outstanding Drama.

Emmy nod lifts 'Old Christine' star Julia Louis-Dreyfus' post-cancellation spirits... a little

julia-louis-dreyfusImage Credit: Warwick Saint/CBSJulia Louis-Dreyfus may well be the saddest Emmy nominee in television history. The Seinfeld alum just earned her umpteenth nod for CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine, but she’s finding it tough to celebrate the victory while lamenting a crushing defeat: The show has been canceled. Yesterday the melancholy actress rang me up to commiserate and share a depressing update on the fate of her underrated series.

You must be experiencing some mixed emotions.
JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS:
Yeah. I’m just delighted with the Academy and less so with CBS. Today is a great day because it is very affirming, and it makes me feel better than yesterday. It’s incredible to be nominated, and it was just a shame that—well, I don’t know—CBS really squandered our show; that’s the reality. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' Emmy-reaction roundup (including the nod that made boss Ryan Murphy go 'Holy s#@*!')

lea-michele-chris-colferImage Credit: Carin Baer/FoxCo-creator RYAN MURPHY on which one of the show’s 19 nominations made him the happiest: “I was obviously thrilled for all of them, but the one that I was just like, ‘Holy s—, that is just great’ was Chris Colfer. I think that was such a crowded, difficult category with so many great people. And, you know, he’s 20 years old and this is the first thing he’s ever done. He literally got off a bus in Clovis and walked in, and we wrote the part for him. I was just like a proud papa with him. People love his character [Kurt], and I think it was risky for him to be that young and play somebody who was so forthright and out and proud and struggling and flawed. But he stepped into those shoes and embraced it and made it his own. I think that he’s done so much for young people and showed them so much.” READ FULL STORY »

'Big Bang' star Jim Parsons on his 'bittersweet' Emmy nod and those pesky contract talks

jim-parsonsImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSWith the cast of The Big Bang Theory in contract renegotiations—and Jim Parsons’ peeps possibly angling to get him the show’s fattest paycheck—the actor’s second Emmy nomination couldn’t have come at a better time. But, when I spoke with him, he didn’t seem inclined to use the accolade as a bargaining tool. “I cannot wait to get back to work,” insisted the funnyman, “and nothing but the fiery gates of hell could keep from portraying Sheldon again.”

Still, Parsons was bummed that the CBS hitcom wasn’t recognized. READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive: 'Office' producer wants Dwight to succeed Michael as boss

the-officeImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBCRainn Wilson failed to snag an Emmy nomination for The Office this morning, but he still has reason to pop open the champagne today: The actor has emerged as the odds-on favorite to succeed the departing Steve Carell as boss.

“I’d love to see Rainn Wilson in that position,” says coexecutive producer/costar Mindy Kaling, who snagged a much-deserved Emmy nomination for co-writing last season’s four-star Jim/Pam wedding episode. “Dwight has become so nuanced — you actually care about him now. I think if [we did a good job laying the groundwork] this coming season, he would be a fantastic boss. READ FULL STORY »

'Lost' earns 12 Emmy nominations, including nods for finale

Categories: Emmy Awards, Emmys, Lost

lost-the-endImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCThe executive producers of Lost still aren’t ready to reflect creatively on the drama’s two-and-a-half-hour finale (as if they ever plan to), but they had plenty to say about the 12 Emmy nominations it received today from the TV Academy. Besides a much-anticipated nomination for Outstanding Drama, the series also earned nods for stars Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, Michael Emerson, and Elizabeth Mitchell. The finale — which was simply titled “The End” — also earned nominations in the writing, directing, music, and editing categories.

“As storytellers, you rarely get to end a story on your own terms,” executive producer Carlton Cuse tells EW. “Most shows kind of fade away or drop dead. We finished our story on our terms. Let’s face it, there were very high expectations for how Lost should end, and for us, it was enormously gratifying that we were recognized for doing a reasonably good job of ending the show.”

Executive Producer Damon Lindelof was particularly surprised by the wave of emotion he felt when Lost was announced as a contender for Outstanding Drama. “I basically started to weep,” he told EW. READ FULL STORY »

'Friday Night Lights' MVP Connie Britton on Emmy nod: 'There must be some mistake'

connie-brittonShortly after Connie Britton learned that she’d finally scored an Emmy nomination for her impeccable work on Friday Night Lights, the lead-actress contender rang me up to share her reaction, as well as her feelings about the series’ imminent end. (She and the gang are—gulp!—just two weeks away from shooting the finale.) Now, I don’t wanna say she had to call me, although I did do everything but go door-to-door to ATAS voters’ houses to make sure they had checked her name on their ballots. Okay, she had to call me. There, I said it. Below, her thoughts: READ FULL STORY »
