Exclusive: Balthazar Getty exits 'Brothers & Sisters'

The Walker clan will be down another family member when Brothers & Sisters kicks off its fifth season this fall. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Balthazar Getty—who appeared in a reduced number of episodes last season—will not be returning to the show.

Per a B&S source, Getty’s departure was a creative decision. I’m told Tommy’s absence will be explained in the Sept. 26 premiere—which picks up one year after the tragic events of the May finale.

Getty’s exit brings to three the number of major cast members not returning this season. As you know, Rob Lowe (Robert) and Emily VanCamp (Rebecca) are moving on as well, although VanCamp will be back for a handful of episodes to wrap up her storyline.

Thoughts? Will you miss Tommy? Sound off below!

    First!
This should read “B&S the final season”

    • Joseph

I have to agree that this should be B&S final season before it’s too late.

      • nanda

it’s already too late. They should have ended it already

      • sallyg

im a lucky girl ,,i found my real l-o-v-e on

Tommy should have been gone a long time ago. No big loss here.

    • Strepsi

The weird thing is, he WAS gone! They convincingly wrote him out, he was gone from the cast, we saw him in Mexico, that should have been the end of it back then.

Meanwhile, if Rebecca is going, this leaves Justin room to be the new black sheep of the family — but they have to make him less whiny! I love me some Justin, but last season I wanted Rebecca to cuff him in the head… weekly.

    • Meli

Never understood why once he was gone, he came back. He never really was back, they should have written him completely out originally.

    • graeme

Agreed. This is not a loss at all. I’m just interested to see the huge change that B&S is gonna undergo this season with these 3 cast members gone.
In reality, it doesn’t matter. As long as Calista Flockhart and Sally Field are there, the show will work.

  • Jase

Good his character was boring anyways. His stories were always him doing something stupid like when he brought his daughter to Cali or ran away to Mexico

  • Michael

I didn’t mind him last year, but they’ve struggled to make him interesting thoughtout the run of the series. They could have kept him around for the occasional episode. I like the family dynamics when they’re all at the dinner table. I’m not, however, all that upset.

    • tvgirl48

      Agreed.

  • Rob

No redemption for Tommy. This is shame. When the show started I really liked Tommy, but the character like the actor really self-destructed. Too bad. :(

  • Chris

this show is dead, last season

    • frank

Show is the most overrated on TV. Let it die.

  • Janey

Man, this show just keeps getting worse and worse. It’s time to let it die.

  • brianR

The show will be dead by February.

  • eddie

Tommy: don’t let the door hit you in the a** as you leave- 2 years too late

    • SRose

@eddie: now, that was an intelligent opinion…sheesh!

  • Andrew

Really enjoy watching this show…having said that, the time jump did not work too great for “Desperate Housewives” IMO and I don’t know what it will be like here…but yes, I say goodbye “Brothers & Sisters.” This should, most definitely, be its last, shortened I might add, season.

    • Andy Bluebear

Actually, it did for DH. Many people, fans and critics, thought it re-energized the show.

    • Claire

Yes! I really hope it happens! Scotty and Kevin as the lead characters. Sarah, Nora, Justin and Saul could appear as guest characters for one or two episodes.

  • nodnarb

They should spin-off Scotty and Kevin to their own show… and be done with the rest.

    • Mel

ITA. I would love to watch a Kevin/Scotty centered spin-off.

    • Jen

      yes!

    • Steven

      DO IT ABC!

      • Lisa19

I fully support this petition. I love Scotty and Kevin. They’re the best!

    • Missy

      Great idea

    • Ele

      Wonderful idea!

    • Strepsi

YES! With Sally Field as the meddling parent, it would be just like a gay version of Frasier. Wait, that’s redundant.

      • Ronnie

        LOL

      • Linda

I Love Brothers & Sisters keep it going.

    • Em

      Yes, please!

    • Claire

I really hope it happens! Scotty and Kevin as the lead characters. Sarah, Nora, Justin and Saul could appear as guest characters for one or two episodes.

  • meowser

I know a lot of people hated the character, and he did do some really stupid things…but I kind of liked Tommy. He brought a different…vibe. He made the family less one-note. I’m sorry to see him go.

    • Em

The fact that a lot of people felt strongly about him – positive or negative – I think gives him some value.

  • hm

really guys? i didn’t think the show was that bad, i mean, its not HBO quality TV or anything, but there are worse shows out there…

  • Iakovos

I have seen every ep of B&S and have been charmed and disappointed. There have been so many tonal shifts and undeveloped and/or short-sighted plot turns. This may be the final season, but I will be sad to let it go. As for Tommy, his character was never fully integrated or used. There is room for a black sheep.

    • Zoe

WELL SAID…I feel the exact same way. Also: the writers could never find a way to keep the heterosexual relationships on the show stable AND interesting at the same time. See: Kitty and Robert, Sarah and 1st husband, Tommy and Julia, Justin and Rebecca. It’s not realistic that ALL of these relationships would end in divorce! (And let’s be honest, Kitty and Robert were headed there.) B&S could take a lesson from Parenthood in this regard.

      • MAS

Totally agree – they created drama by splitting people up. There isn’t one health male/female relationship on the show. And, three versions of the cheating spouse?

  • Sue

It seems the show has really lost it’s way recently. Last year’s stories were a disappointment all th e way around.
