Fox to 'Fringe' fans: 'We have no intention of screwing with the show'

fringe-jackson-torvImage Credit: Liane Hentscher/FoxDespite a dip in ratings last season, Fringe remains a key asset for Fox. That’s the word from the network’s entertainment prez Kevin Reilly, who sang the show’s praises at press tour this morning.

“We have no intention of screwing with Fringe because the show has been going great,” assured Reilly. “It really came into its own last season. If I have any frustration it’s that I’d like the audience to be bigger because people deserve to see the work.”

Reilly went on to say that “the first batch of scripts with the alternative universe” have been particularly strong.

For more from Fox’s just-wrapped exec session, read Lynette Rice’s full report in Hollywood Insider. And in case you missed it, my revealing interview with Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, and John Noble at Comic-Con is embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

        I’m good thanks :)

  • Tim Lade

    I love me some Fringe!

  • Gina-Renee

Love Fringe, but really? Seriously? The cliche evil-twin plot? Please move on. . . Anna Torv can be a bad ass as a blonde, I promise you.

    • Chif

Alternate universe Olivia. Not evil twin. Did you watch the show?

      • rerun

I think Gina just means “mirror image” as opposed to “evil twin”. But not sure if we should call her evil unless she kills a child. She’s just protecting her world’s interests.

      • Rally

Exactly and Joshua Jackson said in the SDCC interview, that they want to try and get the audience to care for those alternate characters.

      • Lora

Did Star Trek do the evil, alternate universe, timeline, twin, whatever storyline first?

    • Dicazi

Yeah, even Bonanza did the double bit, but so what? Watch Farscape; they cloned Crighton, separated the crew and kept it going the entire season. When 1 of the Johns finally died, I bawled like a baby. I hope Fringe puts its own take on it and does even better.

      • Jen

Dicazi, I <3 you to the depths of my soul for that comparison to Talyn-John. BAWLED like a baby doesn't begin to cover it! I plan to harden my heart against AlternateOlivia and Co. this season. I love our girl and her crew too much.

    • Chappel

She’s not evil She’s just drawn that way.

      • kim in kentucky

        good one!!!

      • HarveyTheComputer

Finally someone understands! Seriously, she trusts the real bad guy. The other Walter.

    • m.

As far as i understand, there will be no evil twin. Just different.

    • Jenns

      shes not an evil twin

    • Angelo

Only problem is that she isn’t an evil twin. If you watched the interviews, they are trying to establish both worlds as very real and viable places, to the point where you don’t view one as evil and one as good. Both worlds and both sets of people are making choices based on what they think it helping their world. Perhaps you should watch the show again and get a better grasp. Alternate universes do not equal evil twins!

  • CountryClub

Always amazed that Fringe and Friday Night Lights don’t do better in the ratings.

    • Kris

Alright- I have got to check out Friday Night Lights.

BIG fan of Flashforward and Fringe.

Somebody in the Save Flashforward campaign is a big FNL fan- and now a Fringe fan?

It has got to be decent!

Is it one that has to be started from the start?

    • HarveyTheComputer

Don’t wanna sound cruel, but Friday Night Light is…. well boring and cliché. A couple of teens playing footballs and making stupid mistakes. It’s a teenage shows like all the other teenage shows. I watch two episodes because my younger brothers love it, but… well I don’t see what’s so great.

  • Bella

    Wooo! Brazil loves Fringe! <3

  • samara

Gina-Renee, it’s not an “evil twin” plot. None of the alternate world characters are evil, and it’s not just about Anna Torv… everyone except Joshua Jackson’s character has an alternate. I for one am really looking forward to this plot line.

    • Rew049

Yeah lucky them while Josh sits on his butt and does nothing.

      • martisco

        Go away, GleeBee.

  • Eric the Midget Actor

Look for me in the second episode.
Signed, Eric the Midget Ack Ack-tor.

    • ythu

      Reason enough to tune in.

    • etm

I don’t watch the show, but I am definitely tuning in to see ETM! “I’m club-F’ing_footed”

  • GB

Thank YOU! Good news. i HOPE fox brass keeps their word….because Fringe….to me….is the best sci fi show of all time. The character of walter….played incredibly by John Noble….is the best sci fi character of all time…..well hans solo is…but walter is 2nd!

    • Fer Vega

I agree completely! John Noble’s character is the best of Fringe. Love the show, huge fan…I’m sure they will make us like the alternate world characters as well…. I just wish more people could watch the show, cause it’s really really great.

  • kirads09

“If I have any frustration it’s that I’d like the audience to be bigger because people deserve to see the work.”

EXACTLY! John Noble is an exquisite emmy worthy force of nature! The rest of the cast is fantastic. I don’t think the alt universe thing will be cliche in the least the way they are playing it out. Please just let the show keep going and don’t change a bleeping thing about it.

    • darclyte

The two universes is not a theme that has mass appeal. Unfortunately, too many people wouldn’t “get it.” It’s a very good show and John Nobel should get an Emmy, but like most actors on sci-fi shows, he probably never will.

    • Kris

      AMEN!

I am so glad to hear FOX saying this. The show keeps getting better and better with an adverse effect on ratings. So this is very relieving to hear.

  • deew

They should not have moved it to Thursday nite at 9. They are competing with Greys, Project Runway, Real Housewives, The Office.. They should have left it on Mondays following House. That was my favorite night of TV

    • Zoe

That was my reaction as well. Fringe did really well when it was on Tuesday night (its first year). It would probably do well M-W too. If Fox moves it into the Friday night death slot, we’ll know Reilly is full of crap.

    • EF

Fringe would be a great replacement for 24.

    • Lime

When they moved it to Thursday nights, I stopped watching Grey’s and The Office and watched Fringe exclusively. It’s so much better than either of those shows (and I count those two as shows I actually watch!).

    • LeAnn

I totally agree! I stopped watching it when it moved to Thursday nights because it conflicted with Grey’s and CSI. If they moved it back to Tuesdays, I’d watch it again in a second!

  • Bruce_F

“We have no intention of screwing with Fringe because the show has been going great” – Kevin Reilly

You know what would really screw with the show? Canceling it due to mediocre ratings.

So, don’t do that for at least a couple more seasons and it’s all good.

    • Ruby

You know what else would screw with the show? Moving it to Thursday nights, where it has to compete with the high-ratings of Grey’s and CSI. Oh wait…they already did that…

And they wonder why ratings are down.

      • Kris

        AMEN!

They already screwed it. The show did well in the ratings in season one.

FOX should realize the time slot issue.

    • Casey

Ha, exactly. You don’t want to screw fringe over, Fox? Too late. It’s just like you said, Bruce. All they can do now is keep Fringe on until it’s finished telling it’s story. You got that, Kevin Reilly?

  • Hayley

Maybe if the assjerks hadn’t moved it to Thursday night along with every other show on the planet, the ratings wouldn’t have dipped and might’ve actually grown.

    • Nate

Agreed. They’ve given the show a death sentence since they’re keeping it on Thursday night. We should be thankful to get this third season as it will probably be its last.

  • Jen E.

Great news for Fringe fans…but I must ask – where was this #$&*-ing benevolence and patience for Firefly & AD, Fox? They “really came into their own” from day #$&*-ing one.

    Sincerely, Still Bitter

    • znachki

Different guy at the top. Heck – Kevin Reilly gave Dollhouse a second season, when many would not.

    • Dicazi

I’ve been ticked at Fox since they cancelled Alien Nation after promising it was renewed. I have finally forgiven them after renewing Fringe.

  • Lindsey

Love this show. The hole once left by the loss of LOST has now been filled.

    • Ruby

Agreed. Thank God I found an equally amazing replacement!

    • Sadie

It’s a good show and I enjoy it but it has not completely filled the loss of Lost for me. Maybe this season will do it.

      • Kris

I am thinking this season PLUS the event- I should be good!

  • JMaG

I have a bad feeling they are going to mess this season up with this 2 worlds thing. Will be watching anyways..

    • CoDee

How could you even feel that way?

This is what the show is based upon and has been from Ep 01. The alternate universe isn’t something added, it is the baseline premise to the show. We were only getting the breadcrumbs at first.

I don’t know if you’ve watched Fringe from day one but that conclusion sounds like you haven’t. There is nothing to mess up, we are only watching it unfold accordingly.

      Just enjoy the ride.

      • kimbari

        You’re wonerful

      • kimbari

        I can so speel… honest
