'Terra Nova' debut postponed until fall 2011

jason-omaraImage Credit: Bobby Bank/WireImage.comFox announced today that we’ll have to wait a lot longer to see the next series from Brannon Braga (24, FlashForward) and David Fury (Lost, Angel): Terra Nova will preview for one night next May, but then bow officially in the fall of 2011.

Fox decided to give the time-traveling drama the same treatment it gave Glee, which was previewed last year after a May episode of American Idol and subsequently rolled out officially in the fall of 2009. The experiment worked: Buzz for the musical dramedy built over the summer and the show had an auspicious beginning.

“It was mainly due to the scope [Terra Nova] was going to take,” Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly told reporters Monday in Beverly Hills. “ We went into it knowing it was going to be ambitious. It really became apparent that we had to do this show right. We’ll have an enormous jump on the pilot, and on the marketing side, we’ll let people understand the show.”

Production on the Jason O’Mara starrer isn’t expected to start until October, and the producers are still deciding where to shoot the high-concept series, which takes place 100 years in the future and focuses on a family that travels back to the prehistoric era. There was some talk about shooting the drama in Australia, but the studio is also considering locales in Florida. The drama will have a heavy computer imagery component because it will feature prehistoric creatures.

Casting is still underway for Terra Nova. O’Mara (Life on Mars) will play Jim Shannon, whose family is part of a group of settlers who travel back in time. Meanwhile, the show’s auspices read like a who’s who in Hollywood: Besides Braga, Fury, and Steven Spielberg, other executive producers include ex-Fox Chairman Peter Chernin, agent-turned-producer Aaron Kaplan, Craig Silverstein (Bones), and Kelly Marcel.

Very interesting that the network is seemingly already marketing this show more than a year away from the debut. This announcement also tantalizes the show to almost make it appear like a movie premiere and will be curious as to how the Fox PR machine will continue this momentum into the paid marketing portion.

Fox did this with Glee and a similar thing with The Cleveland show. They said it would be a mid-season replacement show, knowing all the long that it would start the following fall.
I think this is just their strategy these days.

Glee is not that good of show i am just saying my oppinion

  • JC

This could work…of course I’d be curious to see what show it replaces on FOX.

Brannon Braga is the primary creative force on this show and he has yet to create anything resembling true quality. His involvement with 24 came at the end of the show’s run, not at its creative peak. The less said about FlashForward, or his Star Trek impact, the better. A who’s who of producer talent means the show will look great and be heavily marketed but, to quote America’s most well known hockey mom – it’s still lipstick on a pig if Branna is behind it.

I’m afraid this show is going to suffer the fate of either kings (long wait lots of anticipation and then it was killed by the network), or Day One ( long wait lots of anticipation then the show gets cut down to the point there is nothing left).

Flashforward and V did much the same thing….and see how well that turned out.

A show by the people who brought us SeaQuest, Star Trek Voyager, Flashforward, and the crappy final seasons of 24? Yeah I’ll pass.

  • J

I’m so glad Kyle Chandler turned this down. This is a flop waiting to happen.
