Press Tour 411: Highlights from the 'Glee panel

In attendance: Exec producers Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto, choreographer Zach Woodlee, music producer Adam Anders, and costume designer Lou Eyrich.

* Glee is going smaller in season two. “I felt instead of going bigger and over-stuffing it in season two, let’s go under it,” said co-creator Ryan Murphy. “We’re scaling it back and concentrating on the stories.” Supporting characters like Brittany, Santana, Tina, and Mike Chang will get more play and each episode will only contain four or five musical numbers. That said, Murphy isn’t doing away with the big-budget tribute episodes. Among the splashy installments planned: A Britney Spears-themed hour, a post Super Bowl episode (Murphy is in talks with a number of artists), an episode featuring all-original music, and a Christmas ep that will hopefully guest star Susan Boyle.

* Brittany is really, really stupid. “We decided she was going to be held back every year,” Murphy said when addressing the post-high school question. He also revealed that they have the first four years of the series with the original cast mapped out, but haven’t thought beyond that.

* We might be getting some Paul McCartney on Glee. Murphy received a mix tape from the legendary Beatle for consideration on the show.

* Brad the piano player is the anti-Gleek. “I’ve only given him one direction: You hate those kids,” said Murphy. “We have a whole backstory where he goes home and does voodoo dolls.”

* The title of the season premiere is “Auditions. “The idea is that even if you’re not in high school, everything in your daily life is an audition,” said Murphy.

* Hairspray director-turned-So You Think You Can Dance judge Adam Shankman will helm one of the first 10 episodes of season 2.

* Sue Sylvester is coming to a Borders near you. Will’s nemesis will pen her memoirs this season and the book will be available in bookstores.

Adam Shankman?! HELL YES. All-original music? HELL YES.

    • brandinb

Yes!! I second that! I literally squealed when I read “Adam Shankman”

      • Hannuhh

YES! Adam Shankman is amazing! And Beatles <33

  • Kiki

awesome awesome news !!! can’t wait for the new season :D

    • Willemenia

      YUK

  • Rachel

…so does that mean every member of the club was a freshman last season?

    • Kat

No, Rachel was a sophomore last season.

      • KT

oooh, good point. but if they’ve already got 4 years planned… surely none of them involve rachel being out of the club… so i guess she gets held back a year? maybe she spent too much time with the glee club and neglected her studies… :)

      • STL Gleek

To KT: I hope they don’t try to stretch out the kids’ time in high school. Some of them are already looking long in the tooth to be in HS. It will be 90120 again with the smart girl who was pushing 40 in real life. Remember head of the class, the kids were supposed to be geniuses but ended up HS five or six years. Love Glee, but please let it die a natural death or find new blood. I don’t want Rachel and Finn to come back as teachers like Screech in Saved by the Bell. Wow I watch too much TV.

      • McFudge

Or maybe every year of the show does not equal a year of high school?

      • Kizzy

When the Glee cast and Ryan Murphy were on Oprah a while back, Oprah asked what will happen as they graduate? Ryan responded, “they never will”!!!!!

      • Missy

notice that each season ISNT a school year.. so they could do MANY a season per school year, depending on how they wanna go about it. like they havent even completed a full school year yet and there have been 2 seasons, which could mean up to 8 seasons of glee with the original cast! :D

      • lalala

Quin went through a whole pregnancy though, thats 9 months, or at least 8, aka a school year..

      • graciie

@missy: there’s kinda only been one season of glee… that had a huuuuuge hiatus in the middle

      • Tab

There’s only been one season actually :)

Well… they’re making the second season now but who knows how that will pan out. They could go to regionals for the following year, making it a year per season… *shrugs*

        Still, I love gLee :D
But I agree with the comment about not over doing it. Yes, we LOVE the glee cast but they can’t be there forever. Sometimes, even really good shows, have to end.

I mean, look at Scrubs. Without JD it just didn’t work… so 2.0 was canceled… glee might go the same way in a few years.
Still, better to end on a high than trail off :D

        gLeeks for the win! :D

      • Lauren

i think they might stretch out the school years. like a season could be just their way to sectionals in itself, and then another season to regionals and nationals. ryan did say that brittany is really stupid and is getting held back every year, haha. but who knows, maybe they’ll all go to the same college!

    • Ruby

I think that at least the original full cast members of the students were all supposed to be sophomores, or at least when any of those characters were asked their age, they said 16, except Rachel, who is 15.

I don’t think any of them are supposed to be any older than that yet, cause they’ll try to keep them in high school as long as possible.

Which of course is totally ridiculous, not just cause of the actors’ real ages, but that we’re supposed to believe that not only are only sophomores in Glee, but that the quarterback and cheerleading captain were sophomores.

So Murphy and Co. already have three more seasons planned out? Since he already said -spoiler alert- that this coming season will include Nationals, it seems like they’ll stick with the one school year a season time frame.

So how do they expect to keep the same cast if the characters graduate? It’s already ridiculous on most shows when they come up with totally contrived reasons why recently graduated kids stick around town, and with a cast this large it seems impossible. As much as I would hate for them to have a mostly new cast of Glee members, at least that would be more reasonable and allow the show to continue for as long as it has viewers.

  • ljoljo

HAHAHA BRAD hates glee-kids!! Awesome :D

    • STL Gleek

Love that Brad hates the Glee Kids. Remember Rachel’s snarky line to Shelby when the sang Pokerface? “Oh that’s Brad, he’s always hanging around”. Would have been priceless if he said “shut and sing beyotch!” I’m just saying.

      • Courtney

        I laughed. So hard.

  • Fridge

My fiancee and I always had a back story for the creepy piano player (before we knew he was Brad) and it usually hinged around him being some type of pervert who just creeped around the school when he wasn’t playing the piano for the kids. I mean, he does look creepy. Love that is story is that he hates the kids.

  • steph

Now I feel bad for Matt, the only Glee kid who isn’t getting more story time :< But I love that Brad hates the kids. I really hope they don't overdo the dumb Britneyisms this season – I can see them getting old real fast.

    • shel

I still enjoy the Britneyisms, but I can understand what you mean–I’m very over the Sue hair jokes.

  • Becca

can glee please go away? don’t get me wrong – I’m a fan – but this show was much more enjoyable when people treated as it was, an enjoyable guilty pleasure which brought a smile to your face. now, everywhere I turn people are singing it praises like it’s the most defining and amazing show ever on television. it’s getting way too overrated and it’s starting to get annoying. i just wish people would calm down and start treating it like every other tv show, because honestly, glee is good, but not that good. i just want to enjoy glee without it being shoved down my throat every five seconds.

    • Chris

      nope.

    • @ Becca

How about we keep Glee and YOU go away?

      • Irwin

I second this TOTALLY. Sure it’s not perfect, but it’s he most creative show in a long time. Sometimes the story loses out to the music, but the blend is usuall fantastic, with some of the most amazing arrangements ever. Hopefully Ryan’s fine-tuning with less numbers won’t ruin that part of the show. I think it should be extended by a half-hour to allow for both – great music and more developed stories.

    • kate

Then don’t read every article that is posted about this show, just sit back and enjoy the show. You know it’s still so good.

    • Samantha

Gotta say I agree with Becca. I love Glee, but they’re just making it too big. I was very annoyed at the Tonys when they showed Matthew Morrison like 10 times on the screen and they gave them each their own numbers. Things like that bug me a bit. I’m glad to hear they’re gonna scale back a bit, that’s good. But a Britney Spears episode? WHY???

  • GLEE

Why does Ryan keep saying that we’ll only be doing 5 songs each episode, Thats the same as last year! The only time they sang more then 5 is the Season Finale and the Madonna episode!!! P.S can’t wait for Glee!

    • vicky

no in funk they had more than 5.
      1. Another one bites the dust
      2. Its a man’s man’s world
      3. Loser
      4. Tell me something good
      5. Give up the funk
      6. Good Vibrations

      • GLEE

Yeah I keep missing to add Loser because they only sang it for less than a minute! But other than that 90% of the time there was 5.

      • graciie

and in the vitamin D episode there were only 2 numbers… the 2 mashups

and i suppose you could count the pilot as having more than 5 since there were all those auditions, but they lasted like 30secs each

  • Willemenia

If Paul McCartney goes on that ridiculous show, I think for SURE he’s getting senile.

    • George

      Thank you!

    • Casey

I think he’s just offering up music but either way, he’s not senile, he’s smart. This show has a lot of buzz.

  • BlackIrish4094

I love some Glee but maybe Ryan Murphy needs to slow his roll a little. And the director of Hairspray, WTF cares? Hey Ryan, the show has straight male fans too, enough with EVERY gay icon having to get to work on the show.

  • stephen

Bette Midler as a guest… PRONTO!

  • Ana

so they can still have 4 more season and still be in high school… since there isn’t a clear passage of time. who is to say each season/ 22 episodes is a year… I mean GREEK on Family Channel does each season as a semester… perhaps GLEE is doing the same!

    • STL Gleek

Maybe in future seasons, but they had Finn go from getting pregnant to birth in one season er school year.

      • Angel

Finn was pregnant? I must have missed that episode! ;)

    • Jenny

Since they already had one season as an entire school year they probably won’t change the format, especially since -spoiler alert- Murphy or someone else on the show already said they’re going to Nationals in the second season.

  • Rita Shutran

Can someone PLEASE tell Mr. Murphy to check out Damian McGinty’s video of him singing “Mack the Knife”!!!! This young man is easy on the eyes, talented, and who can resist an Irish accent. His Celtic Thunder experiences only enhance his stage presence. Be Smart!!! Get him on the show!!! The ratings will skyrocket,I promise. If you want I will write the story for you!!!!!

    • Kathi

I agree completely. Damian is an extremely talented young man that through the years has not lost his talent while his voice changed. Glad to see he’s a finalist. Go Damian!!!!

  • liza

YESSS “Other Asian” gets a storyline! I’m so excited. But I’m even more excited for Shankman to direct an episode. Yeeee!!

  • jesse wickey

i am a glee i am a big fan of glee i love Rachel is is so nice to everyone in the clip
