Mary Hart to leave 'Entertainment Tonight'

mary-hartImage Credit: RD/Kirkland/Retna Ltd.Mary Hart announced today that the upcoming season of Entertainment Tonight will be her last.  ET will celebrate its 30th year on TV beginning Sept. 13. Hart joined the entertainment show in 1982. “I’ve had the privilege of spending 29 years doing something I love – how often does that happen?” Hart said in a statement. ” I’ve had the support of a stupendous group of people starting with Linda Bell Blue, John Nogawski and many others who are so talented on our staff at ET. I only meant to be at ET for three years, suddenly it’s almost 30!  I’ve reached a point when I clearly realize it’s time for a change.  There are many things I want to do in my life and I’d better get on with them. It will certainly be with mixed sentiments that I say ‘goodbye’ at the end of the season, but it will definitely be with a sense of celebration…30 years of Entertainment Tonight, are you kidding me?  That’s an accomplishment and something I’m very proud of!”

Blue, who has executive produced the show since 1995, also released this statement: “Mary is one of my closest friends and although I respect her decision I will miss her tremendously. Right now we are focused on making this next season the very best in her long history with ET. She will remain first on the red carpet for the biggest award shows and will continue to interview Hollywood’s top stars. We’re going to have a lot of fun this year!”

No decision has been made on who will replace Hart.

Wow, crazy news…I am shocked to learn that ET was still on the air.

    • Zach

Seriously, are you stupid? Get off your high horse. You’re on an entertainment website, so don’t pretend that you didn’t know ET was still on the air.

      • Michael

Chill out Zach, jeez!!! A joke gone bad does not deserve that.

      • Zach

        But it’s not funny…

      • Jen

I think Rusty’s point was more about how we no longer need to watch ET to get entertainment news. It is kinda amazing that ET and the like are still on the air when we have sites like EW, TMZ, and infinitely more entertainment websites of all types that are updated 24/7.

      • UGH

Are they going to have that hound with the huge mole replace her?

      • bootsycolumbia

No way, I’m with Zach on this one. Rusty was being a pretentious tool. You don’t have to like ET, you don’t even have to watch it, but to feign astonishment that it’s still on is just silly.

      • TAMI

Actually I didn’t know ET was still on the air. I haven’t seen that show in many years because my viewing habits changed. Thanks to the DVR and internet we can watch tv at our convenience. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve watched ET. After seeing this photo of Mary Hart I’m glad she had enough common sense to befriend the executive producer. 30 years is amazing considering the change over rate for that type of job.

    • Rusty Shackleford

Thank you Jen, it’s nice to see someone who doesn’t need to be spoon fed

    • Jackal

Wow Zach, take your ET a little too seriously?

  • Christian

    *Insert Seinfeld joke here*

  • Derek

ET use to be really enjoyable to watch. I credit that for getting me into entertainment and become a better more educated viewer. Then what was the pinnacle of entertainment news became the exact thing I was taught against and thats tabloid fodder and senseless television. ET no longer focuses on hollywood news and upcoming projects and scripts. what use to be a great show is a shadow of its former self. good riddance for mary hart staying on so long but good look to her future.

    • ZeeZee

I agree…I used to LOVE to watch ET but they are nowhere near where they used to be – a mere shadow now – now its all gossip and slander and beating a dead horse type stuff – not even journalism or news. SAD…now I watch (and love again) Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

      • Misha Lauenstein

I agree. When two networks announce their fall schedules and that night’s show opens with a shot of Linday Lohan, the show has become worthless.

    • Casey

Derek you state the exact reason why I no longer watch ET.

  • Fridge

I’m guessing Samantha Harris will replace Mary Hart. When they put Samantha on the show after she was dropped from Dancing with the Stars I figured Mary Hart was on her way out and Samantha would be taking over for her.

    • Zach

Too bad Samantha Harris is annoying at everything she does.

    • Zach

Well, I’ll be the first to suggest it: Nancy O’Dell as Mary’s replacement. Please?

      • Matt

YES!! Please put Nancy O’Dell on ET so she’ll be somewhere where I never have to see her again!

      • Sam

Nancy O’Dell is the ideal choice!!! Need to have her back on TV every night. Such a beautiful and classy lady!!!

  • klc

Maybe this explains why they’ve been pimping Samantha Harris so much.

  • Robbie

I’m confused. She started in 1982, is celebrating 30 years starting this September, and her last episode is…when?

    • Shannon

The article stated that the show was celebrating its 30th anniversary. She joined in the second season (in 1982), and will be ending her run on ET after 29 years.

      Hope that helps!

      • shawshank

But I thought she left the show for a while in the 90s?

      • Robbie

That does help, the article was too subtle about all that!

      • Aaron

It doesn’t have to be spelled out for you. The article said the show is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary and Mary Hart her 29th. That would make the second season her first year.

  • wizard62

Mary Hart at ET is an institution. Just like Bob Barker on Price is Right or Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, she devoted 30 years of her life to ET – truly an accomplishment, especially in the fickle world of Hollywood. Best wishes Mary and thanks for keeping us informed on entertainment news for the last 30 years!

    • Dinjab

Or like a mole that you don’t have the dermatologist remove. Or like a fat, diabetic gym teacher who must be retained due to tenure. Or like Pedro billboards on I-95.

  • jennrae

Samantha Harris is useless, dumber than a box of hair, and one of the most worthless ad libbers in entertainment “journalism.” Besides that, ET is unwatchable with all of the celebrity a*s-kissing it does.

    • Zach

The a-sskissing is better than what shows like The Insider and Access Hollywood do now (excluding the hilarious Soup), trashing celebs and having panel discussions at the expense of easygoing, good-natured, and revealing interviews with the stars like in the good old days before Jon & Kate and Lindsay Lohan dominated the airwaves for no good reason.

  • coolincanada

wow, so many negitive people in the world. I will miss Mary on ET. Good luck to her in her future. Good luck to who ever replaces her. Won’t be an easy job.

  • Ollie Stanley

I’m sorry — Entertainment Tonight is still on the air??

  • Veronica

    Wow…Is Entertainment Tonight still on?

    My bad…

    • Zach

You two are stupid. Stop lying

  • Hooper

You know what upset me about her the most? The press made a big deal about her insuring her legs for a million a piece with Lloyd’s of London and then the producers went out of their way to hide them behind smoked glass or a desk.
