Exclusive: Ryan Devlin moves back to 'Cougar Town'

Rising star Ryan Devlin, who recently lost his job as Shatner’s titular son on CBS’ laugh-challenged new fall sitcom $#*! My Dad Says, is poised to rejoin ABC’s Cougar Town this fall for multiple episodes, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Last week at press tour, exec producer Bill Lawrence strongly hinted in an interview with EW.com that Devlin would reprise his role as Smith, newbie lawyer and love interest to Philipps’ Laurie.

“We went into this year prepping for Ryan to be on [$#*!],” Lawrence told us, “so now we’re in the middle of trying to decide what we’re going to do. I enjoy him, so I think I want him to still be in our world. But I don’t know if [Laurie's] going to be [tied down] the whole year.” (Additional reporting by Vlada Gelman)

    Yay!

    • gah

that’s what i scrolled down to write! i don’t think that cbs show is gonna make it based on the clip i saw so good for him.

    • Tego Livi

The weird thing is that CBS has been showing clips of him in the promos for the Shat show; it indicates that they don’t really care who plays the son on that show.

  • Javi

    Yay x2

  • Kate

Love this news! I love love love Laurie and Davies, i hope they make him a regular he fitted in so well with the rest of the cast, i know they dont see him tied down but he could be like madly in love with ehr and (not in a stalker way) but never leave her alone or summit!

  • jordan

yay now laurie can do more first name-last name jokes haha!

  • McProphet

“I love guys with last names as first names!” Awww gotta love Smith Frank….

    • tigersmurfette

      isnt it smith jerrod?

      • tigersmurfette

crap, getting my shows mixed up. need sleep.

  • Bee

i wasn’t TOO wild about it him since he didn’t make me laugh much, but it’ll give laurie a chance to make some more funny jokes about him so great.

  • Ange

    Meh.

  • tvgirl48

He really grew on me. At first he seemed pretty bland, but some quirkiness and personality came out by the end. I don’t necessarily care if he stays with Laurie, but I’d love to see him around. Plus he’s really cute.

    • Becca

agreed. He’s a good addition and his father’s interactions with Laurie are amusing.

  • Brian

I’d rather they’d just found a role for Curt Spaulding. Or Ross Kidder!

    • Rangerette

I don’t know…I am thinking that Nick Telman should have a role too. Or they should just type cast Reed Timmer as a crazed storm chaser.

      • Brian

Also, Mrs. Westdorp. As a cougar.

    • Ranger-er

      What about Pat Seely???

  • jake

why did they decide to recast in the first place?

  • Lindsey

I confess – I only watch the episodes of this show that he is on… I’ve always liked him!

  • Alan Carver

Simply this actor needs to continue being on Cougar Town. I think that him losing his job at CBS was right – because they have a history of not renewing shows and making the investment to continue to make them a success! CBS loss is ABC’s GAIN!

  • Ed

Glad to hear this! I thought he was charming and quirky on Cougar Town, and I wouldn’t have watched that CBS @#%! show anyway.

  • lauren

Happy for him, but he’ll always be creepy Mercer to me! :p

    • Lola

The first time I saw him on Cougar Town, there was something about him that skeeved me out and I couldn’t put my finger on it, then I realized, it’s creepy rapist Mercer!

      • Anna

He’ll always be Mercer to me….shudder….

  • Matthew

Was this the blind item that you talked about earlier?
