Exclusive: 'Smallville' resurrects Lionel Luthor!

john-gloverImage Credit: Michael Courtney/The CWThis may be the closest thing to a Michael Rosenbaum comeback we get, so enjoy it people: John Glover has signed on to reprise his role as Lex’s late pa, Lionel, for multiple episodes during Smallville‘s 10th and final season, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Glover last graced the Smallville canvas at the end of season 7 when Lex pushed his father out a window to his death. (He appeared briefly in season 8 via archival footage.) The actor is booked for at least two episodes, both of which are expected to air in November.

Glover joins a growing list of Smallville alums rejoining the show in its final season. That list includes John Schneider (Pa Kent), Laura Vandervoort (Supergirl), James Marsters (Brainiac), and Michael Shanks (Hawkman).

Thoughts? Theories as to how Lionel will be brought back from the dead? Still holding out hope for a father/son reunion before The End? Hit the comments!

Smallville X looks to be amazing!

    • Jersey Jeff

If they don’t bring back Pete Ross, the whole season will be a waste. We don’t need that stupid Lex character, I guess the actor is so busy, whatevere his name was, and wahtever he is doing.

      • Brett

Seriously? The whole season will be a waste without PETE ROSS? Oh…I get it. You’re joking.

      • will

Lex Luthor is a main character. Even though I love Smallville, the writers and show executives have failed to replace Michael Rosenbaum, or a logical explanation of Luthor’s disappearance and his timely return. Perhaps and most definitely they better bring back Lex to tie loose ends, possibly when Brainiac returns to wreak havoc.

      • Kar

        Product Placement Pete? Seriously?

      • Kimmy

Lol at product placement Pete comment

      • Ian

Sam Jones III (the actor who played Pete, for anybody who doesn’t know) was busted by the Drug Enforcement Administration in a plot to illegally purchase and distribute over 10,000 Oxycodone pills. He faces up to 20 years in jail, possibly. Safe bet he won’t be making an appearance on Smallville.

      • ZmaX

actually, Sam Jones III is on a new show, so i guess the whole drug bust things wasn’t a big deal…ithe show is “Blue Mountain State” on Spike and what’s interesting is that Alan Ritchson (aka Aquaman on smallville) is also in that show lol

      • Vince

Him I can do without old news already and besides the guy always looks like hes pissed off

      • GentPC

Actually the whole arrest happened AFTER Season 1 of Blue Mountain State was aired and he has since been dropped from the show as a result of the arrest.

      • sunset

Maybe having Sam guesting once again, the writers will have a better story for Pete unlike his last one back in season 7.

      • crazyguy

the actor who plays pete is in jail for 20 years

    • cwswifty

Can’t wait to see season 10…but sad it’s the final season…would love to see lex come back !!

      • Gabe

GREAT NEWS!!! I wanna See PETE! LEX! and the Legion return! It be cool to see what happened to ZOD ALSO! KEEP THE GOOD NEWS COMING!

      • Joker-El

Lionel Luthor is awesome.. Can’t wait to see this episode.

      • Vanny

I Doubt you will see Lex return. Michael Rosenbaum has made it quite clear that he will not be returning to Smallville, as he will not shave his head again. If he does return – great, but he doesn’t seem keen… from what I’ve seen and read…

      • sunset

I’ve been wondering too why MR isn’t keen to return. I thought the Smallville set was a family sort of thing… wouldn’t anyone be happy to come back for a reunion?

  • Erik

THAT’S AWESOMELY GREAT! But, even so, Lionel Luthor’s not Lex Luthor.

    • Kimmy

Well since Michael Rosenbaum thinks he’s too good for Smallville, the return of Lionel Lutrher is the next best thing. Only hope Kristin kreuk thinks she’s too good too. The return of Lana Lang would only a romantic triangle angst between Clark, Lana and Lois. The Smallville writers don’t know how to write anything else.

      • David4

        Michael Rosenbaum is right.

      • Jersey Jeff

Yea, Mikey Rosenbomb can just keep do movies in drag.

      • Elle

Aww. I’d like KK to come back as well. The @&%?! writers need to fix the @&%?! Arc of Suck from Season 8. Lana Lang can’t be remembered as the most reviled character on Smallville. That honor clearly belongs to Chloe Sullivan.

      • Wilson

@Elle: Except that Chloe Sullivan is the best thing to come out of Smallville. She made the awful episodes watchable…I love that character, even when they didn’t know what to do with her for a season or 2.

      • Maddie

Nah. Chloe Sullivan is no way the best thing to come out of Smallville. Not by a long shot. Not unless you find boring, monotonal exposition amazing. Then yay! She’s the best! The most charitable thing I can say about Chloe is that she’s marginally less annoying than Lana Lang. And both Chloe and Lana completely sucked at being badass. Lionel Luther, on the other hand, rocked as the magnificent bastard!

      • Cal Vin

        My best male characters:

        1) Clark Kent
        2) Jonathan Kent
        3) Lex Luthor
        4) Lionel Luthor
        5) Pete Ross

      • Alterno

@ Kimmy, if he thinks that… he is right. He is too good for smallville.

      • Joseph

@ Cal Vin #5 should have been Jimmy Olsen!

  • celita

    Yay Lionel Luthor!

  • Cal Vin

Lex Luthor’s quest to seek an ageless potion fails, and he grows older instead.

    • Michael Sacal

Lex’s use of Rogaine shows amazing results.

  • Nathan

Awesome Lionel’s back. Glover was great!

  • Stevie P UK

OMG… this was such a let a down… I did a little wee think Lex was coming back and it was all for nothing!!!

  • shalimarfox80

Great news! This season is shaping out to be the best ever.

  • Tiva

That is so great that he is returning =)

  • A

    I want LEX!

  • KTC

He’s obviously back as Jor-El’s vessel, should be awesome!

    • GG

Yeah, but doesn’t Jor-El need a living body for a vessel?

      • SMVFAN

Maybe Lex “cloned” Lionel like he did Lana when she “died” at the end of Season 6. It would bean easy way to re-introduce the character like they did Julian. So Lionel may be Jor-El’s vessel again.

Please no Lana. After watching her acting. I could only tolerate her until season 4. Maybe have her re-appear as a memory so it doesn’t cause the triangle effect.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I’m happy that Lionel will be back but I still keep waiting for the day when Lex graces our tv screens again.

Don’t make me lose hope Aussiello!

  • lory

that’s amazing smallville rules can not wait for season 10 hope lex will be back soon too gla dthat lionel is part of the final season

  • Hour 42

We discussed this on Hour42 right after SDCC that Lionel was coming back. Wasn’t he shown in the preview of 10 at SDCC? I guess it wasn’t ‘official’ at the time?

    • Tucker

They put him in the SDCC preview (archival footage) in the hopes that they could get him back. They hadn’t even begun official discussions with him at that time.

  • robinepowell

Is this the season where everyone rises from the dead lol? First Jonathan Kent, now Lionel Luthor. :p

    • Kimmy

Well the pesky Chloe Sullivan refuses to even die!

      • Tricia

Good thing she didn’t! I just watched Smallville for the 1st time and I don’t think I could have made it through the Clark&Lana, Lex almost finding out Clark’s secret a million times crap they kept beating with a dead shovel in season 1-7. Chloe,Lois and Ollie keep me watching.I’m starting to like Clark more too now that he’s not such a wuss anymore.

      • Elle

@ Tricia. I’m the exact opposite. Chloe and Ollie together make me want to avoid watching Smallville more often.

      • Wilson

I am SO with Tricia on this. Although Oliver’s emo stage in season 8 was annoying lol

    • Brian

@Robin – you’ll notice that Birthday Boy Marsters is also back. Odds are Brainiac’s actually behind these “resurrections” one way or another.

  • Joker-El

HOLY MOTHER.. THIS IS AAWESOME!! This season will be full of memories.. I LOVE SMALLVILLE!
