Emmy predix: Best drama and comedy series

ausiello-emmy-predixImage Credit: Mike Yarish/AMC; Carin Baer/Fox; Bob D'Amico/ABC; Mario Perez/ABCWe’re in the homestretch! The 2010 Emmy Awards are this Sunday—my tux is scheduled to arrive from Filene’s Basement Paris tomorrow morning!—and I’ve got two categories left to handicap: Best drama and comedy series. BTW, my Schmemmy picks were 50 percent accurate, so I guess you can say I’m on a bit of a roll this year.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Breaking Bad
Dexter
The Good Wife
Lost
Mad Men
True Blood

The Front-runner: Mad Men. AMC’s crown jewel will almost certainly score a third-consecutive win, unless…

The Dark Horse: … voters feel like spreading the love to sister series Breaking Bad, which is coming off of its strongest season yet.

The Most Egregious Snub: Friday Night Lights. Voters finally got around to recognizing Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton this year, so maybe the show will finally get its due in 2011? A boy can dream.

Other Notable Omissions: Damages, Sons of Anarchy, and Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
30 Rock
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie
The Office

The Front-runner: Modern Family. In a duel between Glee and Modern Family, my gut tells me voters will side with the more “conventional” comedy.

The Dark Horse: 30 Rock. Was the season a little uneven? Sure. But technically, Tina Fey’s Emmy magnet only really needs six solid episodes to win, and the six she singled out were Rock-solid.

The Most Egregious Snub: Parks and Recreation. I guess I should be happy Emmy at least recognized Amy Poehler. Next year I won’t be so gracious.

Other Notable Omissions: Community, The Big Bang Theory, Cougar Town, Better Off Ted, Chuck, Party Down, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I think & hope you got the Drama wrong. Lost deserves it.

    • Casey

I think Breaking Bad deserves it but if it went to Lost I’d be fine with that.

      • Jersey Jeff

Since Mike can’t vote, I really don’t care about this.

      • Wil

Breaking Bad MORE than deserves it. Even Damages deserves it more than Lost. Lost was a wonderful show, but season 6 was just not on par with the other seasons, much less on the level of some of the nominated shows.

    • Lee

I’m with Cindy. LOST definitely deserves it. MAD MEN didn’t even come close to the brilliance of LOST last season. So Don’s marriage finally falls apart, and his wife falls in love with a man who can be her father. Big deal. Oh–and Don has to find a new job while he’s out looking for a new wife. It’s amazing how overrated MAD MEN is. It’s just a glorified soap opera.

      • Person Who Talks

That’s what I’ve been saying all along!!! I think all the critics love Mad Men and label it as “intelligent” because it is cynical and it posseses a pessimistic view on human nature. Meanwhile, all the “artistic intellectuals” dump on LOST for having an inspiring, optimistic ending. How sad…

      • hung high

you lost fans are lunatics. im sorry you wasted the last seven years of your lives on that show…it does not make it good drama

    • Stef

ITA. Really hope Lost gets it. Not that the other shows are deserving, but Lost is (was) my favorite show and I’d love to see it get some recognition for a fantastic season and run.

      • Stef

        whoops, meant “aren’t.”

    • Vince from NYC

Yup.. Anything other than Lost would make me mad.. I’ve never seen Mad Men.. One day I’ll catch up, but comon, It has 2 and has time to win more.. Lost deserves to be recognized for it’s greatness this year.

      • Steph

OK, I love me some Lost, but other season’s deserved the Emmy. This last one was weak. Whereas, both Breaking Bad and Mad Men are consistently amazing. Seriously, AMC is never off point.

      • Juneau

Totally agree with Steph. I was a rabid LOST fan until this last season. This once brilliant series ended so badly that I’m now wishing I’d never bothered to buy the other seasons on DVD. Mad Men, on the other hand, could never disappoint the way the last season of LOST did (mainly because the writers would never paint themselves in a corner the way Lost did). I’d put Breaking Bad and Dexter ahead of Lost, too, and I’d be happy if any of those 3 shows won (MM, BB, Dex). If Lost wins, the Emmy means nothing.

      • wha

It’s likely gonna come down to Mad Men vs Lost.

While the series finale was a bit weak I think the episode was impacting enough that it will be a strong contender.

    • Anna

LOST absolutely deserves to win best drama! That would make me so happy. Last season was fantastic so I really hope it wins. From what I have heard seems like Mad Men is a little over rated, but I have never seen it. I love Lost so much! Go LOST for all the wins!!!!

    • atlantisguy76

Go Chuck go!! They don’t fit in any completely, but they deserve something for getting a fourth season when a third was all but a miracle. The fans deserve an Emmy.

    • srfhy

I know we women have lots of standards to pick up a man, and there’s one website that can almost meet all our different demands:
(((( M-E-E-T-R-I-C-H-E-S . c-0-m )))) my sisiter told me this; it worked for her, it worked for me; and i’m sure it’s gonna work for u, buddy!!

      fan love it.

    • elizabeth

Lost’s unsatisfying conclusion should bar from any consideration for anything.

    • Renee

I want The Good Wife! And a win for Julianna too.

    • jules

Agreed. And I really hope that the show is recognized for its final season. Mad Men will be back next year.

    • JN

      The. Good. Wife.

  • Kris

I hope Glee wins but my gut tells me you’re right. I’m hoping Glee rocks the acting categories however, they deserve it more.

    • beth

I agree with Mr Ausiello. Modern Family should take it. After them both being gone all summer I truly only am waiting for Modern Family to come back, not GLEE. I’m not on the GLEE train anymore. It is a cute show, not Emmy worthy.

      • beth

forgot to add: Glee had some major continuity issues among other things so I have a hard time deeming it Emmy worthy when a lot of its execution is off…but I do love the songs. They should just stick to the songs.

      • MSR

I feel the same way. Modern Family and The Office are the only shows on my mind right now. Cannot wait for the new seasons!

      • DB

Modern Family totally should win. Glee got the musical/comedy Golden Globe already. Plus, Modern Family had a consistently funny first season. Glee, not so much, sure the music was mostly great, story-wise, very uneven.

      • jenn

I am just the opposite. I watched the first 6 episodes of Modern Family and then got bored with it. I can’t wait for Glee to return.

    • Kaye

I actually love both shows. I would be thrilled if Modern Family won best comedy, and Lea Michelle took home best actress in a comedy.

  • Erica

I hope True Blood shocks everyone and wins, but I bet Lost will win and I think Modern Family will win best Comedy

    • jodipo

I hope true blood gets canceled, and f it won best drama I would be shocked… in a really bad way.

      • lafemmemili

Then here goes for hoping u to get shock…ina really bad way. stop hating dont like it, dont watch it.

  • ingrid

oh lost. please lost. lost lost lost.

    and 30 rock.

  • Jenny

Dexter and Breaking Bad are the only two that deserve to be in best drama. Both had the best two seasons of any show on air. In my craziest wishful scenario, I wish both would tie for best drama.

    • mads

I totally agree about Dexter. I’m really hoping that Michael is wrong and Emmy voters finally decide to give Dexter the Emmy they deserve. This was their best season thus far.

    • Alexandru

Yes,yes and yes. In my craziest wishful scenario, I also wish both would tie for best drama. And best actor in a drama too. But if Dexter doesn’t win for best drama and Breaking bad does, then Michael C. Hall definitely deserves to take the emmy. Bryan Cranston has got too many already. And also, I don’t think Bryan Cranston will win three times in a row.

  • CHI CHI

i think you are delusional. Lost does not deserve an emmy…period.

    • Michael

Or could you be delusional in thinking that your opinion is the only one that counts?

      • Jersey Jeff

        You tell him Mike

      • Wil

My opinion may not be the only one that counts, but I agree with CHI CHI. Dexter, Breaking Bad, and several shows that weren’t nominated were better than Lost this year.

  • Clayton

I’m hoping for Lost and Modern Family

  • Bellie

I hope Breaking Bad wins Best Drama. And ugh, Modern Family is so overrated. So is Glee. The Office was terrible this past season. Neither of my favorite comedies were even nominated (Parks & Recreation and Party Down).

    • paul

you’re not the only one who thinks modern family is overrated. i stopped watching it after i got tired of the confessionals. for a show that’s on for only 22 minutes and to contain at least 5 minutes of confessionals–that means there is actually only 17 minutes of comedy. no way will modern family win.

      • K

Part of your problem may be that you’re paying too much attention to the time and not catching all the jokes. Modern Family is great. I don’t know if overrated, it’s just getting a lot of attention because it’s a family comedy where most of the single family shows have been workplace based so it’s different in that way.

      • MC

The confessionals contain comedy. Are you sure you’ve actually watched the show?

    • Stef

RIGHT ON about Parks and Rec and Party Down. Very bitter about those two being left off the list. Parks and Rec was definitely the most improved AND most consistent in its category. And Party Down just always gets the shaft doesn’t it? What a waste of a lovely gem of a show…sigh.

  • Sandra

I HOPE Breaking Bad & Modern Family win. But I think either Mad Men or The Good Wife will win drama. Modern Family definitely has a change at Comedy, but I fear that 30 Rock will win again.

And even though I have nothing really against Glee, it is not a funny show, and sue me for thinking that the best comedy should be sort of funny.

    • Woot

Okay I’m taking you court! Seriously though, Glee is funny, just not as constantly funny as the other nominees.

      • Che

Yes, Glee is not even full comedy full drama a cute mix thats all, Modern Family on the other hand is great and very funny and if 30 Rock wins again I will be very disappointed. And for drama I hope The Good Wife takes the crown

    • ugo

i love glee, but the only truly amusing aspect of that show is jane lynch. i dont understand why lea michele was even nominated.

      • sam

have you not paid attention to the girl’s facial expressions? comedy gold.
go watch her scene before they do the girl’s mash-up in Vitamin D-she’s hilarious.

    • Tim

No need to fear a ’30 Rock’ win. It’s still the funniest of the lot, but it’s also trophy-ed 3 times already. ‘Parks & Rec’ is most improved – hands down. ‘Modern Family’ is vastly more deserving than the overrated and overbaked ‘Glee’ – which is really anything but funny.

      Drama? Anyone’s guess…

  • SAM

I totally agree with you. Friday Night Lights is like 3 years overdue.

    • Kathy

      So VERY true!!

  • Flávia

I’m hoping for Lost and Modern Family. But Community and friday Night Lights should be there too.

  • tamara

On comedy, Modern Family should win.
On drama it’s more tricky. I love all of the shows. But it has to be either Mad Men, Dexter or Breaking Bad. Those 3 deserve it the most.

  • Liz

I hope True Blood will win!! It was such a shame that none of the actors were nominated!! I mean, come on! Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Ryan Kwanteen, Rutina… heck, the brilliant Nelsan Ellis!!

  • LA

    Mad Men, all the way.

    • Bradley

      Yep, Mad Men!

  • Alex

I am hoping against hope for a Dexter win, but that season ended so long ago! But darn it has got to go to Breaking Bad. I STILL get goosebumps just thinking about it! And if Modern Family doesn’t take Best Comedy then we have a serious problem.
