Press Tour 411: Highlights from the 'Glee panel

Categories: Glee, Press Tour 2010, Scoop

In attendance: Exec producers Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto, choreographer Zach Woodlee, music producer Adam Anders, and costume designer Lou Eyrich.

* Glee is going smaller in season two. “I felt instead of going bigger and over-stuffing it in season two, let’s go under it,” said co-creator Ryan Murphy. “We’re scaling it back and concentrating on the stories.” Supporting characters like Brittany, Santana, Tina, and Mike Chang will get more play and each episode will only contain four or five musical numbers. That said, Murphy isn’t doing away with the big-budget tribute episodes. Among the splashy installments planned: A Britney Spears-themed hour, a post Super Bowl episode (Murphy is in talks with a number of artists), an episode featuring all-original music, and a Christmas ep that will hopefully guest star Susan Boyle. Press Tour Roundup: Seven things I learned during Fox's big day

In related news, I’m a big fat cow and it’s all Fox’s fault.

* Honesty isn’t dead in Hollywood. “I have no idea if this is a good idea for a network show,” said creator Kyle Killen of his ambitious (and terrific) soap Lone Star. “If it’s a failure, it’s going to be a spectacular failure.” Killen sold the show as Dallas without the cheese. “We hope to go a couple of seasons before we have hair-pulling cat fights.” READ FULL STORY »

'Dexter' spoiler alert: Find out how Rita's returning!

comic-con-no--ordinary-peopleJulie Benz dropped by EW’s Comic-Con suite last week to talk up her role in ABC’s new super-powered drama No Ordinary Family, but you better believe I snuck in a question about her top-secret return to Dexter this fall. And to say she gave some killer (read: extra spoilery) answers is quite the understatement. Benz—who was accompanied by Family leading man Michael Chiklis and boss Greg Berlanti—also opened up about the Rita-related scare that led to the removal of a sizeable Family prop. READ FULL STORY »

Fox Chairman on 'American Idol': 'Much that has been written is accurate'

As expected, Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice told the nation’s TV reporters today that he had nothing new to report on the ongoing negotiations with potential American Idol judges, other than to say that “no one has signed a deal on either side of the camera who wasn’t on the show last year.” He did hint that “much of the information that has been written is accurate,” but he also added that some reports written have “been widely inaccurate.”

So far, Fox has not confirmed reports that former Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe would return or that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler would replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres when the show returns in the spring.

“The goal has to be to put on a great TV show,” Rice told reporters who gathered at Fox’s annual TV Critics Tour in Beverly Hills, Calif. “There is a journey finding these kids, and there is sort of alchemy (to achieve) on the judges’ panel. Does that mean we should replace them identically and cast the same person? I don’t think so but we have the obligation to put on the best TV show. Simon’s departure meant there was going to be a natural evolution.

“When we are working with the No. 1 TV show, the scrutiny is enormous,” Rice continued. “I truly wish we were going to (debut) a panel of judges and that could be a celebration for us, and we could engage with you on that, I’m sorry that is not going to happen.”

Rice did acknowledge that he began talking to DeGeneres in June about her wanting to leave, and that he tried to persuade her to stay.

'Terra Nova' debut postponed until fall 2011

Categories: Sci-Fi, Television

jason-omaraImage Credit: Bobby Bank/WireImage.comFox announced today that we’ll have to wait a lot longer to see the next series from Brannon Braga (24, FlashForward) and David Fury (Lost, Angel): Terra Nova will preview for one night next May, but then bow officially in the fall of 2011.

Fox decided to give the time-traveling drama the same treatment it gave Glee, which was previewed last year after a May episode of American Idol and subsequently rolled out officially in the fall of 2009. The experiment worked: Buzz for the musical dramedy built over the summer and the show had an auspicious beginning.

“It was mainly due to the scope [Terra Nova] was going to take,” Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly told reporters Monday in Beverly Hills. “ We went into it knowing it was going to be ambitious. It really became apparent that we had to do this show right. We’ll have an enormous jump on the pilot, and on the marketing side, we’ll let people understand the show.”

Production on the Jason O’Mara starrer isn’t expected to start until October, and the producers are still deciding where to shoot the high-concept series, which takes place 100 years in the future and focuses on a family that travels back to the prehistoric era. There was some talk about shooting the drama in Australia, but the studio is also considering locales in Florida. The drama will have a heavy computer imagery component because it will feature prehistoric creatures.

Casting is still underway for Terra Nova. O’Mara (Life on Mars) will play Jim Shannon, whose family is part of a group of settlers who travel back in time. Meanwhile, the show’s auspices read like a who’s who in Hollywood: Besides Braga, Fury, and Steven Spielberg, other executive producers include ex-Fox Chairman Peter Chernin, agent-turned-producer Aaron Kaplan, Craig Silverstein (Bones), and Kelly Marcel.

Press Tour 411: Highlights from ABC's exec session

Categories:

* ABC’s top PR guy Kevin Brockman trotted out a huge stuffed pink elephant and quickly acknowledged the other “elephant in room”—last week’s abrupt resignation of ABC president Stephen McPherson. He then warned the assembled press that newly-installed prez, ex ABC Family boss Paul Lee, would not be commenting on his predecessor’s controversial departure. “Tuesday’s statement still holds,” he said. “We have nothing new to add.”

* “I’m super unprepared,” Lee admitted at the start. “I’ve been in the job 36 hours. I apologize if I don’t have the answers to your questions. I do know one thing: Modern Family should win the Emmy for best comedy this year.” (Lee went on to name-check Family at least seven more times; I think he’s a fan!) READ FULL STORY »
