'So You Think You Can Dance' wins night, 'Big Brother' remains strong

Categories: TV Ratings

The season seven finale of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance was the top performer on Thursday, winning the night among adults and teens. The competition show earned a 2.4 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 and averaged 7.2 million viewers, up 33%  in the demographic and up 29 percent in viewers versus last Thursday. The Dance finale was down 8%, however, in the demo versus last season’s finale on Dec. 16, 2009.

Still, Fox reports that this summer’ cycle of Dance outperformed its fall ’09 average by 8% in total viewers.

Meanwhile, last night’s live eviction show of Big Brother won its time period in viewers and key demographics and out-delivered both last week and last year’s comparable broadcast. BB won its timeslot in viewers (7.93 million) and adults 18-49 (2.6/9) and added an additional 790,000 viewers versus last week.

Compared to the same night last year, Big Brother was up 4% in adults 18-49, 17% in adults 18-34 and added 1 million viewers (from 6.93 million).

Overall, Fox won the night in the key adult demographic but CBS attracted the most viewers with 7.8 million.

Does Conan O'Brien deserve a payback Emmy?

Categories: Emmy Awards, Emmys

conan-ad-tbsImage Credit: TBSOne of the more ironic nominations to come out this year’s Emmy race was the nod to Conan O’Brien and his eight-month stint on The Tonight Show, an abbreviated tenure that made more headlines for how it ended than for its content. O’Brien’s Tonight Show made the cut for the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series category this year, an already highly-competitive match-up because of perennial favorites like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (last year’s winner) The Colbert Report and Saturday Night Live (Real Time with Bill Maher also earned a nod). O’Brien and his Tonight Show writing team also earned a nomination in the scribe category.

A clever print campaign (pictured) may have helped O’Brien earn the surprise nomination, though it wasn’t executed by NBC: TBS stepped up and bought ads in publications like Entertainment Weekly and Los Angeles Times in hopes that a win would help promote O’Brien’s new talk (debuting in November). Or maybe it was a few stand-out episodes from the time he hosted The Tonight Show that propelled TV Academy members to suggest his name for the ballot (though, I for one, think his funniest monologues and skits came during those final days before he left the show). But it seems more likely that O’Brien earned the nod because of the way he was treated by NBC in those final days. Even today, a rumor continues to swirl that O’Brien learned that the Peacock wanted to relegate him to 12:30 p.m. by reading it first on Deadline.com.

Would it be fair to reward O’Brien with an Emmy based on payback rather than his performance? The public has certainly been on his side (witness the I’m With Coco campaign that surfaced on the internet earlier this year). That’s why it seems unlikely that anyone at the Aug. 29 ceremony would begrudge O’Brien if he wins the statuette. We already know his comedy is worth its weight in gold; his team, after all, won the Emmy in 2007 for writing Late Night with Conan O’Brien. And voters will probably want to give O’Brien the final word on the whole sordid affair — and on NBC, no less, which is broadcasting the ceremony this year.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Grey's,' 'Chuck,' 'Glee,' '90210,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' and more!

Question: I think you’re awesome. You know what would make you even more awesome? Some Glee scoop. ASAP, or I’ll die. It will be on your conscience. — Pablo
Ausiello:
Curiously, I think I’m awesome too. But I’m also cripplingly insecure—hey, don’t laugh; I am!—so I appreciate the positive reinforcement. Now for that awesomeness-increasing scoop: The show’s season 2 stud-muffin, Chord Overstreet, tells us that McKinley High may be about to go the way of All About Eve. “I join the glee club and also the football team,” he reveals. “I start off as Finn’s friend, [but] by the end, I slowly become more of his competition [and] give him a run for his money. He doesn’t like that I do both of the things he does, and I do them pretty well, if I do say so myself.” What about Rachel? Will he be a rival for her attention as well? “There are lots of single characters on the show, so who knows?” he nonanswers. My guess? He’ll turn out to be the love interest for Kurt that we’ve all heard about. Who agrees with me? Hit the comments!

Question: Is Jan ever going to come back to The Office? —Jordan
Ausiello:
Yes! Melora Hardin will reprise her role as Michael’s former boss/lover in this season’s fourth episode, written and directed by showrunner/costar Paul Lieberstein. “Michael comes in with what he thinks is a pimple, but is revealed to be a cold sore,” explains Lieberstein. “He learns that a cold sore is a form of herpes, and so he gets the idea that he has to contact all the women he’s ever been with to tell them.” READ FULL STORY »
