Fall 2010 ratings: 'Law & Order: LA' has strong debut

law-and-order-la-ulrichImage Credit: Dean Hendler/NBCThe latest installment from the Law & Order franchise brought some much-needed good news to the Peacock network on Wednesday. Law & Order: Los Angeles won its 10 p.m. timeslot among adults 18-49 (3.1 rating/9 share) and in viewers (10.5 million) and boosted NBC’s performance in the timeslot by 63% versus last year. L&O: LA is now the second most successful new show among adults 18-49 this season, behind CBS’ Hawaii Five-0. Each 18-49 rating point represents 1.31 million viewers.

CBS still won the night in viewers (12.3 million) and adults 18-49 (3.2/9), thanks to another strong performance by Survivor (12.1 million). It will be interesting to see if the show maintains such a healthy audience after the older tribe made the (bad) decision to oust ex-NFL coach Jimmy Johnson. At 9 p.m, Criminal Minds dominated in viewers with (14.3 million) but the new drama The Defenders had to settle for second place in eyeballs (10.3 million) and adults 18-49 because of L&O: LA.

Fox, which aired a two-hour installment of Hell’s Kitchen, came in second for the night among adults 18-49 and fourth in viewers (6.3 million). NBC came in third in the demo and second in viewers (8.9 million) while ABC finished fourth among adults 18-49 and third in viewers (7.28 million). Modern Family had another great night and won its timeslot in just about every demographic but it dipped 12% versus last year among adults. Meanwhile, ABC’s new drama The Whole Truth continues to struggle at 10: It was down 13% versus last week’s premiere among 18-49 and only averaged 4.71 million.

Anderson Cooper to host daytime talk show in Fall 2011

anderson-cooperImage Credit: Art Streiber/CNNAnderson Cooper is expanding his fiefdom. Warner Bros. Domestic TV announced today that the CNN anchor will host a new, one-hour daily daytime strip that’s set for national syndication in Fall 2011. At the same time, CNN put out its out statement saying that Cooper will remain with Anderson Cooper 360 for “years to come”  and that his new talk show will only boost his presence on cable.

“Over the course of the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of daytime programs,” Cooper said in a statement. “It’s fun and interesting to work in daytime television. The format is unique and you can really go in-depth on a wide range of fascinating and compelling stories. With this new program I hope to relay important information and relate to people and the audience in a completely different way.  It’s an exciting opportunity to show another side of myself and create something worthwhile and special in daytime.”

“There is a great opportunity in the marketplace for this type of show,” added Ken Werner, President, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, in a statement. “Fall ’11 begins a transition period when long established franchises are leaving the air and making way for a new generation of shows.  Anderson Cooper is one of the most distinctive voices of the next generation of television.  His popularity and skills uniquely position him to be the next big syndication franchise.”

Cooper’s show will cover social issues, trends and events, pop culture and celebrity, the studio says. He’ll also bring his news sense to daytime by launching undercover investigations and hidden camera experiments.  The show will feature a studio audience and tape in New York.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Glee,' 'Grey's,' 'Weeds,' '30 Rock,' 'Bones,' 'Smallville,' and more!

ausiello-glee-greysImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABC; Carin Baer/Fox; Brian Cyr/The CW; Ali Goldstein/NBCGot a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com

Question: Let’s assume Chord Overstreet’s Sam is not a love interest for Glee’s Kurt, and Darren Criss is. Well, who will Sam be paired with? —Jeff
Ausiello:
I’m hearing single mom Quinn. But if you’ve got a better idea, the comments section below has your name written all over it, Jeff.

Question: Is Mike Chang going to get a solo on Glee? I’m swooning over his dancing (and now his abs!), but a solo would just be the icing on the cake. —Kraig
Ausiello:
He’ll get the next best thing to a solo in episode 4: a duet with Tina!

Question: With the Britney tribute episode and talk of possible Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen episodes, when the hell are the folks at Glee going to do a second Madonna episode? I want my Madge! —Dan
Ausiello:
Not this season, apparently. Word on the street is that the Super Bowl episode will be the last tribute we’ll see this season. Of course, given the record ratings the show got with last night’s Britneypalooza, the word on the street could change, and fast. READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive: Tim Roth 'sad' that 'Lie to Me' is replacing 'Lone Star'

lie-to-meImage Credit: Isabella Vosmikova/FoxI know. Fox killed and buried Lone Star so quickly that it’s almost hard to be happy that its demise has led to the third-season premiere of Lie to Me being bumped up from Nov. 10 to…um, Monday (when it assumes the DOA drama’s time slot). But try to be happy anyway, okay? Series lead Tim Roth and I have even come up with five excellent reasons why you should forgive his show for jumping into Lone Star‘s grave. READ FULL STORY »

'Dancing With the Stars' producers on Bruno Tonioli's comments about Michael Bolton: Let the man speak!

Tags: News, Television

bolton-and-hightowerImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABC; Bob D'Amico/ABCThe producers of Dancing With the Stars today attempted to put the kibosh on any lingering resentment over Bruno Tonioli and his critique of contestant Michael Bolton (whom the judge accused on Monday of performing “probably the worst jive” in the show’s history). They released the following statement: “Bruno’s role as a judge is to give his honest opinions on the quality of the dances he’s judging, which is what he did in this case. While we respect the feelings of our celebrities and our dancers, we don’t feel Bruno should be expected to apologize for doing his job.”

During Tuesday’s elimination episode, Bolton expressed his disappointment backstage with co-host Brooke Burke by saying, “I think Bruno was inappropriate and disrespectful.” Even host Tom Bergeron told EW on Tuesday that Tonioli’s comments were ”over-the-top” and that “it’s one thing to criticize someone’s dance, but Bruno deserved to be chastised by Len.” Bergeron said he was going to give Tonioli a chance to amend his comments last night, but it never happened.

Ultimately, Tonioli’s assessment echoed what the viewers were feeling: The singer was voted off the show on Tuesday.

'Glee' posts record ratings among adults, 'No Ordinary Family' holds up on ABC

insider-ratingsImage Credit: Cliff Lipson/CBS; Eric McCandless/ABC; David M. Russell/CBS It was another Glee-ful night for Fox on Tuesday: The sophomore drama not only averaged 13.2 million viewers, it posted its best-ever rating among adults 18-49 (5.8 rating/16 share). Fox says this is the first time in 17 years that the highest-rated entertainment program of premiere week actually grew in week two among adults 18-49 and total viewers (since the Fall of 1993 with Seinfeld). Each rating point represents 1.31 million viewers.

The Glee lead-in did a solid for Fox’s new comedy Raising Hope. The Martha Plimpton starrer was up 3% among adults 18-49 (3.2/9) and total viewers (7.4 million) from last week’s premiere. But the mushroom effect from Glee stopped at 9:30 p.m. The new comedy Running Wilde starring Will Arnett and Keri Russell only averaged a 2.1/5 in 18-49 – a 13% drop from last week. It averaged 4.7 million viewers. Overall, though, Fox still won the night among adults 18-49 and came in third among viewers (9.68 million).

CBS won the night in viewers (16.02 million) because of big audiences for NCIS (18.7 million), NCIS: LA (16.4 million), and the return of The Good Wife (12.8 million). In fact, the latter drama starring Julianna Margulies won its timeslot among adults 18-49 and key female demos.

ABC featured the debut of No Ordinary Family, which held up pretty well considering the competition from Fox and CBS. The Michael Chiklis series about a super-power clan averaged 10.54 million viewers and built in its second half-hour among some male demographics. The results show of Dancing with the Stars (your jive wasn’t that horrible but goodbye anyway, Michael Bolton!) averaged 17.05 million. ABC came in second for the night among viewers (12.2 million) and third among 18-49.

NBC was fourth on Tuesday among adults and viewers (6.37 million). A two-hour edition of The Biggest Loser averaged 7.1 million, and Parenthood brought in 4.85 million.

'Caprica' First Look: The Cylons are coming!

'Deadliest Catch' captains have reportedly left the popular Discovery series

deadliest-catchImage Credit: DiscoveryIn a shocking development involving Discovery’s popular reality show about crab fisherman, Deadliest Catch stars Sig Hansen and Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand have reportedly left the show.  The trio sent this statement to the Hollywood Reporter Tuesday: “We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in Deadliest Catch. It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive Catch fans we have met over the years.”

A Discovery spokesman said a statement from the cable network is forthcoming.

Earlier this month, the Hillstrands were sued by Discovery over their involvement in a Catch spinoff. Discovery reportedly claims that the brothers failed to finish work on Hillstranded and is now seeking $3 million in damages. An attorney for the Hillstrands shot back by saying the lawsuit may force the men to sell their boats and fire their crews. Hansen decided to show solidarity for his fellow captains and backed the Hillstrands.

It’s unclear what the departures mean for the seventh season of the show, which is set to resume production next month. The first episode is supposed to include a scene in which the sons of the late Capt. Phil Harris scatter his ashes off of Dutch Harbor near Alaska. Harris’ tragic death helped Catch lure its biggest audience ever during the show’s sixth season.

The Hillstrand brothers co-captain Time Bandit on Deadliest Catch, while Hansen lords over Northwestern. Developing…

'The Bold and the Beautiful' casts Brenchel from 'Big Brother 12'

The latest Big Brother showmance will follow in the footsteps of Jeff Schroeder and Jordan Lloyd by making its debut in CBS daytime next month: Rachel Reilly and Brendon Villegas, a.k.a. Brenchel, will appear in two episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful on Oct. 25 and 26. Reilly will play a waitress and Villegas, a bartender in a scene with Hope (Kim Matula), Liam (Scott Clifton), Bill (Don Diamont), Katie (Heather Tom), and Amber (Adrienne Frantz).

Reached by EW, Reilly acknowledged that the role wasn’t much of a stretch — she worked as a VIP waitress in Las Vegas, after all, before joining Big Brother this summer. But the gig represented the opportunity of a lifetime because she’s been a longtime fan of the show. But enough about the soap cameo: Has she followed through with her plans and actually moved to Los Angeles to be with her man? “I’m in the process! I’m going to make it happen!” she told EW.  She’ll miss Sin City, though — especially the folks who were nothing like BB 12′s Ragan and actually liked being around her. “Oh my gosh, everyone has been so supportive. I was shocked. Everyone hated me in the house and I was convinced everyone in America hated me. But coming back to Vegas, everyone was so welcoming and supportive.”

Even though her fellow houseguests expressed skepticism during the BB finale that she and Villegas wouldn’t last, Reilly said she’s seen the opposite reaction in the real world. “Everyone wants to know when there will be a proposal and a wedding,” she gushes. “We are head over heels in love. I’m so lucky to be with him. I foresee a long future together. He is my missing puzzle piece!”
