EW Exclusive: Amy Poehler to host 'SNL' premiere

amy-poehlerImage Credit: Tommaso Boddi/PR PhotosEW.com has learned that Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) will host Saturday Night Live when the late-night comedy show returns to NBC on Sept. 25. (Katy Perry will be the musical guest.) Poehler, who was a member of the SNL troupe from 2001-2008, earned her fourth Emmy nomination this summer for playing Leslie Knope on Parks. The single-camera comedy from Greg Daniels and Michael Schur will begin its third year on NBC later this season (see the Peacock’s fall premiere schedule here).

SNL, which is about to begin its 36th year on NBC, will also add four featured players to the mix this season to help fill the void left by Will Forte. EW has confirmed they are actor/comedian Taran Killam, who’s appeared on Mad TV and How I Met Your Mother, Chicago-based comedians Paul Brittain and Vanessa Bayer, and newcomer Jay Pharoah, who has performed on BET’s “One Mic Stand.”

Awesome! Amy is the best! So happy she’s hosting the premiere, and I can’t wait for season 3 of Parks and Rec!

    • you are a hypocrite

So where are all the jerks that were un-hinged last week bout SNL not adding any african americans? Please keep Jenny Slate..she’s fine (like her as the back-up singer in the skit “What’s Up with That ?” ..and has some innovative comedy ideas…she is worth a second season – the writers can find tons of stuff for her if they tried ..um hello parody of the Jersey Shore please ?!

      • Mr. Holloway

If you check the second page of the comments, you’ll see at least one of the “unhinged jerks” responded.

    • KLH

I hope Amy’s one legged hussy joins katie on stage and steals a number from her

  • Lauren

This will have to do for now since Parks & Rec won’t be back until January.
(Does anyone else think Outsourced looks awful?)

    • Karate Pants

      Yes.

    • Mr. Holloway

Agree on both counts…it’s ridiculous for NBC to move, arguably, their best comedy until next year…especially in favor of the awful-looking “Outsourced.”

      • Carrie

A lot of the Parks and Recreation fans (myself included) are hoping they bring it back early due to Outsourced’s cancellation. It’s gong to last two, maybe three episodes.

      • cg

huh, moving the best comedy? 30 rock? Community? Oh they aren’t moving. Phew.

  • Stephanie T.

At least they will have SOMEBODY who’s funny.

  • Rob

Outsourced looks HORRIBLE. Nice show title for a recession-

    • Joe

Exactly! That show will tank and be cancelled by immediately.

  • t.t

    yay can’t wait! :D

  • Stephanie T.

I thought it was cute at first but now it looks silly. I’d like to see a sitcom about a public library. You’d be surprised what REALLY goes on in an urban one.

    • Liz

I was shocked when I started working in an urban library. My first day there, I walked in and the 10 rules on the wall included #9 No shaving. I’m sorry, I didn’t realize people went to the library to shave.

      • Stephanie T.

LOL! Yes. Where I work, customers steal soap (the liquid soap. They literaly break open the dispenser and steal it) and toilet paper! There is just so much material that can be written.

    • Mr. Holloway

My gf works in a library: she got a good chuckle out of the “Parks and Rec” episode that depicted people in the library system as a bunch of miserable ba$tards.

      • Stephanie T.

It is mainly because some customers REFUSE to speak English.

      • Mr. Holloway

I hear ya…my gf is Hispanic, but doesn’t speak great English, yet always gets the nod whenever a Spanish-speaking person comes in…much to her chagrin.

  • Wise Man

Outsourced looks awful, it seems crass, dumb, and a little offensive and no where near the quality of Parks & Rec

    • Cris

Not defending it (because I agree that Outsourced looks awful), but Parks and Rec was nowhere near the quality of Parks and Rec in its first season.

      • Karate Pants

Totally disagree, the last season of Parks and Rec was STELLAR. But at least we’re all on the same page about Outsourced.

      • Mr. Holloway

Did I miss the memo? Is Sept. 7 opposite day?!

      • Wottadoosh

        “No”

  • S.O.

Hope SNL has a decent musical guest. Please NOT Katy Perry.

    • Brian

That’s what I’m betting on and also what I’m dreading: Katy Perry for the premiere. Sadly, I’m betting on it.

  • hannah

    who’s the musical guest?

  • K

It is weird that she’s hosting when her show isn’t even on yet. Big mistake on NBC’s part.
Yes, Outsourced looks awful. I will not be wasting my time. Who really wants to see where our jobs went?

  • Cris

I always feel like it’s a cop-out when an SNL alum (or Alec Baldwin or Steve Martin) hosts the show. sure, they’re usually funnier than average, but come on, for the season premiere you couldn’t get someone promoting a big upcoming movie or TV show, or a recent Emmy winner?

    • Ripley

I agree, it’s like there isn’t even a host then. Surely someone else can take a week out of their schedule to host.

    • Brian

You mean Jane Lynch or Bryan Cranston?

      • Maureen

YES to Jane Lynch! It’s blasphemy she hasn’t hosted yet…

    • @Chris

Alec Baldwin is a great host. Canteen boy, soap opera doctor. I would love to see him every week. Why would I want to see Nurse Jackie. I can watch her show. I know Alec will be funny in spite of the writing.

  • TGH

Glad Amy’s hosting, but I do wish P&R was starting in September. It’s the funniest thing on television – seriously!

  • Jane

Yay! This is amazing news. And Jane Lynch is hosting this year too? Double awesome.

A side note: Where does How I Met Your Mother film? Taran Killam is Cobie Smulders’ husband (Robin on HIMYM) and I am wondering if they are now going to have to do an LA-NY long distance thing? If so, that’s kind of sad since they just had a baby :(

    • Joe

Jane, barf. Who cares? They both have enough money to fly back and forth. I’d die to have their “problems”.

    • Dani

Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam are the dumbest names ever. Glad they found each other.

      • @Dani

Don’t know if they ar the dumbest ever but Cobie is pretty bad. Give your kid a name that helps identify gender.

    • Whatever

Jane, I don’t want to be mean but WHO CARES ? Your comment really looks like it’s a matter of life and death when no-one here gives a crap about their personal lives, really.

      • Jan

You obviously DO want to be mean.

  • Mac

Glad that Amy is hosting, but wouldnt it make more sense if she was hosting around the time P&R was premiering?

  • LOL

When is Conan hosting? I’m with Coco!

    • Lily

Oh my, that would blow my socks off.
